Unlike a simulator where the focus is on building the railways and letting the trains run automatically, in Train Valley 2, the player can control the departure of the station trains as well as the intersections between different lines. Sounds simple, although its complexity increases as the player needs to create intricate railways with very little money, leaving little room for error. This mechanics were the very thing that got me enjoying the first Train Valley, where trains left stations randomly, making the game something like Flight Control but with trains instead of airplanes. The game has 50 levels covering all types of terrain, from flat and urbanized terrain to mountainous snow scenes. On Steam, you can download various levels and other elements to increase game content via Workshop. The graphics are great and very colorful, with a wide range of visuals that help on immersing the player with the scenery. Perhaps the only problem is the positioning of the camera, which is fixed and does not allow the player to rotate it, which makes things hard when the player wants to build rails on hills. The soundtrack is light, serves its purpose very well, but it is not memorable. The sound effects are simple but straight to the point. Controls are simple and generally functional, but sometimes rail construction can be a bit confusing Easy Red 2

forcing the player to spend more money than they would need to build the railroad. This usually occurs when cornering is required, especially on rough terrains. Train Valley 2 is a puzzle game that blends micromanaging with figuring out how to use your limited resources to complete your mission in as short a time as possible. Each level provides you with a map on which is at least one town and one or more resource buildings are scattered around. Some of these buildings are pre-constructed, others you will need to spend money on before it will produce anything. You also start each level with a set amount of money. You buy tracks, laying them down between the town and the various buildings around the map. In order to complete each level you must fulfill the needs of your town. The town may request six loads of wood or cows and glass for example.

You send workers by train from the town to the resource buildings, and once the resources are complete you send them back again to town. Sometimes you will need to send the resources onto another building in order to process it into whatever is the final product the town wants. When you make a delivery where it’s needed, you earn money. You can micromanage the trains, changing the switches on the track wherever it splits into two directions, pausing trains, or even sending them back the way they came. If you’re not careful, trains can even crash into each other and be destroyed and it costs money to replace them. If you were a fan of the first game the sequel, while using many of the same basic principles, sets itself apart sufficiently to keep it from being just more of the same. No more do trains tell you where they want to go and when they’re leaving. You control all of this, strengthening the micromanagement elements of the first game. While all it takes to beat a level is to make the required deliveries successfully without running out of funds to complete your goals, each level has various extra goals you can accomplish to achieve a higher star rating, which gives you incentive to play levels over and over again. These goals often involve beating the level under a certain amount of time, using no more than a certain number of tracks, or never allowing a train to arrive at the wrong station. These goals are often not easy to achieve, particularly some of the time ones, and this is where the puzzle aspects of Train Valley 2 are at their strongest. You need to carefully consider all your resources as well as the lay out of the map and the most effective ways to use your trains. As the game continues the maps get more complex and your goals more difficult to achieve. There is also nicely satisfying sense of progression to the game and new concepts are introduced such as bridges and tunnels.

Train Valley 2 starts in the steam age, and allows you to play through the industrial revolution. This allows new trains to be introduced as you play along and adds a new facet to the game as you have to decide when to use your money to upgrade your trains, allowing them to carry more and move faster. If you enjoy micromanagement with puzzle aspects, you’re going to have a lot of fun with Train Valley 2. It’s challenging, colorful, and casual. With twenty levels, each with replay value if you’re after a perfect score on all of them, the core game has a lot to keep you playing for a while. But even should you get tired of those twenty levels, there are plenty of fan-made ones to bring you back to Train Valley. Thankfully, while you’re always on the clock, you can pause time whenever you want. That means you can carefully plan for everything, making Train Valley 2 a surprisingly relaxing tycoon sim.

It’s cleverly designed, meaning that you’ll never be confused about what the game requires you to do as it gradually introduces new features as you progress. In total, Train Valley 2 comprises 50 levels that take you from the steam age to the space age and give a subtle history lesson in technological progress. Played from an isometric viewpoint, the scene you gaze down on in Train Valley 2 is full of delightful detail. The way that a factory blows puffs of smoke into the air, or tiny machines move wood back and forth, taps into some infantile part of the brain that sees this scene as a living world instead of a bunch of icons and numbers. If you wish, you can even zoom in for a closer look and pan around to see the consequences of your management prowess. Consequently, there’s a real sense of satisfaction when you pull it off, with an extra level of challenge given by optional goals like completing the level in a set time or ensuring that no train goes to the wrong place.

Train Valley 2 is generally a charming mental workout, but there are a few bumps on this smooth ride. Most significantly, building track can sometimes feel unnecessarily fiddly and there’s a bit of trial and error involved in working out where you can actually build, especially when it comes to slopes. Occasionally, icons can get in the way of junction switches, meaning that you might send a train of workers instead of hitting the switch you meant to hit. None of these issues come close to breaking the game, but they can get irritating. Slight niggles aside, Train Valley 2 is very easy to recommend to anyone wanting a laid-back management simulator. It’s a beautifully executed hybrid of puzzle game and tycoon sim that charms and challenges in equal measure. 18 models of locomotives to unlock and more than 45 types of train car – it’s up to you to keep things as efficient and cost effective as possible, while the world around you gets more demanding!
