As you leave Ravenswatch, you’re left with a sense of peace and contentment that only comes from experiencing the beauty of nature and the warmth of a tight-knit community. It’s a place you’ll long to return to, time and time again. Ravenswatch is a particularly unique take on the familiar conceit of an action roguelike RPG, which puts its cast of heroes at the forefront. Pulled from the pages of classic fairy tales, and given a dark fantasy twist, these heroes band together to vanquish an encroaching force of powerful nightmare creatures – or die trying. Coming from the developers of the action-RPG sleeper hit Curse of the Dead Gods, Passtech Games’ Ravenswatch left me intrigued after some extended hands-on time with the closed alpha, which put a hero-centric spin on the good ol’ fashioned dungeon crawler. Playing as one of six hero characters – pulling from stories such as Little Red Riding Hood, Beowulf, and The Snow Queen – you’ll freely explore an overworld filled with demons and other opportunities to amass power to face off with powerful demons ruling the land. Throughout this adventure, you’ll learn the ins and outs of your chosen hero as they unlock their latent abilities to purge the land of corruption.

Customizable Characters.

Ravenswatch sticks close to the formula of a dungeon crawl, but it hones that focus more into an adventure game that has a larger goal to accomplish. With each chapter taking place across five days, the main goal of your multi-day jaunt is to build up enough power to be on equal footing with the stage’s end boss, allowing you and other party members to take them down and move on to the next phase of the quest.Infinite Guitars

What impressed me most from my time with the closed alpha was the cast of heroes, and how their unique skills and personalities add flavor to their adventures. Along with adding new abilities and buffs, you can also unlock special ultimate attacks that can deal heavy damage, such as Beowulf’s super which calls in his pet dragon to rain down flames on foes. Ravenswatch shows the potential of adding hero-centric characters into a dungeon crawler game. Seeing these characters I’ve read about in childhood live out that sword and sorcery fantasy is such a fantastic premise. While the roster falls into classic archetypes like the close-ranged brawler or zoning magic slinger, their personalities and narrative touches also shape their playstyles. For instance, The Pied Piper uses his enchanted flute and swarm of rats to attack foes from afar. As he gains aggro, he can lead enemies away, weaken their defenses with his spells, and then pick them off with his music. Another standout was Aladdin, who’s presented as an agile brawler type who can hack and slash through foes. But when he needs to call in an assist, he can summon the Genie to beat down the opposition and even grant Aladdin one of three limited wishes to support the party or wipe out surrounding enemies.

Challenging Levels.

The most surprising stand out to me was Meluise, a mermaid and siren that can strike at enemies with water magic. Yes, you can step into the role of The Little Mermaid in this dark-fantasy action RPG, and she’s awesome to play as. However, she also proves to be the most technical character of the roster, as her attacks plant her firmly into position as you use the siren’s song to attack enemies. And just like in the classic fairy tale, you’ll need to slink away from approaching an adversary when they get too close. I really admire the many clever design choices at work with the current roster, and they each play so differently from one another. Ravenswatch does have Passtech’s trademark artstyle and procedural level design. Each stage is a series of rooms (though it’s more open than in CotDG), and each one may contain upgrades such as chests or tomes tied to timed challenges. Upgrades are somewhere between those found in Curse and the system seen in Hades. Levelling up gives you access to a choice of randomised upgrades, the right combinations of which can utterly change how you play. They can add effects to your existing skills, or modifiers to damage type, health regen, or critical hit. The real feather in Ravenswatch’s cap, though, is the character roster. But that doesn’t change the fact that each feels utterly unique to play as. Scarlett, for example (that’s Little Red Riding Hood to you and me) is a werewolf. During the daylight portion she uses bombs and daggers and sudden strikes, but when the sun sets she transforms into a huge beast that deals higher damage and can tank hits at the expense of her original speed. You can’t control this change either; it’s entirely beholden to the ticking clock. Then there’s the Pied Piper, who acts as a ranged character pelting enemies with musical notes and building up a horde of rats as you play, that you can unleash on a target to do huge damage. The Snow Queen commands the elements to freeze and control the enemy. Used in conjunction their powers can synergise in interesting ways. For example, the Piper can lay down an area of effect that weakens enemies, the Snow Queen can slow those who come through it, allowing Scarlett and Beowulf to go to town with dps on enemies trapped inside. Combat is fast and responsive, with the same sense of fluidity and impact as we saw in Curse of the Dead Gods. Enemies will attempt to overwhelm you, mixing attack patterns and types almost randomly. When you die you can resurrect using a shared pool of raven feathers, but when they’re gone the run is over and you’ll start afresh. How progression will work between runs isn’t entirely clear yet, but certain elements do carry through.

