Yes, it’s clearly a direct response to the phenomenal success of the Overcooked franchise, and no, it’s not quite as good. Nevertheless, that doesn’t make Tools Up a bad game, as such (it’s actually great fun when you get a few friends together), but it often trips over its own feet with over complicated tasks and fiddly controls. Rather than immediately telling the players what to do, your first task is to locate a blueprint located within the working area. Opening this with X then lets you see a list of jobs to undertake, and also allows you to rotate an otherwise static camera in order to take in your surroundings properly. Once you’ve got your bearings, you need to locate and utilise paint pots and rollers and other bits and bobs to complete the task at hand, before tidying everything up when you’re done and dusted. At its core, Tools Up is very endearing in its premise, and for the most part, it works pretty well. Sadly though, the controls just aren’t quite as responsive or intuitive as you’d hope, and you’ll find yourself slipping up – quite literally in some cases – frequently. Additionally, objects in close proximity cause confusion, and you’ll often pick up the incorrect object, resulting in a lot of wasted time. Nevertheless, if you’re after an alternative to Overcooked, then Tools Up offers up enough incentive to take the plunge, even if it doesn’t quite match up. The Nintendo Switch is the perfect system for couch co-op video games, with its Joy-Con and portability allowing for easy co-op play without having to carry heavy and expensive controllers or hardware around. Naturally, developers and fans alike flock to the hybrid console to utilise this accessibility, as seen with the success of Overcooked 2, Snipperclips, and The Stretchers. Tools Up! is a quintessential co-op game that should no doubt find its place in the library of every family, flat/house, or couple who love playing games together. Tools Up! follows a team of decorators tasked with refurbishing thirty different rooms in a strangely designed apartment complex. This involves a variety of different tasks usually seen as mundane by anyone who doesn’t have a passion in interior decorating.

The assigned tasks are written down on a set of blueprints, and these are vital to a successful playthrough. Whilst some of the decorating choices are not to my taste (carpets in the bathroom?), due to the uniqueness of every apartment in terms of room layout and the desired décor, Tools Up! avoids creating a gameplay loop that is too repetitive – a mistake many co-op titles make. The blueprint system can turn annoying, however, as when you get to the more complicated levels it becomes harder to make out what is required in each room and how it should be applied, especially when must be holding the blueprint and waste valuable time to access your tasks. The difficulty scaling of Tools Up! works well for easing newcomers into a new style of gaming, perfect for a couch co-op game that is frequently played with the less hardcore gamer. By the 10th apartment, however, things get much more hectic, with slippery floors, lava, and manic dogs disrupting your attempts to renovate the apartments. Pesky deliverymen will deliver more supplies at random times throughout the level, forcing you out of the apartment to take them before he runs off, along with your much-needed supplies. It reaches a point though where this innovation grinds to a halt, and some final levels don’t offer as much challenge as you would hope. Controls are relatively simple for all ages to grasp, requiring only a few buttons on one Joy-Con. They are occasionally unresponsive in picking up and putting down items, this is made much more noticeable in a game where speed and finesse are vital to completing the level before time runs out. What separates Tools Up! from other co-op Switch games is that there is some order amongst all the chaos. Gone is the traditional brute force carnage you might expect from a game in this genre, as once you finish redecorating the apartment you need to ‘tidy up’ all the mess you made to get a perfect score. This includes any paint spillages and waste materials you ripped up, and all the tools used in the level (including yourself), making the bin the most crucial piece of equipment in Tools Up. New characters add an incentive to obtain a perfect score on each level other than for progression purposes, although it could have been interesting if The Knights of Unity had experimented with giving different characters unique abilities or stats to add an extra element of team-building and strategy to an already solid co-op title. There’s something so innately satisfying about laying down wallpaper and tiles, at least in low-stakes simplified video-game form.

Grout, glue, and mortar are a mess to deal with in real life, and while the same can be said for Tools Up, that’s part of the fun of arcade party games. Plus, cleanup is a cinch. Each of the 30 levels is a time trial of sorts – a several-minutes-long race to finish as much of a home-improvement work order as you possibly can in exchange for a one- to three-star rating at the end. While the clock ticks down, you’ll rush to pick up and read blueprints, figure out which room needs what done, grab supplies, and divvy up duties if you’re playing cooperatively (which is what I’d recommend). A typical home might require new walls – either a particular style of wallpaper or shade of paint – and new carpeting. In both cases, you’ll likely need to rip out the old to make way for the new. You’ll tear everything up, toss it in a bucket, bring said bucket to the dumpster, and get to work. Except, you usually won’t have all your supplies right away (they’ll be delivered at random intervals by an impatient delivery guy who won’t wait around long), and you won’t know precisely what each finished room should look like without manually inspecting the blueprints to see a preview.Warhammer 40000 Battlesector

Oh, and you can’t leave a mess. Paint buckets will spill. Rolls of carpet won’t sit still. You can accidentally rip a door straight off its hinges. There’s no shortage of ways in which you or your pesky teammates can tear the place up. It’s not enough to finish a job to the homeowner’s specifications – you also have to leave it spotless. So even if you “win,” you aren’t getting the full three star-rating if you forget some supplies inside. My favorite parts of Tools Up were the moments where tight quarters proved tricky; where we genuinely had to work together – either to run to the front door for an out-of-nowhere delivery, or to move heavy furniture out of each other’s way – rather than kind of just separately do our own thing. I also love how flooring works. There’s a “cooldown” period after placing each segment of flooring that prevents anyone from walking over it – a slight wrinkle that requires planning and communication. As you settle into Tools Up, you’ll probably expect to see new environmental themes, but there are just a couple, including slippery floors and lava pools. You’ll also probably expect the game to introduce fresh concepts over time to keep you on your toes, but aside from wall-busting demotion and bricklaying, there isn’t a whole lot else to discover.

The levels have a strange meandering pace overall. For instance: the final mission? Not so bad! Definitely much easier than the random level in which a tiny dog terrorizes your group, blocking the path and knocking supplies over every step of the way. While Tools Up! has a single-player campaign, it thrives as a couch co-op. This was made abundantly clear in the materials provided for this review. As such, I decided to jump right into the local multiplayer action with my two nephews. As the first level loaded up, we familiarized ourselves with the controls shown on the loading screen. From there, it was basically the wild, wild west. The countdown timer started, and we were left to figure out on our own exactly what we were supposed to do. It took a good half hour before we had a solid grasp on what was required of us and how to go about getting it done. Speaking from my own experiences, game mechanics are fairly easy to pick up without needing to go through an in-depth tutorial. Our initial entry into Tools Up!, on the other hand, would have benefitted greatly from an in-game tutorial. The game build used for this review will receive a Day One patch that will include “significant improvements to the UI and tutorial,” which will be a great asset for new players. After all, once players grasp the concepts of Tools Up!, that’s when the real fun begins.

Players are part of a construction crew tasked with renovating various houses. The crew must work together to get all of the work completed before time runs out. Work includes everything from painting walls to laying carpet, with demolition and clean-up playing a major role as well. Players can grab and throw items to help (or hinder) the team, and can even grab and throw other players. Time limits are based on the number of players, but don’t think for a second that it’s easier with more people. If anything, having more people on the crew (up to four total) makes it even crazier. Each level is comprised of multiple rooms, most of which require some sort of work. Items such as paint and buckets used for mixing cement can be found scattered throughout the level, which when knocked over, creates a mess that needs to be cleaned up. The more accidents that happen – with chances of accidents increasing with each player added – the more likely it is that you won’t be completing the level in time. During my playthrough, we found that we couldn’t afford a single slip-up, which added to the chaos, frustration, yelling, and, ultimately, the laughter that took place even when we failed. Unfortunately, some of the slip-ups were due to the mechanics being a little too touchy. In order to work on the rooms, players need to interact with the highlighted spaces they are looking at. All too often, nothing would happen when clicking on a highlighted space, wasting precious seconds. Or our characters would inadvertently grab an item (or another player) that was in the highlighted space.

These were more frustrating than they were game-breaking, and we were able to adjust our gameplay to work with the touchiness. Hopefully, the Day One patch will address these issues.
