As far as shooters go, its unique movement mechanics stand out and make each match exciting. And while the logistics of its multiplayer aren’t perfect, Splatoon 2 is a vibrant and exuberant sequel with enough fresh additions and changes to set it apart from the original. Like the first game, Splatoon 2 stars human-squid hybrids called Inklings. Their world is bright and filled with nautical puns both spoken and implied, and even just walking around and picking out new clothes is delightful. Unlike in the first game, where you could only use the standard Splattershot gun in the campaign, Splatoon 2’s serves as a fantastic introduction to all the basic weapon types you’ll have access to–and it’s much more robust, with collectibles that require a sharp eye to find and creative platforming challenges that really showcase how unique Splatoon 2’s movement is for the shooter genre. And while it starts out a bit basic, each level builds on the last and requires clever application of your knowledge to complete. Grinding on rails while shooting targets, then switching to your squid form and successfully landing a tricky jump is satisfying not just because it’s fun and cool but because it really feels like you’ve mastered Splatoon 2’s new mechanics. Unfortunately, not all of the single player campaign’s lessons make it into the multiplayer. Most notably, rail grinding, which is the standout from single player, isn’t possible on Moray Towers’ rails. That in particular feels like a missed opportunity, especially since that map is returning from the first game. However, getting to use a wide variety of weapons in single player makes the transition to multiplayer easier, and subtle tweaks to weapons and gear, like faster movement with the roller, add a layer of new strategy for veteran players. On top of that, the majority of the maps are new, and favorites include Inkblot Art Academy and The Reef, both of which have several vertical levels that result in intense struggles for control of the higher ground.

The only multiplayer mode for non-ranked matches is Turf War, which is consistently so much fun that only having one casual mode isn’t really a problem. Covering the most ground with your ink is a simple enough concept, but skillful movement, well-timed inking, and the right strategy for your weapon all work together to give each match more depth. There are some wrinkles with the logistics of these regular battles: there’s no way to change your weapon once you’re in a lobby, so you’re stuck with whatever team composition you get, and you can’t guarantee you’ll be on the same team as any friends who join your lobby. But, as the most laid-back of the multiplayer options, Turf Wars’ quick games and random team assignments make it easy to jump in and out and have fun without too much pressure. It might be frustrating when your team of randoms doesn’t seem to know what they’re doing, but the fast-paced struggle to cover turf with your team’s ink is as exhilarating as ever. Ranked battles return with Tower Control, Rainmaker, and Splat Zones. Each mode is similar to game types you might be familiar with in other team shooters; Tower Control consists of escorting a tower to a goal, Rainmaker is like reverse capture the flag, and Splat Zones requires you to “control” specific areas for a certain amount of time by covering them with your team’s ink. But based on our experience with the first game, we can expect these modes to work essentially the same way. Splatoon’s ink mechanics make these modes feel different from other games, and the focus on specific objectives is great for competitive players who want something more than the informal structure of Turf War. It feels as if the paint had just begun to dry on Splatoon after its release on the Wii U in 2015 when Nintendo applied a fresh coat and relaunched it with Splatoon 2 on the Switch. That may be why this sequel feels less like a whole new game than a new version of the first one that rolls up the best post-launch updates to the colorful and adorably non-violent team-based shooter and adds some new toys. Of course, considering the first game is a lot of fun, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, especially if you missed it for lack of a Wii U. And despite some questionable choices that can leave you trapped in matchmaking purgatory, the addition of a standout and clever take on a co-op horde mode provides some seriously addicting fun that has me coming back for more. Like its predecessor, Splatoon 2‘s emphasis on using vibrant, ink-based weapons to splatter both enemies and the ground alike in your team color to control territory makes it a distinctive kind of visually rewarding fun. Controlling the ground is more than just a way of keeping score, though – you’re far more mobile in your own territory, creating lots of opportunity for strategies around creating a highway to an objective and cutting off your opponents.

