Fully optimised for the next-gen with 60fps promised on Xbox Series X|S, along with the inclusion of Smart Delivery and 4K visuals, on the face of it United Assault – Normandy ’44 should be one to excite. We’ll find out with a full review when we can. The problem is, Polygon Arts don’t have much of a rich history in these type of games, having previously delivered the utterly dire Strike Force Terrorist Hunt (we gave that a 1/5 in review) and Beyond Enemy Lines – Remastered Edition (a game we reviewed with a 0.5/5 score) coming before this one. We’ll obviously see what’s what but it may be worth you holding back on the cash for now. If you disagree and reckon that United Assault – Normandy ’44 is one for you, get over to the Xbox Store and fill your paratrooping boots for £12.49. United Assault – Normandy ’44 is an open world rogue lite FPS set in 1944’s depiction of Normandy. You are a US army paratrooper dropped into enemy territory to prepare the D-Day. Your mission objectives vary form destroying Panzer IV tanks, Flak 88 cannons to obtaining secret documents or even liberate an entire town. After completing your objectives, exfiltrate and claim your rewards.

Game could still use some AI work and I’d stil like to see a more robust upgrade/level system but so far so good Love the concept and especially the notion of a passive multiplayer that can change things dynamically as your game session goes. The background combat sounds are amazing Pretty good foundation so far, but there are some things I’d like to see improved or added: The ability to change the volume The weapon wheel needs work. Doesn’t always come up when clicked Ability to map gun slots to buttons like 1 for weld gun. Batora: Lost Haven

They Should be able to shoot out windows/break the glass AI seriously needs improved. You can shoot them at range where they can’t see you and they just take it. AI should be doing something. They just stand around. Would be cool to see them patrol a bit more or even engage in combat with other AI or something. Maybe lose points for killing friendlies in the process. Make this bit more immersiv Would love to see sniper missions More with levels. We get new guns every couple levels, but maybe some kind of perk system, inventory, or something like that. This game is super disappointing. The trailer and screenshots showcase beautiful environments and a minimal HUD, when in reality, what you get is a flat lighting scheme and a cluttered HUD, which together just draw more and more attention to the copy-pasted assets spread throughout the map. All of this combined with the goofy AI just makes for a boring experience. I really hope the developer continues to build on and improve this game, because I think that it could be a truly unique and enjoyable experience, but in its current state, it’s just not worth the price.

Over 15 authentic weapons.

I have continued to play the game as updates release, and while the developer has definitely made improvements since I bought it, his commitment to content updates and franchising over quality control shows that the game still has far to go before it’s earned the price tag it currently sports. The concept is killer. Drop the player into a realistic WWII map with Nazis to kill and randomized objectives to complete. Unfortunately, as it stands now, the actual game delivers on little of this promise. Gunplay is floaty, enemies constantly deal tiny amounts of damage, enemy sight lines are unpredictable, exploration is slow (most buildings and towns lack any identifying features), much of the combat is firing at enemies randomly dropped into open fields, enemies move while shooting with robotic precision, and you lack any meaningful stealth options. XP is only awarded after finishing a mission, which can take you 10-15 minutes wandering around sparse maps being constantly pestered by enemies that never really feel like a threat. Sometimes, you get to the exfil point, only to be killed by a mob of Nazis in a hail of gunfire that is somehow both comical and strangely boring, causing the last 10-20 minutes of your life to be completely wasted. I also would call into question the label of “Roguelite” here. The objectives are randomly assigned, along with your starting position, and enemy placement, but United Assault appears to have exactly 1 map that is unchanged for each run. There is no progression through floors or new arenas. While roguelite is a flexible term, I would not be confident calling this a roguelite. There’s potential in the concept, and the execution is better than many on Steam, but currently (Nov 3, 2021) this feels much more like a prototype to workshop mechanics than it does a public release worth asking money for. Given this developer’s track record, and the similarity to their previous titles, I don’t know if the concept’s potential will ever be delivered on here. The concept sounds good but the execution is atrocious. The A.I. is quite possibly the worst I have ever seen they don’t respond to sound only direct line of sight and if you get an object between you and them they become unaware of your existence.

15 towns and settlements based on their real world location.

As soon as you get a rifle you can just kill all of them from a distance while they just stand there. The map is large enough to make the lack of an in game map annoying, and the game gives you no direction towards your objectives leaving you to wander about massacring the hapless A.I. and blowing up conspicuously unmanned tanks and heavy weapons. the graphics are decent enough but the animations are very stiff and unnatural and the destroyed state of objects looks like a light coating of rust applied to an otherwise unscathed model. There are some things that could be improved but the developers has a survey open that will give people an opportunity to add ideas….however I do dig the large open map with objectives. It’s a neat idea Updating this after many patches. The updates seem pretty regular and many of the things mentioned below have been implemented. The objectives are randomly assigned, along with your starting position, and enemy placement, but United Assault appears to have exactly 1 map that is unchanged for each run In my preview I already mentioned that the Campaign starts with Operation Phoenix. A team of six tries to infiltrate a base to steal classified documents. The contents of those documents? It’s top secret even for the Nazis guarding the base. In no time at all, the mission goes awry, your team is captured and interrogated one by one by a sneaky Nazi named Jannick Richter, played by Dominic Monaghan. If Monaghan sounds familiar to you, it’s probably because of his roles as Merry Brandybuck from the Lord of The Rings movies or as Charlie from the TV series Lost. During the interrogations, your team members are interrogated individually and this gives the story the opportunity to give each team member individual missions with retrospectives. It gives Sledgehammer Games the opportunity to visit various locations such as the battle of Midway in the Pacific, battles in Tunisia with Panzer divisions and the cold battlefield of the Soviet Union. Because of the structure of the story you get to know the four main characters a little better. Each character has its own skills and traits, but the positive outlier in my opinion is the Russian Polina Petrova.  General Practitioner
