Styles that ought to clash like the wrestling finisher of the same name often synchronise beautifully, with the likes of Crypt of the Necrodancer or the more recent Lair of the Clockwork God brilliantly fusing the rhythm/roguelike and point-n’-click/platformer genres to greatly entertaining effect. Both great in and of themselves, not such a superb match unless you’re trying to attract squirrels. Which, in-game, we suppose you could well be. It’s all rather nice-looking, with SNES-style pixel graphics demonstrating well-drawn sprites and backgrounds, but it’s all a little bit familiar. The locations you’ll visit aren’t particularly novel or memorable. A forest. A cave. A different cave. It’s function over form, but contributes to a somewhat banal aesthetic. Thankfully, though, visual spectacle isn’t the point of Monster Sanctuary. What, then, is the point? Well… good question. The platforming sections are basic, but enjoyable, with large areas that connect logically as well as plenty of locked-away treasures that require the field skills of a particular monster to access. Much like the HMs of Pokémon yore, you’ll need to use these skills to burn up vines, break down walls, or simply achieve air by hitching a ride with your flying friends. These are smart, thoughtful uses for the monsters you’ll gather, and makes them feel like something more than just options in a menu. It’s a little rudimentary as most of the functions effectively amount to “key in door” – and there are plenty of keys to find in order to open doors, too. Capturing said monsters for your personal use is a matter of acquiring eggs when enemies drop them in combat, which when you think about it is a touch macabre. You can, of course, rename your little tykes à la Game Freak’s ever-popular money pit, but that’s about where the meaningful comparisons end, as Monster Sanctuary is a very different kettle of fish. As you move through the extremely traditional Metroidvania map, you’ll encounter free-roaming gangs of monsters; no random battles here. Running into them will initiate a battle, and it’s this pugilism that makes up the lion’s share of your gameplay.

Master the Monster Sanctuary!

Battles in Monster Sanctuary ain’t short, and if you want to level up your crew, you’re best off initiating every single one you come across. What this amounts to, in our experience, is lots and lots of long, slow fights. On average, we found it takes about three turns to defeat a single monster, and every battle is three-on-three, so that’s a lot of turns if you allow for enemy buffs and healing. Of course, this does vary, but we didn’t find anything we’d call straight-up “fodder”. There’s an option to play the battles in double speed, but honestly this really doesn’t make it that much better. Taking the length of the battles aside, though, there’s a lot of meat on the bone in Monster Sanctuary; min-maxing your team’s stats could become an obsession, given that there are multiple skill trees for each beastie and plenty of held items/accessories to customise your onslaught even further. It’s all totally transparent, too; skill trees are laid out with full explanations of every variable, and even individual attacks during battle will show how much damage you’ll do before you strike. On one hand, this is a stat fiend’s wet dream, but on the other, it can make the whole thing feel about as rote as its environments. There are no real surprises, nothing to raise an eyebrow. But the result is a game that’s going to appeal to a specific subset of gamers who will likely pour hundreds of hours into it, wanting to see every possible permutation of a team, every available skill, every dropped loot item. There is what feels like a bottomless well of potential, and if that’s the sort of thing that interests you, this is an instant and vociferous recommendation. To say that Pokémon is popular is about as big of an understatement as you could make. Everyone loves the franchise so dang much that they’re willing to overlook the fact that the entire concept – which of course involves capturing adorable monsters, shoving them into magic balls, and then forcing them all to fight to the death – is a tad insane. There’s plenty of knock-offs that have tried to cash in on Pokémon’s success, but only a few titles about catching 0ff-brand pocket-monsters have been made with genuine care and passion. Temtem and Ooblets are recent examples, and you can now add Monster Sanctuary to the list as well. Monster Sanctuary is about a land where monsters can roam freely. You play as a Monster Keeper who’s come from a distinguished family. You, along with three others have been gifted with ancestral Spectral Familiars, which are very powerful, immortal creatures (or this game’s version of your starter Pokémon).

Collect, Evolve and Battle!

