In fact, four Spider-Men are back for Shattered Dimensions, a game that celebrates the wallcrawler’s various incarnations. These four Spider-Men inhabit different worlds with different gameplay styles and unexpected variations on well-known villains. If you think you’ve seen it all with Spider-Man games, think again. Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions has some incredible Spider-Man moments, but plenty of familiar issues that prevent it from being the Arkham Asylum of the Spider-Man universe. Fortunately, each dimension has its own version of Spider-Man. There’s the Amazing Spider-Man, Ultimate Spider-Man, Noir Spidey and Spider-Man 2099. Each has unique abilities, a different visual style, and even different voice actors pulled from Spidey’s long television history (including Dan Gilvezan of Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends fame). What’s cool about Shattered Dimensions is that each world can bring drastic changes to familiar foes. The Noir Green Goblin is a circus freak, 2099’s Doctor Octopus is a chick, Ultimate Electro is living electricity sans lame green and yellow costume. The intros for each boss, which come at the start of the level, are handled brilliantly. There’s a sense of drama in Shattered Dimensions that has been missing from Spidey games for years. But that drama is all in the way the villains are presented (along with some truly epic boss battles). The story itself is weak. I mean, Spider-Man goes from level to level chasing and then beating a boss to collect a piece of the tablet… that is the plot. Spoilers. The story has no pull to it, but here are plenty of good things that kept me playing, even as the plot fell completely flat. Each level has 15 challenges to tackle and those challenges unlock upgrades to your character and a slew of cool bonus costumes. Who wouldn’t want to play as Bag-Man Spidey of Fantastic Four fame or the Scarlet Spider? The challenges are sensibly constructed and pretty much always stuff that doesn’t force you to break from the main game.

Dynamic Gameplay.

You might disarm five mercenaries instead of smacking them with your fists to win a challenge, earn some Spidey points to spend on upgrades, and reveal more of the level’s available tasks. These challenges were a big help in keeping the naturally repetitive nature of an action game like this from feeling tedious. The biggest change from recent Spider-Man games is that there’s no giant, open New York City to swing through. Instead, you have well-crafted, linear levels that offer little freedom for exploration but have more flavor than Activision’s usual virtual Manhattan. This is a smart break from the usual formula and probably saved Shattered Dimensions from becoming a big empty world filled with fetch quests. But it also leads to one major problem — too often the levels take place in confined indoors areas, which causes the camera to flip out. Why can’t anyone make a Spider-Man game with a good camera? Some of this can be blame on the nature of a Spidey game — quick pace, lots of swarming enemies — but some of this lies firmly on the shoulders of developer Beenox. That’s just too obvious not to have been fixed before this game hit store shelves. I did mention there’s a lot of fast-paced action. And that’s handled well. Much of the action is stuff we’ve seen before. Spidey kicks, punches, and webslings his way through enemies. But there are some welcome wrinkles, mostly brought on by the four different versions of the Webslinger. Making a superhero game suddenly became a lot more of a challenge last year, thanks to Rocksteady’s excellent Batman: Arkham Asylum. Activities tangential to what these characters are, like flying through rings and grabbing lost balloons for dumb kids, just doesn’t cut it anymore after roaming the terrifying asylum soaked with the lore, action and atmosphere that draws people to the Dark Knight in the first place. Beenox’s Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions echoes Arkham Asylum in both attention to and understanding of its source material, and at times cribs right from its playbook, ending up with one of the more inspired Spidey games in a while thanks to its spotlight on underrepresented spin-off universes. While it unfortunately doesn’t quite reach the same heights as the Bat, it’s a game in which Spider-Man and action fans should find plenty to like.

New Explosive Powers.

