Tormented Souls Free Download GAMESPACK.NET It’s a phrase so familiar to fans of classic survival horror games that its appearance at the start of Tormented Souls almost feels comforting. Since the mid ’00s, the genre has been bent and twisted to keep up with the changing times and the growing fatigue around overused mechanics in franchises like Resident Evil and Alone in the Dark. The classic survival horror tropes of the ’90s — fixed camera angles, stationary aiming, and careful item management — have become all but extinct. Tormented Souls is a love letter to the classic horror games of the ’90s; a true homage that embraces the genre’s origins. It’s a shame, then, that it largely struggles to measure up to such a high benchmark. The game starts off on a bit of a sour note with an opening sequence that’s both blurry and jittery; it’s almost a callback in itself to N64-era cutscenes, but it’s clear that the presentation is simply a byproduct of the game’s port on Switch, as such performance issues aren’t noticeable on other consoles. Once you get into the gameplay itself, however, the presentation fares much better. You awaken in a small x-ray room as protagonist Caroline Walker and immediately the fixed camera angles signify that this is old-school survival horror through and through. Soon after, you pick up a lighter that can be used to illuminate the dark surroundings, and the shadows that dance across the rooms as you walk through them is a genuinely impressive sight to behold.”TOP/BEST ADULT VIDEO GAMES IN UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (USA)

As you explore, you’ll encounter puzzles and enemies that will make die-hard survival horror fans grin from ear to ear. Enemies will often lie in wait, just out of sight of whatever camera happens to be fixed on Caroline; it’s a strong way of ramping up tension in certain scenarios, but in others, the lack of visual cues is downright frustrating, particularly when the odd positioning of the camera causes you to lose your sense of direction. Similarly, aiming with your weapons is very much ‘classic’ survival horror; you can aim in any direction, but moving your feet at the same time is unfortunately an impossibility for Caroline; you’re fixed in place. Thankfully, there’s a dodge mechanic that can get you out of tight spots, but since you can only dodge backwards, it’s useless if you’re backed up against a corner. Puzzles will also look familiar, but their implementation feels a bit more involved than other survival horror games. Tackling them requires very much the same process: you’ll need to explore your surroundings, gather items, and combine them together to unlock new paths and obtain key items. The inventory screen implements the use of an on-screen cursor, which can be used to select items and move them directly into the in-game world. You can also examine items and select specific parts of them to interact with directly. The on-screen cursor makes the process feel pleasantly intuitive, and you’ll be able to see the effects of your item usage in real-time.

Deadly Combat.

Ultimately, although Tormented Souls is a commendable homage to classic survival horror games, its focus on the past is unfortunately its biggest downfall. Advertisements for the game bill it as a “modernisation” of the genre, but the mechanics within feel as archaic as the games it’s emulating. At around seven hours or so in length, you’ll have a decent time here if you’re a die-hard fan of horror games that wishes some of the big names would revisit their origins, but for everyone else, the fixed camera angles and limited combat may prove more frustrating than nostalgic. Add to that some technical hiccups in the way of dodgy cutscenes and animations, and you’ve got a game that very much plays second fiddle to the more established survival horror games on Switch. Survival Horror had its “golden age” in the 90’s, following a strict set of conventions and tropes. Tormented Souls, by Dual Effect, aims to utilize the core mechanics of Survival Horror but with a modernized twist. Detailed backgrounds, complex puzzles, limited supplies, and backtracking are all present here. However, Tormented Souls also adheres to the fixed camera perspective of older titles in the genre. This makes for a frightening, claustrophobic journey through an old hospital with dark secrets. A grotesque adventure that pulls you into its mystery from the moment you begin. Originally, Tormented Souls was released in August 2021. For those seeking a traditional horror game, akin to Resident Evil, Silent Hill, or Alone in the Dark, this title came with that classic formula.Black Book

