A Veteran’s Perspective After 100% Completion As someone who grew up playing this game when it first launched on both the Dreamcast and PS1, I know it inside and out. With that perspective, I have to say, calling this release a “remaster” feels like a stretch. At its core, this is essentially the same game we’ve been playing for years with minimal additions. Yes, you can now play as more villain characters, and there’s the option to switch lightsaber colors for some of the main characters. While that’s a nice touch, I found it a bit misleading. I initially thought we’d have full control over customizing lightsaber colors for all characters, which isn’t the case.

What we have here is a straightforward port of the Sega Dreamcast version with a few minor enhancements. Is it the definitive way to play the game? Honestly, it depends. For seasoned veterans like myself, it’s a toss-up. There’s nothing new or groundbreaking here, and the exclusion of the PS1 version feels like a missed opportunity. The PS1 version brought its own unique flavor, with features like interactive and destructible environments, more faithful visuals that better captured the essence of the movie, and tougher, more engaging boss fights. In comparison, the Dreamcast version, and by extension, this port, feels easier and safer. It even lacks some of the dialogue that should be present in key scenes. In my opinion, the PS1 version remains the definitive experience because it feels like the developers poured more effort into it. The Dreamcast version, and this port, come across as less ambitious by comparison.

For newcomers to the game, this release is still enjoyable and perfectly serviceable. You won’t feel like you’re missing anything if you haven’t played the originals. However, the absence of online multiplayer is an odd oversight, especially in today’s gaming landscape. Don’t get me wrong, the game is still solid, just as it always was. But slapping the “remaster” label on it is misleading. This isn’t on par with the Tomb Raider 1, 2, 3 or 4, 5, 6 remasters, where you feel the love and effort that went into modernizing the classics. In the end, this port is a good way to revisit a beloved title, but if you’re expecting a true remaster with meaningful upgrades, you’ll be disappointed. Also… this had to be one of the easiest games I’ve played to get all achievements for. FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH
