Anything that involves zombies immediately has my attention. For as long as I can remember, reanimated corpses have been one of my favourite horror tropes, especially when it comes to videogames – I think a little game known as Resident Evil might be responsible for this.TOP/BEST ADULT VIDEO GAMES IN UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (USA)

But I doubt you know it. Anyway, as soon as I heard the name Deadcraft, intrigue overcame me, the name certainly indicates brain-munchers, I was correct in my assumption, and the craft part of the game’s name is also a strong indicator of what you need to do. In Deadcraft, you’re in a world ravaged by the walking dead, and, of course, every day is a fight for survival, but why is the world like this? Meteors. That’s it. The very thing that wiped the dinosaurs from existence millions of years ago came back with a vengeance, and decided to take out humanity in a slightly different way. You see, it’s not the impact of the asteroids that drove humanity to the edge of extinction, but the mysterious virus found within them. This bizarre virus reanimates the dead, which turns them into human-hungry zombies, and that’s what leads to the disaster humanity now faces, as the virus causes so many to rise that many humans couldn’t fight back. Then, as with any apocalyptic situation, people just can’t get along – instead of banding together to be one strong unit, they split into factions. It truly is survival of the fittest. If you’re weak, I’m afraid you’re not long for this world.

DEADCRAFT – It Came From the Junkyard.

In Deadcraft, you play as Reid, a half-zombie man that’s clearly been through some things – perhaps a trip to Aberzombie and Fitch would cheer him up a bit. In fact, you begin the game just after he escapes from being held captive by a group of humans. Of course, he doesn’t want to let this go, and why should he? The world is in anarchy, and if me and Reid can dish out some sweet, cold revenge, we’re sure as hell gonna. As with any survival game worth its salt.Fraymakers

Here are some potential game features for DEADCRAFT:

      1. Procedurally generated world: Each playthrough offers a unique and unpredictable world with different terrains, resources, and dangers.
      2. Survival mechanics: Players must manage their hunger, thirst, and fatigue, while also avoiding environmental hazards such as radiation and toxic substances.
      3. Crafting system: Players can craft weapons, tools, and structures using materials found throughout the world. Crafting requires specific recipes, which can be learned by finding recipe books or experimenting with different combinations of materials.
Base building: Players can build and fortify their own shelters to protect themselves from zombies and other players. Bases can be customized with traps, defenses, and resources such as farms and water collectors.

Deadcraft isn’t just about crafting items and collecting materials. Rather, you need to consider other elements such as first aid and hunger. Yes. It’s survival 101, but many seem to forget that food and drink are a necessity, and in Deadcraft, this sentiment rings true, as you must keep an eye on both your hydration and hunger levels. In order to quench your thirst or hunger, you can find sustenance in a variety of ways. However, not all of them are good for your well being. For example, as soon as you start the game, you’re told to eat a rat, and I can’t say I felt too bad about it. Reid, on the other hand, is sick due to it being spoiled meat – the fact I didn’t cook it probably doesn’t help either. Still, things like this have an impact on your health, so only consider this sort of alternative if you’ve got no other option. Personally, this is one of my favourite things about survival games, especially one of this nature, as every little thing you do matters. You can eat gone off meat, have it negatively impact you, but not think anything of it, only for it to come back to bite you in the butt when you’re fighting a horde of zombies, especially since certain actions drain more energy, which by proxy, determines how much your food and drink bars deplete by.

Survival mechanics.

Furthermore, to replenish your energy bar and your health, you must rest, but the amount of HP you regain is determined by the level of your various wellbeing bars, so bear this in mind before you take that well-deserved nap. Beating up zombies truly is tiring work. Speaking of which, to survive in this harsh world, you need items, gear, and, of course, weapons to bash in some zombie skulls, and trust me when I say, it’s satisfying to deanimate a reanimated corpse. The gameplay feels smooth, and each strike of my weapon was perfect. At no point did I feel like I was at a disadvantage due to shoddy controls or messed up camera angles. On top of that, the combat itself is actually fun, and not just because I’m biased toward zombies, but because each encounter has that sense of ‘this could be my last’ if I get too gutsy or cocky. Deadcraft manages to walk that fine line that combines fun and consideration perfectly. The fact that Reid can use unique abilities due to being a half-zombie is just the cherry on top of a rather grotesque sundae. DEADCRAFT has you play as a half-zombie half-human named Reid who’s trying to survive. One of the first things that’ll strike you as unique about its world is that you can kill both zombies and humans although the latter will raise your wanted status.Hi-Fi RUSH

