Fata Morgana is an subject of bafflement, a tantalising enigma, and a frequent point of mockery, all because its Metacritic score (which was a perfect 100, and is now a measly 97) elevated it into being described as “one of the best games of all time” on Switch. although with a few caveats. If you’re a fan of visual novels, you likely already know these caveats. The Dreams of the Revenants edition of Fata Morgana — at around 40 hours for the main game, plus 15 hours for the Requiem for Innocence prequel DLC, plus 8 hours for the Reincarnation sequel DLC — demands a lot of your time, especially as the DLC unlocks sequentially. A significant proportion of that time is spent waiting. Waiting for things to make sense, waiting for the story to pick up, waiting for certain parts to be over. The beginning, in particular, is slow and boring, with a bunch of unlikeable characters that get themselves into predicaments because of irritating personality traits. People will repeatedly walk into painful situations out of inaction or poor decision-making at the beginning, and it can be frustrating. A darker caveat is that Fata Morgana can be incredibly, potentially upsettingly dark. The story deals with abuse, bigotry, sexism, torture, and basically any kind of mistreatment you can think of. It’s grim. But it doesn’t feel like torture porn, as with something like Danganronpa, because Fata Morgana doesn’t revel in its misery; Fata Morgana firmly places you in the shoes of the suffering.

But it does drag it out something fierce. The final caveat is that this would not, perhaps, constitute a “game” for many people. Quite frankly, that doesn’t matter for this review, but if you’re not into largely static, pretty hands-off visual novels, then this certainly isn’t going to convince you of their worth — in the same way that blue cheese is fantastic, but someone who hates dairy is never going to enjoy it. That doesn’t make blue cheese any less delicious to those who like it. But with the caveats and the cheese metaphors out of the way, it’s time to talk about everything that makes Fata Morgana worth the glittering praise, and the title of “one of the greatest visual novels ever”. As a story both happening in the past and the present, we experience history through the lens of The Maid, the themes of time and identity twist into a grotesque knot. Such unique storytelling conventions make for peculiar questions, such as asking “Is that me?” when a new character is introduced in the retelling of the past. Compelled by their deep-seated desires, the characters in Fata Morgana stride further into misfortune. Much like the Shakespearian plays that are often referenced in Fata Morgana, starting the story at the end only further stresses the feeling of despair established within the first moments of the game. Initially, sweet moments such as Mell and Nellie whiling away their childhood days are marred with an aura of dread. However, not all of this tale is grim. Aside from the anxiety caused by its story structure, most of its tale is bright with the cheerfulness and awkwardness of growing up. Even the comments by The Maid as she tells the story are interesting and her questions directed at the player character are engaging, when otherwise it may feel as though the player character is losing their place in the narrative. Visual novels, an underrated genre of games where the story is mandatory and the narrative needs to be efficient enough so that the player who interacts remains trapped and invited to “I want more” over time. They are interactive stories that need visual appeal and a depth in the characters in such a way that without whim, they can be easily left aside with a few hours of experience. The House in Fata Morgana is a visual novel originally released in 2012 that won this special edition called Dreams of the Revenants by Limited Run Games in April of that year. The gothic tale of suspense is set in a cursed mansion that spans nearly a millennium of tragedy, human nature and insanity. This Nintendo Switch version features the main story, a prequel to the origins and portent of Fata Morgana’s curse, as well as a sequel that shows current characters as reincarnations of past figures.

You — in the role of the protagonist — wake up in the mansion, knowing absolutely nothing about yourself or your surroundings. His only guide is a mysterious woman in maid’s robes who calls him “Master”. She offers to show you the past in order to remind you of who you are — and was — your relationship with the enigmatic woman and the dilapidated house she still serves. One of these three, in particular, is a genuine contender as one of my favourite examples of the genre ever. Legends of Talia wants you to think that it’s going to offer an epic fantasy adventure. Tracking along with the story of a hero of an empire in swords-and-sorcery times, this is a visual novel that promises dragons, drama, betrayal, action and some very fan servicey romance. Unfortunately, ambition well outpaces what this development team had the resources or temperament to give players. In fact, one of the biggest problems with the game is that the most interesting stories seem to be what happened before the actual plot that the visual novel itself follows. The great hero spends a fair amount of time through the course of this game reminiscing about past military campaigns and romantic flames that sound like they would be perfect material for some excellent pulp fantasy page-turning action. Meanwhile, what happens in the timeframe of this visual novel itself is a battle with a dragon and, without giving away spoilers, the hero has the opportunity to right a wrong from her past. It’s over in about two hours of reading, and because it is so brief, there’s never a chance to give anything context.

Rather, it’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it experience that doesn’t give you anything to think about, doesn’t say anything, and doesn’t really go anywhere. Imagine if you played a Final Fantasy game but only the first dungeon – you get to fight one boss and learn the names of a couple of characters, but you never really get to the crux of what is going on any why you should care. This is the problem with Legends of Talia. What it does have going for it are the key art CGs, which feature very under-dressed girls in very dynamic poses. The fan service hits real a real pin-up quality in this game (coming from the studio behind the Sakura Dungeon series this shouldn’t be a surprise). Unfortunately, those CGs are not backed up by the character sprites themselves, which are fairly simple and flat, nor the backgrounds, which are very simple and struggle to set the scene. Because there’s a limited number of character expressions available, the developers instead added an element of movement by having the sprites shift back and forth as characters “talk” with one another, but if you’ve got a decent reading speed the sprites shifting all over the screen for no reason whatsoever is a distracting look.
