This initial intrigue doesn’t last, though, since all of the major parts and players in Lost Judgment’s main case have been identified and unmasked roughly by the start of the third act, which means any sense of mystery evaporates from there on out as the characters talk in circles and at length while re-examining the same pieces of evidence without revealing any new details. I kept waiting for a rug-pulling plot twist that never arrived, and despite the customary escalating boss fights in Lost Judgment’s closing chapters, I couldn’t help but feel like it was just going through the motions.I felt equally apathetic towards Yagami’s detective work which, despite some minor tweaks and additions, remains as disappointingly shallow and inflexible in Lost Judgment as it was in the original. Quick-time event-heavy chase sequences are repetitive and often ridiculous, running laps of the same small circuit and always seeming a few comedic toots of Yakety Sax away from being an actual Benny Hill skit. Meanwhile, the covert tailing missions are slightly less frustrating this time around thanks to the ability to press a button to “act casual” and hide in plain sight, but no less plodding.

Then there are the parkour sections, which are clunky enough to make an Assassin’s Creed fan want to fall on their hidden blade, and the stealth scenes that force you to throw coins in very specific spots to distract guards before you can take them out (just quietly creeping up behind them greets you with a greyed-out button prompt and no course of action other than to scurry back to your overtly signposted hiding spot). The added detection gadgets, like a highly sensitive microphone and a detector for hidden cameras, are certainly welcome but in practice they’re effectively not that different from the simple crime scene pixel-hunting from Yagami’s first outing. The one aspect of Lost Judgment’s sleuthing that does feel a bit more involved is Yagami’s ability to eavesdrop on conversations between pedestrians in order to pick up certain words or phrases that can be used as search terms in the Buzz Researcher app on his phone. It’s still relatively restrictive since you can only use the exact search terms you’re given, but as far as actual deduction goes it at least made me feel I was getting my hands dirty rather than merely having them held.And yet, despite all of these gripes, I can’t say that I didn’t end up enjoying my time with Lost Judgment overall, and that’s almost entirely thanks to the surprisingly meaty undercover side cases that Yagami can undertake at the Seiryo High School. Playing the role of a Japanese Johnny Depp in a 21 Jump Street-style high school sting feels refreshingly novel, and I enjoyed posing as a choreographer for the school dance squad or helping the robotics club refine their machines, while simultaneously sniffing around for clues to the identity of an unnamed professor suspected of recruiting students into criminal activity. Following a first entry that sometimes struggled to find its own space in the series, the Judgment spin-off returns, this time with a greater sense of purpose. With the mainline series now seemingly staying on its turn-based RPG path, Lost Judgment carries the action torch alone, its backbone provided by back-breaking real-time combat, complemented by a dazzling selection of the series’ ever-expanding side activities.

And at this point in the series’ lifespan, an expansive thing it is indeed. If you judge an open world game by its distractions and this is easily Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s best, its take on Kamurocho and the Isezaki Ijincho stuffed with things to do. Like Yakuza: Like a Dragon before it, it’s the sprawling bustle of the Yokohama district that serves as the predominant backdrop, and once again it’s a peerless piece of digital tourism – something that feels more necessary now than ever before. It’s possible to lose entire evenings to strolling the city, popping into late night bars for a tipple or two before spilling out onto the streets for a scrap or two with the delinquents that patrol the area, then stepping into a Yoshinoya for a quick beef bowl. Head home and there’s a Master System with pack-in title Alex Kidd, or you could pick up the likes of satisfying action puzzler Penguin Land. Or you might just want to play Lost Judgment itself. Takayuki Yagami returns in the starring role, once again voiced and with the likeness of Takuya Kimura, and once again playing a private detective dancing on the fringes of law, order and enforcement. Perhaps most pertinently for the player, he’s pretty handy with his fists, and like earlier Yakuza games before it this can be a fine brawler, Kimura kitted out this time with a third fighting style that lends the overstated combat even more flexibility with its counters and throws. Lost Judgment is a follow up effort from developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and publisher Sega on Yakuza spin-off Judgment. While the 2018 detective adventure was an enjoyable affair with some missteps along the way, the second story centered around Takayuki Yagami and friends is a clear upgrade, and one that will certainly cement interest in further narratives following the Yagami Detective Agency.

Lost Judgment is set three years after the events of the first game, with Yagami and partner Masaharu Kaito adapting to life after they exposed the perpetrators of a series of serial killings and coverups that rocked the Kamurocho district. That doesn’t last long, as an investigation into a bullying problem in Seiryo High School soon spirals into another web of intrigue, behind-the-scenes machinations, and murder.Lost Judgment is a game that effectively balances two narratives: the heavier story investigating bullying in Japanese high schools, and the lighter side narratives that see Yagami infiltrate Seiryo High School as a club advisor and help guide some of its students as they grow up and grapple with coming-of-age tales. While the stark tonal dissonance can sometimes be jarring, it’s also welcome, as the main plot of Lost Judgment pulls no punches and depicts some unsettling truths about the brutality of adolescence. Thankfully, Lost Judgment handles everything with grace, delivering an unforgettable journey that should be experienced with as little prior information about it as possible.

Any concerns that the sequel would be unable to top the character and world-building of its predecessor are shed early into the game, as Lost Judgment reunites most of its cast quickly and doesn’t ignore their development over the course of Judgment. Watching the motley crew of heroes assemble together – while adding a few more allies over the course of the game – and grow as people is immensely satisfying, and their interactions strike the right cinematic chords. Those charmed by Yakuza’s depiction of the underground of Tokyo’s criminal world will be similarly infatuated with Lost Judgment’s spin on things, though in terms of accessibility, playing through Judgment first is certainly the best course of action to enjoy the more minute interactions and surprises peppered throughout the narrative. Judgment wasn’t lacking a great story either, however, and its biggest stumbles came in the way it attempted to blend the action combat of Yakuza with detective elements. Lost Judgment is a game that learned from these failings, and the result is a title that successfully delivers on the promise of Yagami’s detective skills in a Yakuza spin-off setting.

The detective gameplay has been improved immensely in Lost Judgment, with more ways to discover clues in crime scenes, more side quests that make drone flying, dog walking, and bug scanning enjoyable, and a better balance between all of these options being struck.Tailing returns in Lost Judgment as well, but it’s not as big an element as it used to be, with missions using it more sparingly and the option being more fun as a result. While it remains largely unchanged, better use of environmental obstructions to hide and a new option to “act natural” when caught out in the open are welcome additions. Chasing suspects has become more dynamic, with health pick-ups to help balance out some of the more challenging obstacle courses and interactable objects laid out that Yagami can kick at the head of his target to slow them down.Lost Judgment also includes stealth missions, which are again used fairly sparingly but tend to be exciting when they show up. Yagami can infiltrate locations by distracting guards with coins or smoke bombs, either slipping past befuddled enemies or choking them out after they’ve wandered away from their post.Our Apartment