You also have a gauge that shifts from zombie to human and the gameplay changes accordingly. For example, you can unleash a devastating attack as a zombie yet humans will become your enemy. It’s an interesting premise for sure so we’re off to a good start. All of this is presented in a fittingly drab world that has splashes of colour which usually represents zombie-themed objects. The graphics aren’t anything special but they’re not bad either; kind of like an early PS4 game. Meanwhile, the audio is filled with anime-style voice acting, drone-like music that fits the current situation, and the very wet sounds of hacking and slashing. Overall, it’s whatever. The general atmosphere within DEADCRAFT is over-the-top as it features a cast of unlikeably crass characters and plenty of irreverence. At first, I quite enjoyed the nihilism and how there’s nothing substantial to latch onto as it blends well with the post-apocalyptic survival gameplay. However, the constant swearing and flippancy eventually became obnoxious and I couldn’t help but think, “Okay, I get it.” On the plus side, there are plenty of wacky characters to meet along the journey that are bursting with personality. All of these characters inhabit an exceptionally small world that you’ll traverse over and over again on your quest to acquire materials and complete missions.

Story missions.

In fact, I’d say that this is the most disappointing aspect of DEADCRAFT as you really have to do a lot in order to progress to the next area and once you do, you’ll be disappointed by how it’s also small and uninteresting. Considering you have to make progress at a snail’s pace, the campaign eventually turns from an interesting premise to a tedious slog. The best part of DEADCRAFT is in its name; the crafting. That being said, it’s still not great as all you do is place facilities around your base then select menu options after acquiring the necessary materials. Even the side-quests are boring so amassing what you need can be tiring work. The good news is that you can collect dead bodies, plant them in your garden, and use the resulting… thing? in crafting recipes to create some undeniably interesting results such as zombie turrets that can help you in battle. Players can build and fortify their own shelters to protect themselves from zombies and other players. Bases can be customized with traps, defenses, and resources such as farms and water collectors.

Players can team up with others to survive and complete missions. They can trade resources, share equipment, and work together to take down large hordes of zombies.  The weather system is unpredictable and can impact player abilities, such as making it harder to see or move in strong winds or snow.  Zombies are more active at night, making it harder for players to scavenge for resources and navigate the world.  Players can improve their character’s abilities by earning experience points and unlocking new skills and perks, such as increased stamina or better crafting abilities. Alongside the survival gameplay, there are story missions that reveal more about the world and its history, and offer rewards for completion. Players may encounter random events while exploring the world, such as a survivor in need of help or a sudden zombie attack. These events can offer opportunities for rewards or pose new challenges. Ever wanted a necromancer survival game? A fun little mix between hack n slash, survival and crafting game with a very satisfying gameplay loop. Go out, quest, gather materials and go home to rest and craft. You earn XP for doing most any action, it’s all very natural with good progression pacing.

I never felt like I was too far ahead or behind of where I wanted to be, and I never kept an excess of skill points for very long. The story’s a basic revenge tale, but your main fun comes from Zombiecrafting, which is (as one might suspect) crafting all sorts of fun stuff with zombies. Want a baseball bat made out of a zombie torse wearing a Chef’s hat, that eats people as an execution move? We got you covered. Want to juice a zombie like an orange for some precious water? Do it. Hot-wire a zombie into a turret and deploy it at will? You bet. You get minions, and while they’re nothing to write home about, they’re still fun to have around and use. A nice thing is that your minion limits aren’t universal, which is to say that you can deploy both melee meat shields and ranged attackers on different limit counters, for about 4-8 on screen (so far in my playthrough). The game’s a fun little experience with a dash of anime influence, a bit of gallows humor and generally solid gameplay. Worth the $25, and even more so on sale. Word to the wise though: upgrade your energy and needs skills first and you’ll have a way better time. I’ll put it this way. Do you want to play a hack n slash RPG with farming elements, both literal and gameplay wise? This might just be up your alley then. The Crew 2
