The hallmarks of a traditional Souls game are all here, though operating under different names, with Runes replacing Souls, Crimson Tears replacing Estus Flasks, and Sites of Grace replacing bonfires. There are also plenty of familiar faces and items lurking around; the Souls games’ premier dirtbag, Patches, is basically the FromSoftware lucky mascot at this point. But stepping through the big doors to get your first proper look at the Lands Between is a very different experience. In this moment, you’re not so much confronted with the task at hand as you are with the terrifying enormity of possibility. Elden Ring’s Sites of Grace have been designed with a nifty new mechanic where they emit a light trail leading you to your next major checkpoint, and at the outset, they point to the first major dungeon: Stormveil Castle. And following that trail to the letter walks you straight into a fight with the game’s first major boss, Margit the Fell Omen, whom you are woefully and pointedly unequipped to tackle. In most games, failure is punitive. You either have the skill to beat a boss, or you don’t. In a Souls game in particular, you’re always meant to feel underequipped and underpowered. But in Elden Ring, failure against Margit is there to teach you one thing: that there is a main path, and getting there will never be a straight one. There’s adventure, there’s advancement, there’s aid, and there’s power waiting for you in every direction leading away from Margit. “Getting gud” is such a tiny sliver of what progress in Elden Ring looks like, and it’s less about FromSoftware placing bosses and obstacles in front of the player as it is about rewarding our willingness to be intrepid, creative, and truly courageous. And reward the game does. It’s easy to marvel at the undeniable vastness of Elden Ring’s world—an overworld the size of a small country, with not one, not two, but three full-fledged underground realms as big as multiple Souls levels in their own right. There’s no wasted space in Elden Ring. Even serene, enemy-less areas are telling the game’s story, offering the opportunity for players to look upon and ponder the ruined works of eons and despair. Back in 2009, no one could have actually predicted that Demon’s Souls would become one of the most influential games of the next 10 years. Hidetaka Miyazaki and his team at FromSoftware created a formula that, years later, countless studios would take as the basis for their future projects. Over time we have had many other games that have sought to replicate this same formula, and although some results are better than others, the truth is that to date no one knows how to do it as well as FromSoftware.

But what makes these titles so special? In video games, death is usually seen as a daunting element for users, and in many cases even frustrating. However, in the ‘Souls’, death is a fundamental pillar in the player’s learning process, and whoever really wants to master this kind of games will have to get used to dying dozens of times. Well, I’m happy to tell you that this same foundation is still present inElden Ring , the most recent work of FromSoftware that seeks to slightly alter the already well-known formula by introducing us to an open world structure that could well become a standard for future installments of the Japanese developer. With Elden Ring, FromSoftware seeks to deliver an experience that feels fresh, but at the same time, veterans of these games can feel at home, at least in terms of gameplay. And it is that Elden Ring is a completely new IP, so it has no relation to the other FromSoftware games. That is to say, the Dark Souls saga exists in its own universe, the same is the case with Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Demon’s Souls, so it is not really necessary to have any experience with these games to enter the Elden Ring universe. That said, It’s time for me to tell you in detail about everything Elden Ring is, and why I think we could be facing one of the best experiences I’ve played to date. Welcome to the written review of Elden Ring. I hug the wall as I creep down the cold stone stairs into the tomb, dagger in hand. Bitter experience has taught me to be ready for anything. For the last half-hour, I’ve been attempting to find my way to the bottom of this ancient ruin. It seemed easy enough at first glance; a series of narrow corridors all leading straight down. All I needed to do was follow the path. That’s when a giant set of spinning blades came thundering through the darkness towards me. Before I could react, they’d cut me to pieces and sent me back to the beginning. Several attempts and 32 minutes later, I finally reach the bottom to discover a green fog door shimmering and swirling at the end of the corridor. I know what this means, but I’m ready. After what I just went through, I can handle anything. I swagger into the boss’ lair… where what can only be described as a colossal undead tree drops from the ceiling and scuttles towards me, all snarling roots and rotting bark.

An Epic Drama Born from a Myth.

My dagger barely scratches its thick hide as it scoops me up, pulls me into the middle of the room, and devours me whole. Describing, as many have, Elden Ring as a more accessible take on the notoriously exacting Dark Souls formula is at once both entirely correct and also palpable nonsense. Certainly in the delirious moments you’ll spend galavanting around the wonderful wilds of the Lands Between atop your ghostly goat-cum-horse steed, Torrent, galloping away from enormous monsters who can skewer you like a shish kebab with a single thrust of their blades, you might start to feel a hint of the warmth provided by the snuggly safety blankets of more conventional games. Dare to progress down the main story path, however, and it’s a much different, colder story. I like to think of myself as an intermediate level Souls combatant. I actually completed Bloodborne, game director Hidetaka Miyazaki’s wonderful 2015 gothic horror PS4 exclusive (hey, I don’t want to brag, but…). And yet still it took me two nights and around two-dozen attempts to defeat Godric the Grafted, the giant golden axe-swinging, dragon’s breath-wielding Rune Lord we came in with. I’ve yet to meet any of his presumably more powerful peers but, despite the teeth-gnashing, fist-gnawing,

‘I’m giving up gaming forever’ frustration engendered by this encounter, I genuinely cannot wait to. One should try, though, as it’s almost entirely reductive – not least because difficulty is an entirely subjective concept. Miyazaka’s games are challenging, for sure, punishing even, but they’re also impeccably fair, strictly adhering to a complex set of rules. Once you, the player, has learned those rules, you can start to subvert them. And that’s where the fun starts. Elden Ring exponentially expands on that premise by introducing an open world setting to the formula for the first time. The intricately laid out castles, cathedrals, and cities of the Souls games still punctuate the major narrative beats, but they’re exclamation points scattered across vast pages of ridiculously picturesque fantasy-scapes. The closest comparison point is Nintendo’s exemplary Breath of the Wild setting (albeit with Hieronymus Bosch in charge of creature design); everything feels possible, and very little feels scripted. Here, exploration is everything. Elden Ring is an RPG but one which elevates role playing to the point of vérité.

You are as much the stranger in a strange land as your avatar; basic controls and some mechanics are explained in what passes for the game’s tutorial, but that’s about it. There’s no quest log, no icon-studded mini-map, no on-screen overlays or bread crumb trail telling you what to do next, or even where to go. Everything else must be learned, either decoded from oblique item descriptions in-game or gleaned from invaluable internet communities. Death is not so much a setback to be avoided as a necessary staging post on the path to enlightenment. It may sound daunting in theory but in practice it’s exhilarating. Every inch of progress in Elden Ring feels earned, and is thus infinitely more rewarding for it.In doing so, I’m minded of a recent observation by the venerable videogame journalist, Chris Schilling, who likened Sony’s increasingly homogenous brand of blockbusters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (neither criticism nor insult, I might hasten to add). Viewed through that lens, Horizon Forbidden West is Chloe Zhao’s flashy but ultimately unfulfilling MCU effort, Eternals, while Elden Ring more resembles her intimate and captivating Oscar-winner, Nomadland.
