If you’re reading this and raising your eyebrows at the audacity of white men, Act Zero says that’s the point. “The game deliberately plays on the cliché of “a white male’s journey to an exoticized world” and subverts it” through gameplay and perspective. The protagonist spends 2 months with refugees and knows that it isn’t enough time to even scratch the surface of their lives, and what they’ve been through. However, they face a moral dilemma. Do they make up the information to make their book a better read, or do they make do with what they’ve been given? What the protagonist does with that information is up to the player. To prepare for developing We The Refugees, the writers team visited the Moria refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesvos. There they spoke to a number of refugees to learn about their stories, and presented the prototype of the game to refugees and volunteers. The script was also reviewed by experts from relevant NGOs and consultants.

A relatable perspective on a complex topic

The protagonist is a European who tries to enter the world of the refugees as an outsider. The game deliberately plays on the cliché of “a white male’s journey to an exoticized world” and subverts it. Back in 2017, I used to volunteer at the “Welcome Café” in my hometown. This was a place where refugees would visit to learn German, do homework, hang out and get help in various matters. There were many people there from all sorts of places. Africa, Syria, Arabia, Albania, Ukraine, and others. A lot of different people joining together to celebrate their differences and receiving help from volunteers like me and some older folks in the area. In the “Welcome Café”, we essentially helped refugees with translation and studying. I was the youngest among the volunteers but knew the most English, so I helped a lot of them learn German and I’d translate for those that spoke Albanian. The game is metacontextual – it is not only a reportage about refugees, but also an interactive fiction game presenting the very process of creating a reportage. This way, the player discovers both the player discovers both the refugees’ journey and a writer’s challenges of exploring the subject.Based on true events, the writing process was preceded by a series of interviews with refugees who were familiar with the concept for the game. To make this possible, the writers team visited the Moria refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesvos, where the prototype of the game was presented to refugees and volunteers. Hence, families often have no other choice but to send their young children onto a journey across the sea, often without food or drink, one where they’d often not survive or where they risk drowning in the process. Also, once you’ve set foot in one European country, you can only get asylum in that country, even though the border countries are flooded with refugees and are barely able to handle it, the EU doesn’t really change much about this “rule” or at least in the way it’s enforced.

5 countries to visit & a sea to cross

Each refugee the player meets has a unique story about their journey. The developer has stated here at Gayming that each refugee has reasons for fleeing to escape persecution. This could be because of war or something else entirely – each character you encounter has their own struggle and will talk to you about it. For example, a character who is gay and finds it hard to live with their sexual orientation in countries that do not accept the LGBTQ+ community. Act Zero has also stated that the game features a very interesting African tradition, in which two women – under certain conditions – can get married, and it is socially acceptable. The tradition is called “Numba ntobhu.” It is a marriage of convenience but is not sexual in nature. Most importantly, We The Refugees doesn’t want to be seen entirely as a soul-crushing game, and there will be some joy to be found.

Even though the refugees you talk to are fleeing and looking for safe harbor, they still laugh and love, strike up friendships, and ultimately want to live a normal life. At the same time, though, not every place has the capacity and means to house so many refugees and thus, it’s a difficult subject to deal with. My hometown was to house 1,000 refugees in a camp and some apartments – our population was barely scratching 6,000. We also didn’t have enough refugees and before long, many people left and the project died out. So, in my opinion, we should help other countries out, especially as we’re privileged to live in the first world. We can’t just end the wars, though, as that will just create more wars – so the least we can do is take in refugees and give them a safe place in our countries until they can eventually return. That being said, the topic is incredibly complex and it’s not just that simple, obviously. I think the members of the EU need reforms of their laws, the most.
