Until You Fall Free Download GAMESPACK.NET Until You Fall reminds me that, sometimes, the idea behind a great game will echo through the (console) generations. Having reviewed a lot of mobile games, I see some similarities between playing games on an Oculus Quest in 2020 and playing games on an iPhone or iPad in 2010. Both offered ground-breaking portable technology for their time and a curated app store stuffed with notable indie games. Plus, some of the best games on each platform are not deep, console-like experiences. Instead, they focus on high replayability and reward persistent players. Until They Fall is very much in that same style, but it lacks the personality to go with its long-lasting premise. If you’ve ever played the Infinity Blade series on iOS, you might have an idea of what to expect from Until You Fall. The setup is essentially the same. You play as an unnamed swordsman, brought back to life, again and again, to fight hulking knights and glowing monsters. Earning just a bit more in-game currency each time allows you to gradually update your weapons. Your weapons contain upgrade slots for power-ups, and can also charge up a super attack through repeated use. It’s a nice feeling to hold down the grips on each Quest controller and watch your weapons magically materialize, but they disappear as soon as you let go. You won’t be able to throw them around and interact with the physics in each environment. TOP/BEST ADULT VIDEO GAMES IN UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (USA)

Clanging them together and watching the sparks fly, however, is a fun way to taunt your shambling foes. With each playthrough, you’ll find yourself in the same enchanted crystal forest, with only minor variations in terms of scenery and enemies. The arenas are small, and locomotion can feel a bit disorienting, so you’ll likely rely on a limited dash function that also serves as a sneak attack. Once you’re up close with an enemy, on-screen prompts will tell you where you need to raise and hold your weapons to block. Successful blocks will weaken your enemy’s defense meter. You can return the favor with a series of damaging combo swipes. Due to the constant on-screen prompts and meters, the swordplay feels overly busy at times, with a cluttered heads-up display that detracts from the immersion. When you relax into Until You Fall’s familiar routine and view each encounter as a moderately physical warm-up instead of a life-and-death battle, it becomes more enjoyable. I find that it helps to think of these monsters as friendly sparring partners at the gym, who are just trying to help you get your steps and swings in for the day. Needless to say, this takes a long time, and you may tire of the same few environments and enemies before you can take on the game’s more challenging fights. Switching up weapons does add variety, and the random upgrades will make every playthrough feel slightly different. Some big bosses also require you to duck and weave, like a bladed version of Knockout League. Until You Fall certainly has a winning design due to its weapon upgrades. Still, a small degree of charm is missing from the experience.

Intense physical gameplay stay active to stay alive.

The aforementioned Infinity Blade (a mobile game with a similar style, but certainly not made for VR) had frightfully intimidating opponents. Until You Fall’s zombie knights are just hanging out, looking sullen. Like Sairento VR and Ninja Legends, a few other Oculus games give you the feeling of becoming a deadly combatant, with a variety of unlockable weapons and extras. Those games also manage to present a unique and occasionally surprising game world. I’d like to see Until You Fall add more story details or atmosphere while also keeping the more successful gameplay elements intact. I originally played Until You Fall during early access on Stream. The game felt great at that time, and I must say it has only continued to improve after leaving early access in Oct 2020. Between the gameplay, graphics, environment, and soundtrack, this game does so many things right. Even if it still has a few issues. This is our Until You Fall review. The game has you take on the role of the last Rune Knight, being helped by the Runesmith. Your goal is to fight your way towards the fallen city of Rokar to destroy whatever has caused the city’s destruction. It is a simple plot but compelling once you fight your way through to the first boss encounter. Being a VR game helps here. I found myself more invested in the story with each battle since VR immerses you so much in the world. Dead Alliance

When starting the game, there are several accessibility options you can set to help with issues like the chance of motion sickness and selecting if you are standing or seated. It was nice to see the different options and how customizable they are in the menu. The gameplay difficulty is set in-game at the forge. There are three crystals to choose from, and then you crush one to make the selection. Being the total badass that I am, I went with Relaxed play, giving me a health crystal back after each area I cleared. Other difficulties award more Aether while making the enemies faster to attach. If you find a difficulty setting not to your liking, it can be changed the next time you return to the forge. Progressing through the game is simple. You enter an area with X number of enemies and fight until the area is cleared, then select from one of three rewards before moving on to the next fight. Rewards are randomized each playthrough and include things like an extra health crystal, heal up to 5 crystals, adding abilities/mods to your weapons, more combo swings, and Aether. Each weapon has different traits you can see by holding your character’s palm face up and pulling the trigger. They also have different physical properties. For example, the ax swings slower, making it tough to block when compared to a sword, while some weapons you cannot block with at all. These weapons provide other bonuses instead too your other chosen weapon. I found all the weapons to be well designed. While I didn’t necessarily enjoy using each one, they were all interesting to test out.

A variety of gorgeous, neon-tinged environments.