Sticking to the use of fixed camera angles to elicit fear in the player, Tormented Souls also attempts to adapt to a modern gaming landscape. The atmosphere is thick, the fear is full-on and the setting itself uses Playstation 1 era techniques to command your emotions. From the outright gross to the deepest of chills, Tormented Souls captures what makes Survival Horror so fantastic. That said, it does so in its own compelling way. The story starts by introducing our heroine – Caroline Walker. One day, she receives a picture of twin sisters from an old hospital. A handwritten message on the back beckons Caroline to visit. Upon arrival, she is knocked out. You awaken, naked in a bath with a tube down your throat and an eye missing. Clearly the victim of some awful surgical procedure. Once Caroline puts her clothes on, the rest is up to you. As you progress, you meet a rather unsettling priest and find diaries scattered around. As with classic Survival Horror games, through reading these diaries you find clues and unearth the depravity of this diabolical hospital. More than merely telling the story through writing and dialogue, the setting itself shows that Winterlake Hospital is not a place where people are treated. Instead, it’s a place where people are butchered in aid of some wretched cause. The hospital/mansion is a maze of mystery, the corridors of which you’ll need to familiarise yourself with to survive. The enemies are amalgamations of the human body and surgical structures. Pained creatures fused with wheelchairs or IV stands. Victims every bit as much as they are hostiles.

Keep Your Wits About You.

What stood out to me was just how effective the staples of vintage Survival Horror can still be in manipulating fear and tension. Tormented Souls looks like a modern title. At times it really is wonderful to look at. It feels (largely) slick and responsive to play. But what Tormented Souls achieves is greater than that. It’s the first game I’ve played in a long time that made me feel as apprehensive to proceed as those aforementioned titles once did. Genuine horror is a difficult thing to get right. Yet Tormented Souls is clearly developed by a team that have mastered the craft. As hinted at earlier, Tormented Souls works with conventions that shaped Survival Horror. The fixed camera angles are very cinematic, but it also means there’s no camera control to player movement. Instead, you’re drawn by the camera to move a certain way. Or, if you’re confronted by enemies, you panic and make a mad dash to the nearest exit. That’s because for the bulk of the game you only have two weapons at your disposal. A crowbar (which is a weak melee weapon) and a nail gun. The latter is fairly effective, but clips of nails are in short supply. Also, being in pitch darkness will very quickly kill you. To combat this, you make use of a lighter. However, you cannot have your lighter and a weapon equipped simultaneously. These factors combined mean that for the early portion of the game, you’re faced with the task of prioritizing when to engage and when to avoid combat.Greak Memories Of Azur

You’ll eventually be able to craft a rudimentary shotgun out of pipes you find. The drawback? The gun only holds one shell at a time and shells are even more scarce. In keeping with this theme of managing supplies, there is absolutely no autosave in Tormented Souls. Instead, you save at tape recorders and as you may have guessed, you need to find reels of tape to save with. This makes saving your progress a strategic decision. The puzzles in this game are very tricky and are often multi-layered. You can closely examine items in your inventory and in some circumstances interact with them. This means that puzzle solutions are often a mix of being observant as well as making sure you’ve fully inspected your items. The game introduces this immediately, with the first puzzle of the game requiring you to unlock a coded padlock. I won’t give away the solution, but the code requires you to find a clue on a note, examine something in your inventory and deduce the code. As you solve puzzles, find keys, and combine items, you’ll then have what you need to access areas of the game that were previously locked. This means backtracking through the nightmare and if you’ve opted to avoid killing enemies in certain areas, they’ll still be there. Waiting Way back in 1996, Resident Evil was released on the original Playstation, and it enthralled and traumatized gamers in equal measure. With a focus on exploration, puzzle-solving, and good old fashioned zombie blasting, the game was a massive hit for Capcom and several sequels followed. But that was then and this is now.

Fiendish Puzzles.