The key to victory on the eight distinct and symmetrical maps currently in rotation often lies in being aware of terrain, ink management, and the opposition’s plans. Between the original arsenal, the guns added in post-launch updates, and the new ones introduced in Splatoon 2, there’s plenty of ink-based weaponry to choose from, and yet each type has distinct uses. There’s the fast and furious Inkbrush that covers ground quickly, contrasted with the Slosher that manages to turn a literal bucket of ink into a deadly close-range weapon. One of my favorites of the new batch is the Dualies, dual-pistol style weapons that have a great rate of fire and also let you quickly dodge-roll when firing to strafe enemies and release a concentrated burst of ink. There’s also a brand-new array of special weapon powerups, many of which work well with proper coordination to break stalemates. The protective Ink Armor shields your entire team from harm, while the Tenta Missiles can lock onto and fire a salvo of ink strikes on multiple enemies. These range from practical effects, like increasing ink recovery rates, to highly specialized abilities that can track the enemy who last splatted you or players you’ve recently hit. Obtaining new gear is a smoother process than in the first game, too – you can now order any gear you’ve seen on other people in-game using currency earned from battle, though the abilities attached to yours might not be the same due to random generation. Paying to scrub unwanted extra traits to make room for new ones leaves chunks of those abilities behind to apply to other gear, letting you mix and match from your inventory, or you can try your luck at unlocking different bonuses to replace the old ones that better align with your playstyle. This is a good way get value out of gear you earned but don’t plan to wear: by scrubbing enough ammo-conserving bonuses from gear I wasn’t using, I was then able to apply that trait to my favorite jersey (for a hefty price). Offering the chance to craft the perfect gear for your playstyle to give you a better edge in the more competitive Ranked Battles has kept me more invested than I was in the first Splatoon. There wasn’t an awful lot wrong with the original Splatoon, and if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But the fact that this has been pitched as a sequel means there can be a feeling of being left short-changed. Had this been a ‘Splatoon Ultimate Ink-dition’, then it’d get the same treatment as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

It isn’t until you dive into the game’s modes that you realise there’s more than meets the eye. However, some of the mechanics which carry over from the Wii U feel at odds with the Switch’s convenience as a console. For example, the game forces you to watch news bulletins from Pearl and Marina (two Inkling DJs), telling you which stages are in rotation every single time you start the game. Another is being unable to jump out of a matchmaking lobby once it starts, so if it seems to be taking a while to find a match, your only option is to quit Splatoon 2 entirely and reload it, meaning you’re forced to sit through Marina and Pearl’s diatribe once again. Also, stage rotation now occurs more frequently in online play, up to every two hours from four. But if you’re in a matchmaking lobby during the switch, be prepared to be booted and have to start finding a game from scratch. Considering the Switch’s hook as a console that can be played whenever you have a spare moment, having to drudge through menus and be forced to sit in lobbies is incredibly annoying. I don’t care which maps are in rotation if the game starves me of what little time I have to play them. There’s no getting around the fact that Splatoon 2 still remains an excellent shooter, especially for fans who no longer have time to compete with the 12-year-old Call of Duty fanatics of this world.

Splatoon 2 brings back a very familiar and simple 32-mission single-player campaign that, with some exceptions, follows the style of its predecessor almost to the letter. There’s a fair amount of hand-holding and will only take six or so hours to run through and find most collectibles, but missions provide some pretty fun ideas to play around with. There are places to stylishly grind on ink-rails like a squid version of Tony Hawk, and elsewhere you can lure giant, ink-vacuuming Squee-G robots into your enemies’ path. Spraying ink to activate expanding sponges or moving platforms gives it a light Super Mario Sunshine feel, but it rarely challenges you the way co-op and multiplayer do. The most significant improvement over Splatoon is that the sequel’s campaign lets you try out each of the weapon types, which is a great way to learn about their potential and how they can be used in multiplayer before jumping online. This focus on weapon research greatly extends replay value, as you can head back into levels you’ve already conquered to discover new challenges based on the weapons’ strengths and limitations. The new single-player mode is a great addition, fitting somewhere between an extensive tutorial and a delightful experience in its own right, with some truly superb level design. Set two years after Splatoon’s Hero Mode, the game has players rescuing Zapfishes once again, but also saving Callie, one half of the Squid Sisters pop group.

Split into five main areas, each with multiple levels and a boss, I didn’t expect it to be as fun as it was. The bosses in particular are some of the most creative and entertaining I’ve experienced in a shooter. Each level has its own unique hook which keeps the entire campaign interesting. From running across moving platforms to hitting switches, to shooting sponges to soak up your ink and rapidly expand in size, allowing you to reach new areas. There are also two collectibles hidden in every level, one of which can be spent upgrading weapons and grenades while the other provides lore-expanding pages. They are a bit throwaway – the weapons are pretty capable in story mode even at base level, and the lore of Splatoon isn’t exactly The Lord of the Rings – but I enjoyed taking the time in each level to dig around for them regardless. Plus the story mode presents the perfect opportunity to experiment with Splatoon 2’s new arsenal, which is a real highlight. As well as the weapons from its predecessor, we now have a bunch of excellent new toys that get really creative with different ways to paint the town in ink. First are the Splat Duelies – my personal favourite – which are dual-wielded pistols that also allow the player to dodge with the jump button, before popping back up and rapid firing an unprepared enemy with one of the guns. There’s also an umbrella, which initially shoots out a blast of ink like a shotgun, but holding down ZR will open up the brolly to be used as a shield.
