To be clear, you can “morph” into Chalice as one of the two main characters (Cuphead or Mugman) by equipping a special charm. While it does take up the charm slot, Chalice comes with her own set of skills, including a parry dash (literally it’s a parry doubling as a dash, more on that in a second), a double jump (like, a passive double jump, no big deal), and a dodge roll (that has invincibility, or iFrames). As you can imagine, it’s kind of a huge deal and changes the way you approach every single boss in the game — old content included. Chalice actually ended up being one of the most significant things about The Delicious Last Course for me when all was said and done. While the developers stopped short of calling her an “easy mode” when I talked to them pre-launch, she’s definitely going to feel that way to some people. Making her a charm that can be swapped out at any time if it gets to be too much is a smart move, but Chalice is a ton of fun in any context and I’m glad she’s in the game as-is. Full stop, I enjoyed the run & gun platforming stages (which the DLC has none of, to be clear) immensely more using her. The new shop items, like the Heart Ring charm, where you gain health after specific successful parry intervals, continue to inject more viable strategies into Cuphead as a whole. A few of them seem insignificant, but when combined with certain strategies and playstyles, they allow more options to blossom — which is really the core of Cuphead, figuring out puzzles in unique ways. Nearly five years after its initial release, Cuphead’s long awaited DLC is finally here. Aptly titled The Delicious Last Course, this new content serves an extra helping of frantic boss fights and the charming style the series is known for. While it may be brief, it’s an excellent send-off for our beverage-bearing pals. Similar to the base game, Cuphead’s DLC takes place on an island that’s home to various bosses. To reach the new area, players simply need to complete the first mausoleum, making it easily accessible, and if you have business elsewhere, you can leave anytime. Instead of Cuphead and Mugman trying to save their souls from the Devil, this time around the brothers are summoned to help bring Ms. Chalice back to life, as her ghost speaks to them from the astral plane. To do this, the trio must collect various ingredients guarded by bosses in order to make the Wondertart, a mysterious treat that’s said to have resurrecting properties. Once again, the presentation here is fantastic. The 1930s animation style is a joy to behold, bringing its extraordinary character designs to life with an eye for detail and a playful sense of surprise.

Cuphead – The Delicious Last Course! Brothers Cuphead and Mugman are joined by the clever, adventurous Ms. Chalice for a rollicking adventure on a previously undiscovered Inkwell Isle!

Its jazzy new tunes fit right in with the world, expertly complementing those fun, classy vibes. Right off the bat, one of the biggest gameplay additions is that Ms. Chalice is now playable, munching a special cookie to temporarily return to the land of the living. Unlike Cuphead and Mugman though, Ms. Chalice has a few gameplay differences including a double jump, a dodge roll with I-frames, and an extra hit point. Plus, her parry is tied to her dash, giving you some more flexibility in combat. She even has a few adjustments in the flying levels like a spread shot. To play as her though, you need to equip the cookie in your charm slot, leaving her without access to other charms. She can also be used throughout the main game, outside of the DLC, adding some replay value if you’re a veteran, or an extra helping hand if you’re hitting some roadblocks. Overall, she’s a great addition and fits right in. From a gameplay standpoint, The Delicious Last Course sticks to the formula of the base game with frantic boss encounters being the highlight. There’s a decent number of them, and they’re all engaging and very creative. For instance one of the early ones is a brawl with various bugs in an underground village, eventually attracting the attention of a giant anteater who joins the fight. This time around there are no run-and-gun stages. Replacing them instead is The King’s Leap where you battle several chess-themed bosses like multiple pawns and a knight.

These encounters play out differently since you’re unable to shoot or use specials, forcing you to parry instead to defeat your foes. These missions also lack multiple phases, resulting in each feeling like a brief challenge, rather than a full-on boss. Despite the smaller scale, they’re still creative and fun to take on. Additionally, once defeated you can return to run them again in a gauntlet where you’re required to defeat all of them in a row, adding an extra layer of challenge. While the run-and-gun stages weren’t as strong as boss fights in the base game, their absence is still felt. Having at least one would have been nice to shake things up, and to see what creative concepts Studio MDHR would have come up with. With new challenges also come new power-ups for our heroes like Crackshot, which shoots out a straight shot, but can also break off and track an enemy for less damage, and Twist Up which shoots in an upward arc. There are also a few new charms including the Heart Ring which grants you 1 HP for the first, third, and sixth parries, as well as the Broken Relic which is tied to a mysterious side-quest. All in all, they’re nice additions that change up the gameplay and give you even more flexibility.