Survival horror games have changed a lot since the mid-90s; so many of the tropes that gamers were familiar with back in the day – fixed camera angles, pre-rendered backgrounds – have largely become a thing of the past. Most games in the genre are fully 3D these days, with a greater freedom of movement and more fluid character control. For the most part, this is a good thing, as while we can look upon those older horror games with fondness, they were sometimes frustrating to play. Fixed camera angles often equated to an increased number of game over moments, as it wasn’t easy to see where enemies were on screen. And the tank-like control scheme and twitchy camera of older titles also caused many a death, as players struggled to move their characters away from danger. Still, if you have ever wanted to return to the style of early survival horror, you are in for a treat with Tormented Souls. It’s not exactly a great game but it will scratch your itch if you’re wanting a game that has much in common with Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Clock Tower, and other 90s horror titles. Despite being a throwback to games of old, however, the storytelling here is fairly forgettable. It lacks the world-building of Resident Evil or Silent Hill so don’t expect to be overly invested in the plot during your playthrough time. The game puts you in the shoes of a young lady named Caroline Walker who receives a letter and picture relating to two missing young girls. As this is a video game, she decides against calling the police. Instead, she journeys to Winterlake Hospital, the supposed location of the girls, and attempts to find out what happened to them herself.

It’s not a bad concept but as the story is very thinly drawn, you will be more interested in the old-school gameplay than the plotting. This is assuming you were a fan of classic survival horror titles. If you were, you should get a kick out of the game as it should be a very nostalgic experience. But if you’re looking for something more modern, more akin to Resident Evil: Village than the first in that franchise, you will probably spend a lot of time cursing and throwing down your joypad as you play the game. Why? Well, the camera can cause issues, as angles suddenly switch during movement, so you will experience a lot of disorientation when you’re traversing the game’s fixed environments. The save system is the same as that used in old Resi titles, so you have to find tapes (in place of Resident Evil’s ribbons) if you want to save your game. As these are in short supply, you will have to be careful about when you use them, as you may have to replay difficult sections of the game if you run out of these by saving too often. While investigating the disappearance of twin girls at Winterlake, something terrible happens to Caroline Walker. Waking in the dead of night, naked and hooked up to some kind of outdated medical equipment in a bathtub, Caroline must fight for her life as she explores the halls of the abandoned mansion. Tormented Souls draws inspiration from classic survival horror like From Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Alone in the Dark. A modern take on the fixed-perspective action-adventure game, Tormented Souls offers a modernised control scheme and dynamic camera combined with classic gameplay.

And the control scheme is difficult too. As with many older horror titles, you are unable to move while shooting, which is especially problematic when you’re trying to reload as the various abominations can finish you off within seconds if your gun isn’t ready to shoot. Expect to die, a lot! These aren’t the game’s only problems though. The voice acting is as dire as it was in the original Resident Evil title and the dialogue is fairly weak and predictable. Many of the game’s puzzles are fairly abstract too, so you may need to look up game guides online to find the correct solutions. And the story’s resolution, while fairly interesting, is told too abruptly and may leave you wanting. This game won’t be for everyone then. But on the plus side, the graphics are good, and the lighting effects as you move through the dark with your torch are mostly excellent. Resource management is less of an issue as it was in Resident Evil, so you won’t have to backtrack a lot to pick up any items you need for puzzles. And there is a palpable sense of dread as you move through the game’s cleverly created environments, as you never know what will emerge from the dark shadows to fight you. So, despite the frustrations inherent within Tormented Souls’ gameplay, it might be that you will enjoy a playthrough of the game. This is especially true if you’re craving an old-school horror experience. There is a demo available in the PS store, so give that a go before playing. If you like what you see and you’re not put off by the stilted controls and obtuse puzzles, you may gain some enjoyment from this. It’s a worthy spiritual successor to horror titles from gaming’s past even if it doesn’t do a lot to stand apart from them.Call Of Juarez Gunslinger