Boss Battles.

Ravenswatch at present features one “Chapter”, though I’m hesitant to really call it that. There’s literally no story delivery currently on show, with a simple loading screen still-image and your 6 available heroes as all that stands as exposition. What is this land? Who are we within it? The narrative chops are, at present, about as imposingly tall as Lord Farquad. As such, I can’t tell you very much about its story at all. The heroes themselves however, are quite intriguing. Each controllable character is a creative spin on old folk or fairy tale legend. Little Red Riding Hood as Scarlett, The Red Hood, that kind of thing. The designs of each hero and their accompanying powers are fantastically inspired and creative, offering not just visual variety but unique gameplay dynamics too. Once you’ve selected your legend of folk tales, you’ll spawn into Ravenswatch’s first chapter level. In this land of seemingly no context, there’s a “Nightmare” which is corrupting the world around it. You have 4 in-game days with which to arm, level up and prepare yourself for a showdown bards will sing of for generations. There’s clearly a lot more planned for Ravenswatch in terms of lore and narrative, but I simply can’t tell you anything about it as the available version has none.

This is gameplay only at this stage, which is disappointing given the premise of the heroes. However, once you come to terms with this, you can get to the good old dance of hacking and slashing through dozens of beasts in rogue-lite action. Each level presents unique challenges and obstacles to overcome.  Collect power-ups to gain special abilities and advantages, such as increased speed or invincibility. Face off against powerful bosses at the end of each world, testing your skills and strategy. Use in-game currency to purchase new characters, power-ups, and upgrades.  Earn achievements and rewards for completing challenges and reaching milestones. Share your progress and achievements with friends on social media platforms. Each class has their own unique set of attacks, abilities and style. Pied Piper and Melusine for example, excel at keeping enemies at distance and peppering in damage or buffs to teammates. Scarlett or Beowulf are more melee centered, with an emphasis on sword/knife swipes and powerful specials. Scarlett also transforms into a werewolf with a whole new set of abilities at night, which is awesome.

As you progress in a run and level up, you can upgrade abilities much like Hades’ boon system, adding extra effects, buffs or stats to your combat arsenal. It’s fulfilling and the difference between level 1 and level 5 is substantial, plus at level 5 you unlock your hero’s powerful super move. However, range-focused classes are at a significant disadvantage in certain tasks and boss fights compared to their melee counterparts, particularly on harder difficulties. Ravenswatch feels tailormade for co-op and squad gameplay with how each hero performs a unique role. I had more than a few frustrating moments getting butchered trying to use a ranged character in a closed off horde circle and the Nightmare boss is a giant pain-in-the-ass for certain heroes as opposed to a satisfying challenge. Given how (not very) far along Ravenswatch is in its development, it’s hugely impressive how graphically beautiful it is and how smoothly it runs. The animations are superb throughout, from the fairytale book menu system gliding about the pages to the way Aladdin can gracefully dive out of the way of damage, it all looks fantastic. The cartoon-ish, animated art direction suits the sense of these characters wonderfully well and some of the enemy designs are excellent too. The Cycle Frontier
