For the FOURTH year in a row, EA Sports has released a virtually unchanged edition of FIFA onto the Nintendo Switch. As stated on the official website, “FIFA 23 Legacy Edition will feature the same gameplay innovation from FIFA 22 without any new development or significant enhancements.” As a reminder, here’s what was written there for last year’s game: “FIFA 22 Legacy Edition will feature the same gameplay innovation from FIFA 21 without any new development or significant enhancements.”Oh, and the year before: “FIFA 21 Legacy Edition will feature the same gameplay innovation from FIFA 20 without any new development or significant enhancements.” And to complete the set: “FIFA 20 Legacy Edition will feature the same gameplay innovation from FIFA 19 without any new development or significant enhancements.”

Due to the FIFA license sailing away from EA towards pastures new next year this will be the final EA game called FIFA to appear on a Nintendo console. What a sad legacy to leave behind. Next year we’ll likely be reading “EA Sports FC 24 Legacy Edition will feature the same gameplay innovation from FIFA 23 without any new development or significant enhancements.” EA, you did it again. You messed up the launch, again. Like you do every year. It is totally unacceptable that you charge almost 100 bucks for the Ultimate Edition that grants you 3 days early access – let us be real, that is why most of us buy Ultimate Edition – but launching the game 3 days early is basically a game of Russian roulette – either you are lucky as hell and the game launches and plays, or you are unlucky like thousands of consumers and get error messages, failing anti-cheat and whatever else there is preventing people from getting what they paid for. This is a complete slap in the face to your customers and something you should adress immediately. The anti-cheat is a good idea and I am glad it is coming to PC, as the previous iterations of FIFA on PC were clearly plagued by hackers – so this is a welcomed addition, but the execution of the anti-cheat is horrendous. I know people that bought the Ultimate Edition that should have been able to play the game 2 days ago that still can not launch the game due to the anti-cheat being absolutely garbage. Fix this. Bugs, where do I begin? There are a plethora of bugs in the game, from missing sponsors on a dozen of kits, visual bugs like the ball becoming super blurry and the performance of the actual game itself completely tanking. I am on a 3060 and an i5-11400CPU and there is no chance in hell my FIFA should be full of stutters and lags. The lag in the menu is atrocious, set-pieces and cinematics (I love the addition of cinematics)

Local Seasons

Is PLAGUED by frame-drops which makes them horrible and painful to look at. Given how much of a copy-paste game FIFA is every year, these bugs are inexcusable. Usually, every year, we are used to getting the new stadiums of the teams that are promoted to say the Premier League. Where is Nottingham Forest’ stadium? Last year you had to give us Leeds’ stadium through an update later and you were excused due to COVID, but what is the excuse now? This is just laziness – you mean to tell me a billion dollar company like EA with well over a year of development can not make the stadium ready for release? Call this nitpicking, but for me it is the small things that matter. As far as actual gameplay goes, I do enjoy the feeling of the players and the ball. It feels like the players and the ball have actual weight to it now and it feels muchless arcade-like to me. I thoroughly enjoy the slower pace feel, although it could do with some fine tuning. The new engine makes a massive difference (thank God you brought it to PC this year) and it is noticeable, so in that regard I am hopeful for a good year of FIFA. With all of these things addressed, I would like to say this year sees the end of an era. I started playing FIFA in 2003 on my brother’s original Xbox and I have played pretty much every iteration since. I grew up with the game and I have so many good memories like coming home from school and inviting friends over to play some FIFA. That is what the beautiful game is all about – the game that has seen us cry, laugh, angry and every other conceivable emotion possible. The game we know as “FIFA” will be no more, but that does not mean the end of football games – I am hopeful for the future and I HOPE that EA will start caring more and focus on improving their games and game-modes that have been heavily neglected (I am looking at you, Career Mode and Pro Clubs).

Let’s hope for better.While half the world says, “FIFA is the same game every year”, EA writes exactly this description about the Switch version as a reason to buy it (?) – sorry, but how can this lame update cost 40 bucks every year? The new jerseys and the transfers are included, the graphics are tweaked a bit and commentator quotes are added – but that’s it.Contrary to plans announced ahead of launch, EA has retained chemistry after all. But it’s nothing like you remember it. Now the maximum possible ‘chem’ is 33 rather than 100. Players are still rewarded for having team-mates or fellow countrymen elsewhere in your Ultimate Team line up – just without the need for them to be adjacent to one another. And while chemistry provides a gentle stats boost, crucially there’s no punishment for deploying a player on zero. Son is deadly down the left in an otherwise all La-Liga squad.

My fear when EA announced this revised Ultimate Team chemistry system was that it would dilute the intelligence required behind team-building, but it’s actually refreshing. Big, big tick.

Division Rivals matches form the heartbeat of FUT, and make for a pleasant surprise – for now, at least. Human opponents offer tactical variety, and the effectiveness of sitting deep in order to counter with two pacey strikers is toned down, but this is the one area of the game impossible to score on opening weekend. As elite players figure out the meta, super cards spark power creep, and patches arrive, online matches are going to evolve in unpredictable directions. So I’m willing to commend the online play, but only with a ‘watch-this-space’ asterisk. The neatest FUT addition in FIFA 23 is Moments. Shamelessly lifted from the Madden games, it sees you completing sequences of quick fire offline tasks – goals from Kylian Mbappe’s Monaco years, Jurgen Klopp’s managerial highlights from Mainz and Dortmund – to unlock a tiered selection of rewards.
