you’ll need to protect your charge and ensure the various minions you encounter don’t snatch her. Two-man Italian developer RuneHeads has used Ico as its other big inspiration, but much like the attempt to ape the solid systems of Souls, this indie title fails to capture what made Team Ico’s PS2 classic so evocative. The game never provides a reason to care for her from a narrative perspective, and while her presence does provide helpful buffs (such as increasing the power of your attacks) her role almost always devolves into a 12-plus-hour-long escort mission. A majority of your time in Fall of Light will be spent swinging various weapons at an endless parade of incredibly similar humanoid enemies, so it’s perpetually frustrating to have to do so via a completely unintuitive combat model. Nyx is apparently so old his animations are glacial, leading to painfully slow swings of your weapon (even as a light attack). A big part of the problem comes down to input lag.

It simply takes too long for a button press to manifest itself as an on-screen command, and considering its entire combat system is built on the ability to dodge, block with your shield and strike, you’re either cut down because the game didn’t respond in time or because your stamina ran out too quickly. It’s a problem that has affected the game in its other ports on console, and while we applaud the fact that RuneHeads has effectively dealt with these new versions by themselves, the fact remains you can’t ship a copy of a game built entirely around Souls-like combat and have a battle system that’s too broken to facilitate any sense of learned skill. Dark Souls and Bloodborne work because you learn their ways and earn every victory. Fall of Light relies too much on chance, with enemy hitboxes often so random that every roll and swing is a lottery at best. There are 20 stances to choose from, and 10 weapons to find and utilise, but they won’t save you from the same ghoulish issues. Whether you’re playing on PS4 or PC, candles glitter in graveyards and glowing mini-bosses bristle menacingly like embers, but on Switch, everything just looks so dim and dull. One such title releasing this week is Fall of Light: Darkest Edition, launching in rapid succession alongside the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, following its initial release on PC last year. This Darkest Edition (a definitive edition in all but name) includes all of the content from the original release, as well as some console exclusive content for that added extra appeal. The first title from indie studio RuneHeads, Fall of Light takes inspiration from Dark Souls and ICO, yet promises to deliver a distinct and unique experience.

The question is, however, is does this game shine brightly enough to stand tall in such a crowded week? Yes, yes it does. There’s issues with the game, and we’ll get to that shortly, but for the most part, Fall of Light is a decent action RPG that will keep you entertained for hours on end. Even if you’ve played the original version there’s still some fun to be had here that you wont witness elsewhere, such as the all-new dungeon, complete with new dangers and enemies that are exclusive to this edition. So without further ado, let’s get stuck right in and see what all the fuss is about. Fall of Light is set within a world consumed by darkness. Players take on the role of Nyx, an old warrior that is taking his daughter, Aether, on a perilous journey to reach the last place on Earth that is still touched by sunlight. Much like Dark Souls, Fall of Light isn’t heavy on serving you a story on your lap. Instead, you’ll need to summarize as you venture deeper into the experience and engage with the game’s NPCs, lore and environments. As alluded to already, the plot is something you can soak up and build upon at your own pace. It’s never going to sit alongside its inspirations as far as quality is concerned, but I will commend Fall of Light for being bold enough to tackle such an inclusive and distinct design. Though again, this is really an aspect of the game that will vary from player to player, simply due to the way that it’s laid out. In regards to the gameplay, it does take some getting used to during the initial stages of play. Not so much that it detracts from the adventure at hand, but there is a steep(ish) learning curve. The actual gameplay is much what you would expect to see from a game of this type. You’ll traverse the dark and dank world within, uncover heaps of secrets, and slay whatever stands between you and your goal. The controls respond wonderfully and remain precise across all fronts, leaving most failures down to player error. I rather enjoyed the world within, as well as the game’s visual design. There’s a lot of variation throughout the entirety of play as far as the environments are concerned, ensuring that the vast and daunting trek rarely becomes repetitive or boring.

Fall of Light sports an almost isometrical-like perspective. This works well with the game’s visuals, which, whilst far from groundbreaking, are well detailed and refined from start to finish. The same can be said about the audio, which upholds the gameplay’s theme nicely with sharp, accurate cues. I was slightly somewhat disappointed with the soundtrack and felt as though something with a bit more kick would have been better suited, or at least something darker and more inline with the adventure, but for the most part, it gets the job done throughout, nevertheless. There are times when I am amazed by FromSoftware’s influence on the Role-playing genre. For better or worse, the punishing damage and stringent stamina management of the Dark Souls series has bled into a number of independent titles. While some, like Salt and Sanctuary, manage to blend these mechanics into a Metroidvania overworld with numerous looping paths and unique traversal mechanics, others go for a more direct, dare I say, soulless approach. Taking the committal attack animations, limited healing, and grimy aesthetic influence is one thing.

Choosing not to refine these concepts can separate a great game from an average one. In other words, there is a difference between succeeding at making a Souls-like title, and attempting to make one. What does this all have to do with Fall of Light: Darkest Edition? This isometric perspective action-based Role-playing game certainly has its own unique flair, possessing some unexpected mechanics and novel narrative twists, but it falters in its execution of some fundamentals in a way that damages the entire experience. Having played a steadily increasing number of titles with similar foundations and design influences on the Nintendo Switch, this puts Fall of Light at somewhat of a disadvantage. In the end, does the product remain satisfying as a whole, or does it leave players in the dark? To set the stage, a father and daughter duo set out on a journey through the vast chaotic world in what many others have called a blend between Ico and Dark Souls gameplay. The father, a strong and somewhat malicious-looking knight, is able to pick up a number of different weapons, ranging from the standard sword and shield to the more unique axe and mace dual-wielding combination.

Through the use of light and heavy attack inputs and a back-step and dodge button the player is expected to navigate a series of environments and enemies in order to collect the materials needed to shepherd your daughter to her safety. The Ico comparison comes from the way you occasionally interact with your companion, the protagonist’s daughter Aether, who is born of light. By holding the Y button, you can grab her hand and drag her around at a brisk pace without draining your stamina. At least, until she trips over and must hobble along for a brief period. Likewise, she can be commanded to stay in a certain spot so that she won’t be pummeled by enemies, or to solve one of the few partner-based puzzles that exist. Her greatest benefits are the way she enchants the player’s weapons within a certain radius, giving them a meager offensive bonus, and her ability to level up the player character by praying at certain alters- an act that also acts as a checkpoint and save system. Despite this, there are times where the player will fall in battle, which leaves Aether exposed to two different types of danger- either being killed on the spot, which can be subverted through a strange and snappy resurrection mechanic upon finding her soul.
