Disney Dreamlight Valley is like Animal Crossing with more story and less waiting. Excellent quality of life improvements mean a whole lot less faff; your watering can is never empty, tools never blunt or break, and stamina can be renewed by munching down on a handful of berries – which are plentiful around the Valley. There is a day and night cycle that’s linked to your own, but very little is limited to waiting for the next physical day, a la Animal Crossing. However, the reward is worthwhile, since this is the only way to access the valley’s other biomes and, by extension, more crafting materials. Some quest requirements get stuck in a similar rut, but the payoff from most of them – even if it’s just seeing how new characters interact with established residents – makes it worthwhile. You can also take a break from grinding by spending Dreamlight in the valley’s castle to access realms, small areas themed around a certain character such as WALL-E, and invite them to live in the village. The game is just out today, but there are plenty of user testimonials and reviews to answer this question for us. Such quirks are what you typically expect from early access games, and coupled with an unclear plan for the future, recommending Disney Dreamlight Valley for $30 doesn’t come without qualifications, but what’s here is fun. Disney Dreamlight Valley is a frictionless, relaxing spin on life sims that manages to remain heartwarming and charming, despite a few Switch-related rough patches. Dreamlight Valley’s unique identity relies heavily on fresh interactions with your in-game friends, and Gameloft will need to continue supporting it with regular updates to keep the Night Thorns from creeping back in. However, what’s here at launch is surprisingly touching and thoughtful, and cleverly plays on the nostalgia of anyone who’s ever been a Disney fan. Admittedly, the Realms are more compact than I imagined they’d be – particularly poor Wall-E’s – but you’ll nevertheless find yourself returning to them as you begin to complete each character’s quests and level up your friendships with them. This is key to progression in Disney Dreamlight Valley, as simple acts of kindness – like hanging out, exchanging gifts, and simply checking in on your new buddies every day can help take your friendships to the next stage. Doing this will not only give you fun quests to carry out, but it also gives you access to themed items and outfit options for each character.

Smooth and nearly seamless gameplay

It’s indicative of Gameloft’s broader design here. Disney Dreamlight Valley clearly wants to make itself approachable and fun for everyone and goes out of its way to make tasks that are often unpleasant in other life sims as convenient as possible. Every recipe, even experimental ones that should be vile failures, produces something useful. You can water whole swathes of soil with one use of the watering can. Fishing spots bubble back to life after just a few minutes. The whole experience is frictionless, minus the occasional tedious segments, and lends itself perfectly either to short check-ins to craft a few items or longer sessions getting your house just right. In other words, it’s a perfect fit for the Switch – theoretically. In reality, Dreamlight Valley needs a fair bit more optimization to run well on Nintendo’s hybrid console. Camera stuttering and frame rate issues are common in handheld mode, while both docked and handheld mode struggle with severe menu lag, long load times, and a few moments when Dreamlight Valley just gives up and crashes. Even after the dozen or so hours we’ve sunk into Disney Dreamlight Valley over the weekend, we feel like we’ve barely scratched the surface of what it has to offer.

And so this is a review in progress, which we’ll revisit once we’ve spent more time with the game. Just here to let you know this game works on Steam Deck. Game crashed during the opening, but changing to Proton Experimental fixed that. Change the refresh rate to 45hz, set the game graphics to medium or high and you’ll have a pretty solid experience. The game itself is super fun so far! I can see myself sinking way too many hours into this… An issue right now is that the Ultimate Edition perks don’t show up in-game. I bought the Ultimate Edition, but can only see the Deluxe clothes and furniture in my inventory, not the Ultimate ones. I’m sure that’ll be fixed soon, but it’s worth noting. Will edit my review when they do show up. Sometimes that’s only busy work: we might have to work on improving a friendship, for example, before a character will give us a new quest. Or perhaps we’ll need to earn several thousand more coins before we can afford the next upgrade (of a house, or shop, for example) that we need to progress. There’s also Dreamlight to be earned, which is important to unlock new areas and to head into new Realms – perhaps the most exciting part of the whole Dreamlight Valley experience.

Dreamlight is accumulated by doing various tasks, all of which can be tracked in your in-game menu. You’ll complete many of these without even trying as they’ll overlap with your regular in-game activities: collecting fruit, talking to characters, upgrading your house, crafting items. But when it comes to needing to focus on collecting Dreamlight, you may need to put your nose to the grindstone and concentrate on certain menial tasks. That’s if you’re wanting to progress through quickly, of course. Dreamlight gates off new areas of the world, and by unlocking them you’ll find new characters and new quests. It also gates off Realms – and we’ve only jumped into one of these so far: that of Remy, from Ratatouille. BONEWORKS