I keep finding myself swapping up weapons to try out different playstyles. Some combinations compliment my playstyle much better than others. The combat in this game is fast-paced and fun. It gets you moving, and if you are like me, out of shape, you will be sore after an hour of play. You start slowly enough, but after a short tutorial, it quickly picks up pace once the basics are out of the way. Fighting multiple enemies at the same time will require you to think about where you are standing and if anything is trying to flank you. Players also need to move weapons quickly into multiple block positions. Depending on the enemy, the attacks can come at you fast. When it comes to larger enemies and bosses, you will also need to duck and dodge, avoiding unblocked attacks. The game easily gives me a decent workout. Supporting the combat is a high-energy soundtrack. While some may find that a synthwave soundtrack doesn’t fit well in a fantasy setting, I found the color palette that the developers have chosen helps it feel at home. Also, once you get into a rhythm of moving from fight to fight, the music really keeps you going. Games like Robo Recall and Superhot VR have absolutely turned this hobby on its head for me. Having to relearn nearly every single facet of my training since the ’80s is a bit insane, as the more intense VR experiences have challenged me in ways no game of the last several decades ever has. For the aforementioned duo above, a certain degree of 360-degree situational awareness is key. Until You Fall toys with that very same concept, but also adds in a degree of physical fitness and stamina. The short of it: Until You Fall is a roguelike built around medieval weapons, in which you need to progress through stages (filled with enemies) until you eventually reach the final boss. It’s filled to the brim with “roguelite” elements too, like permanent upgrades that will eventually ease you into overcoming obstacles through sheer force of will. Of course, you can also just play really well and circumvent a lot of that fiddliness. Although there is a story (you’re saving the realm), it’s mostly in the peripheral with the focus on frenetic hand-to-hand combat. As a knight, you’ll start out with a sword in your dominant hand and a dagger in the other, as you block, strike, and dash your way to victory (with as little or as much VR vision training wheels as you’d like, depending on your motion sickness tolerance). Dashing (which doubles as an escape or a dive attack) is governed by a meter, which refills over time. Other than that, your job is to slice and block to remove enemy guard meters: which in turn will open them up for wide slices (the wider the better, damage-wise). This creates an interesting dance where you can’t just blindly swing like you’re chopping up dinner, as you’ll need to stop and carefully position your blades within the block lines to parry.

Encounters with cadres of corrupted monstrosities, each requiring different strategies to be defeated.

This in turn chips away their meter and creates a nice little rumble feedback effect. It’s fun from the tutorial on, but once I really started to dig in and come across some of the minibosses (which required rapid blocking, or actual real-life dodging), I was enthralled. Playing this on a tethered headset is fun, but the freedom of the wireless Oculus Quest is just unreal and adds so much. You can walk or look around unfettered, which is supremely useful when there’s multiple enemies at the gates of your visor. Pretty much everything I could think of, developer Schell Games put in. “What if I don’t want to block or attack with both weapons?” Well, early on you can buy a gauntlet that doesn’t allow blocking with whatever hand you equip it in but provides other bonuses like extra health. “What if I want to swap what weapon is in what hand?” You can do that from the hub between runs. “What if I get super tired and need to take a break?” Saving and quitting will return you back to the same level mid-run. Nearly every quality-of-life upgrade is present in Until You Fall, which just goes to show you how far VR studios have come since the infancy of the medium. It needs all that too, as it can be really tough at first. As I’ve said many times, learning this game is a far cry from picking up nearly every other traditional project I’ve played for ages. You need to be in tune with the game’s patterns, which require elaborate and swift hand motions.

You can’t fake it or cheat it, especially as you start to square off against some of the crazier denizens this world throws at you. Even on normal difficulty (called “challenging,” one of the three settings), it’s very taxing, yet rewarding. Prepare for the fight of your life. Move your arms and body to the synthwave soundtrack as you attack, block, cast spells and dodge your way deeper into the heart of a neon fantasy world filled with magic-infused monsters. Equip yourself with a variety of gameplay-altering weapons as you continue to gain strength and strike down the monstrosities that lurk within Rokar. Rokar has fallen. Once a civilization fueled by a magical power called Aether, the Rokari have been destroyed by a Calamity of unknown origins. Now, monsters and twisted spirits wander these crystallized ruins. As the last remaining Rune Knight, you alone can fight back these horrors. With the help of a mysterious Runesmith, you will forge the weapons needed to complete your campaign. Are you the Champion that Rokar needs? While our opinions over games, genres, and platform preferences can differ, if there’s a single consensus amongst TheGamer editing staff, it’s that virtual reality has hit its stride with plenty of room to grow and thrive. From the Oculus 2 to VR battle royales, virtual reality as a platform feels great, and can sometimes even be the preferred method of playing VR-capable titles.

Last year, TheGamer’s Eric Switzer previewed Until You Fall, and couldn’t have been more excited about what he experienced and the future potential that the game held. Already available for Oculus Quest, as of today, version 1.0 of Until You Fall is officially available on Steam (with a 20%-off discounted price for a limited time) along with all other platforms. Having checked out the game when it was available for free on the Oculus Quest, if you’re looking for a solid VR swordplay experience (without defaulting to Beat Saber), then look no further: Until You Fall is it. Until You Fall is a VR hack-and-slash roguelike that takes you on a journey through a brilliantly colored crystal wasteland known as Rokar, which is now overrun with monsters and twisted spirits that only you – the last of the Rune Knights – can take down using your magical weapons and special abilities. Each run brings procedurally generated levels and enemies, as well as the loot and buffs that you are awarded after clearing each level. Rinse and repeat until you fall (get it?), and you’ll be sent back to your base of operations to improve your weapons and stats before heading back into the world of Rokar and doing it all again, each time more powerful than before. Upon entering the menu area, heavy rock synthwave floods your auditory space, leading you to vibrant neon visuals of a dystopian wasteland. These same types of themes follow you into the game itself as you encounter demonic foes and massive monsters who tower over you. Thankfully, accompanying you on your journey are your dual-wielded weapons, along with the skills and know-how for using them effectively. I Expect You To Die