Depending on your skill level, you can finish the main quest of the DLC in a few hours, but for those less familiar it can take several more. Additionally, there’s one side-quest that can bump up the playtime, and it’s worth digging into. Regardless, with an $8 price tag, it’s an easy recommendation. It’s been a long time coming, but The Delicious Last Course is an excellent addition to Cuphead. Its presentation is a rare treasure that’s worth celebrating, showcasing outstanding animation and music alike. The new bosses are glorious spectacles, Ms. Chalice is a great companion to the original team, and The King’s Leap challenges you in all new ways. If this is the last we see of our cup-headed buddies, it’s a fantastic farewell. There are just over a handful of bosses to overcome in The Delicious Last Course (“DLC”, get it?), all set in their own unique area. It’s accessible early on in Cuphead‘s main campaign so if you’re a newcomer you don’t have to wait until completion to jump in. Not that it really matters, because The Delicious Last Course doesn’t exactly serve up anything vastly different.

That’s not a criticism, per se. There’s a lot to love about Cuphead. You can read our original review here to read more about it. But you only have to take one look at its beautiful art style to know that this is something special. It has the charm of a true classic cartoon, with characters just as memorable and iconic as Mickey and Pluto were when they were first drawn. So iconic, in fact, that in a full 360 turn, Cuphead actually is a cartoon now, thanks to a Netflix deal. What a time to be alive. But back to The Delicious Last Course. This isn’t going to appeal to you if you didn’t really gel with Cuphead in the first place. It introduces a new playable character, Ms. Chalice, who comes with her own suite of abilities, but make no mistake: this is still the same tough-as-nails game. And if you struggled with the original bosses, you’re still going to struggle here.

Developer Studio MDHR has even doubled down on its insistence that playing on “Simple” mode – a watered-down version of each boss designed to make it a little easier – means you can’t fully complete the game. This was a bugbear the first time around and today, with difficulty and accessibility discourse so rife, it feels even more egregious. Ms. Chalice’s unique abilities do, at least, go some way to make Cuphead‘s gameplay a little easier. She can double jump, her dodge roll makes her invulnerable for a short time and she auto-parries by dashing. Certainly on paper they feel like huge improvements over Cuphead’s more basic abilities. And since you can go back and play any level as Ms. Chalice, perhaps you now have a fighting chance of getting through on ‘Normal’ difficulty. Or so you can hope, anyway. The Delicious Last Course‘s bosses fit right in with those of the main game. Each foe you find yourself up against is as wonderfully designed as ever and, in terms of its art at least, it’s as masterful and joyous as you’d expect. There’s a new overworld section to explore with a smattering of characters, and despite being set upon its own island, it feels seamlessly integrated into the rest of the game.

If you’ve been longing for more Cuphead, then The Delicious Last Course is for you. But if you were, for whatever reason, hoping for a big shake-up in terms of gameplay or difficulty, you’re not going to find it here. Brutal but beautiful, this is simply more Cuphead, be that for better or for worse. Suffice to say it’s really hard to openly talk about the specifics of a lot of bosses without outright ruining them. It’s Cuphead. That’s kind of the whole thing. So I won’t! But I will say that the bosses themselves are fantastic, and true to form to how the game was built to this point from a mechanical standpoint. From a raw aesthetic point of view, they’re a straight-up step up. Several of them have absolutely bizarre scene transitions that warranted an outright out-loud gasp or belly laugh. Given the surprises the original had up its sleeve years ago, it’s nice to see that Studio MDHR still has the ability to surprise me. One stage (featuring the “Moonshine Mob”) really grew on me, with several very interesting phase transitions and an incredible marriage of music and visuals — even surpassing most of what the game had achieved thus far. You can really tell how the team put some extra seasoning on the visual style and the individual details for these new fights. Again, there are no run & gun platforming stages per se, but there is a set of “challenge rooms” that gets straight to the point, and will force you to master the parry system if you haven’t already.

At points such as these, The Last Course isn’t entirely at one with itself, then, like a world in which Mega Man was tossed into a Silly Symphony in the hope they’d get along. Equally, it still seems strange that, as indebted as Cuphead is to those old cartoons, it’s never found a place for their character development and storytelling techniques in its scenes. While the character design is visually stronger than ever here, these bosses are really only colourful mechanical puzzles, any personality they have condensed into their desire to kill you and how they react to being shot. This felt excusable in the original game, since the cast was so large. Now it sticks out as a missed opportunity not to bookend individual encounters with more context and sketch narrative arcs through the battles themselves.