You start on your adventure to become a world-renowned Keeper, but soon stumble across a group of evil cultists called The Alchemists that practice forbidden forms of science. Since you’re the protagonist, it’s up to you to stop these guys before some nebulous cataclysmic event unfolds. If you like SNES-era JRPGs, then you’ll likely be charmed by Monster Sanctuary’s art style. The game is a 2D adventure with graphics that are reminiscent of classic Square Enix games like Secret Of Mana or Chrono Trigger. The NPCs and levels themselves aren’t all that exciting, but a lot of the monster designs are delightful to look at. The soundtrack is full of genuinely fantastic music that’s sure to invoke feelings of nostalgia in fellow 90s JRPG fans. Even the story of Monster Sanctuary feels more like something from a SNES-era JRPG rather than a Pokémon game. Unfortunately, it’s less Final Fantasy VI and more Final Fantasy I in the narrative department. The main plot is pretty basic and it even devolves into the classic “collect a number of items to save the world” RPG trope. Most of the dialogue is more functional than anything else. The NPCs are just there to either give you a side quest, spout off exposition, or rattle off gameplay tips like living, breathing tutorials. You then hatch the egg, give the creature a ridiculous name, and upgrade its skills. So, yes, instead of catching your monsters in a small ball, you’re beating up their parents and snatching their eggs. Which somehow seems even darker. The skill trees for each monster actually go pretty deep. They can learn different moves, have one of their physical traits increased, or have special effects and conditions enabled that can change how you use their skillset. You can make it so critical hits apply a buff to a monster, any kind of healing ability also adds a shield, enemies who attack your team get damage reflected back at them, etc. Much like Pokémon, the battles are all about exploiting elemental weaknesses. You can carry a whole bunch of monsters, but you always have a team of six that you take into battle. Where Monster Sanctuary deviates from the normal Pokémon formula is that most of the fights are three-on-three encounters. You’ll see the monsters frolicking around the world, and upon bumping into one the fight begins. Choose the three that you think will be best to take on the opposing team and let the fight commence. There are also your standard Monster Keeper – aka Pokémon Trainer -battles, as well as boss-like Champion monsters you can face. There’s even an online mode if you want to try your luck against other players. Monster Sanctuary starts off with a quick summary on the world and how humans and monsters live together.

Battle it out in Strategic Combat!

Which is mostly not in harmony. Unless one is a Monster Keeper, as they put it, the world outside of the sanctuary is dangerous as wild beasts will attack. This isn’t a problem for your character, who is not only a Monster Keeper, but also one of four families who have a spectral familiar passed on for generations. Here is where you select your starting monster out of 4 options, which vary both in appearance and nature. Most of Monster Sanctuary’s plot is fairly simple and not much to write home about. While the world has been peaceful, the appearance of more champion monsters leads to people wondering if strange things are going on. It’s up to you to uncover the mystery where you end up taking on an evil group who are pretty much just pure evil. You’ll also be joined with 3 other characters who represent the other 3 families you didn’t choose at the start of the game. They’re not particularly deep, but fairly likeable enough in their own right. You also don’t interact with them all that often either, so you don’t really form much a connection throughout the story. But what makes Monster Sanctuary really stand out is the gameplay and exploration. The story doesn’t limit you to any one path, and you’re mostly free to explore at your own pace. There are times where you’ll encounter an obstacle where you’ll either need to find a key or certain monster to progress. But it’s never frustrating, and it is actually quite satisfying once the pieces start falling together. Unlike most metroidvanias, the majority of abilities needed to overcome certain obstacles come in the form of the monsters you collect as a result of your many battles. These monsters have abilities like flying across gaps or breaking hidden walls to reveal treasures. This means every new monster you encounter gives potential new areas you may be able to return to. But these monsters aren’t just for exploring the game’s vast world. Just like the many monster tamer games before, most of the game will be spent in combat with your monsters fighting against various foes, ranging from the wild ones that roam the field or even other monster keepers. Delve deep into the Metroidvania inspired world of Monster Sanctuary, explore the expansive lands and call upon your monsters to lend their aid in and out of combat!