How it’s narrated by comic book legend Stan Lee we can’t complain. The nefarious fishbowl-headed Mysterio breaks into a museum at night to steal a mystical tablet, only to be confronted by Spider-Man. The ensuing kerfuffle shatters the tablet and flings the pieces across a dimensional rip; Madame Web steps in and tells Spidey he must retrieve them before his domed adversary can, lest Bad Things happen. The dimensions in question will be familiar to readers of the Spider-Man comics and are diverse enough to pique the interest of lapsed or casual fans. Amazing is the good ol’ blue-and-red-suited “classic” universe that everyone knows and loves, and the Symbiote Suit returns for the Ultimate universe, bringing along a Rage mode for heavier attacks. The real star lenses here, though, are 2099 and Noir. The futuristic Nueva York of 2099 is the most visually interesting, with its vibrant colours and unique reimaginings of baddies, and also includes special free-falling sections as well as a time-slowing mechanic of mixed use. Noir’s dark take on an alternate 1930s New York is the gameplay curveball of the bunch, emphasizing stealth and sneakery over fisticuffs by taking down grunts from the shadows and even including a Last Known Position mechanic similar to Splinter Cell: Conviction. It’s refreshing to see these different takes on Spider-Man in a game, especially considering that Noir and 2099 are probably not popular enough to warrant releases of their own, despite here exhibiting the strength to do so. Spidey generally took a turn for the open-world since the excellent Spider-Man 2 movie game, but Shattered Dimensions scales it back to the pre-Maguire days, when Neversoft ran the web-head’s adventures. In exchange for the free-roam mess around, Shattered Dimensions brings linear, focused stages themed after members of Spidey’s rogue gallery. Sandman’s stage, for example, takes place in the classic Amazing universe and is set in a mining area out in the desert. 2099‘s Hobgoblin is an explosive, partially aerial encounter set on the rooftops of Nueva York. Their presence is felt everywhere; instead of slogging through a bunch of bad guys to find the room where the villain is hanging out and waiting to stab you, each stage feels like one prolonged battle, with plenty of humorous banter between Spider-Men and foes throughout. Noir maintains these aspects to a degree, but stages mostly retain the same warehouse/ alley setup. All of this diversity is welcome, but after awhile you can’t escape the feeling that you’re just going through the same motions in each stage.

Fight With Demons.

While some do buck the trend a bit, like Ultimate Deadpool’s bizarre TV show set, there’s a definite pattern to everything: fight/sneak up on some guys, rescue civilians, midstage boss fight, more fighting/sneaking, more civilians, end boss fight. Coupled with the very similar feel shared by three of the four dimensions, the game doesn’t quite reach the variety for which it sets out. Despite the lower horsepower, Shattered Dimensions on Wii is still quite attractive, aided no doubt by the comic book art styles. Everything is fast and fluid with a lot happening onscreen, and smaller touches like the pulsing on the 2099 suit are still present in this version. There’s also plenty to unlock thanks to a robust character and ability upgrade system, bolstered by the 180 linked mini-achievements in the sprawling Web of Destiny. The added motion controls are minor and mostly work, apart from one particularly obnoxious way of choosing between strong and weak attacks. With the B trigger as the attack button, tilting up or down toggles the quicker weak attacks and stronger, slower ones. No More Heroes did this as well, but unlike Travis Touchdown, Spider-Man doesn’t provide a visual clue as to how you’re holding the Remote.

Depending on how you naturally hold the controller during play, you might run into the issue of executing the wrong attack unless you stay annoyingly aware. Beenox does an amazing job of creating four distinct dimensions for the game’s four playable Spider-Men — Amazing, Ultimate, the Noir, and the futuristic 2099. Each has its own unique look, giving you a completely fresh take on old Web Head in each world. Amazing and Ultimate are similar, with their hand-drawn comic book look, hard lines, and bright colors, yet each has its distinct visual touches that set them apart. 2099, which takes place far in the future (hence the 2099), depicts a New York City that’s been overtaken by technology, with bafflingly large skyscrapers and flying cars. The Noir world may be the most striking, with its monochrome palette and heavy use of shadow and light. The Spider-Men each have their own gameplay gimmicks to set them apart from one another, as well. Noir plays to the game’s use of dark and light, creating a more stealth-based experience that will have you sneaking up on thugs and quietly ensnaring them in your webs. 2099 can enable a sort of “bullet time,” and Beenox uses the city’s immense skyscrapers and verticality as an opportunity for fast-paced diving and chase sequences.

Amazing and Ultimate, like their looks, are similar with one caveat — Ultimate’s symbiote costume allows him to enter a “rage” mode, sprouting black tentacles and such for crazy damage and combos. While Batman and the X-Men have had some standout entries, their overall histories with video games are checkered at best. And don’t get a blogger started on Superman. Spider-Man has been the lucky one. Even on Peter Parker’s worst day his games are typically playable, and on his best day his games grow to become the finest titles for that particular console. Spider-Man 2 remains a classic from the last gen, and it was a title that forever changed the way Spider-Man games would be designed. Gone were the sinister gauntlets and ‘longest-day’ structure, and in rushed the open world super-sandbox which let players swing around and address crime sprees at their leisure. But this didn’t last forever, and by Web of Shadows players found themselves growing weary of both open worlds (which every other game seems to have anyways) and the awkward new clauses they have attempted to wedge in. Beenox, the crew behind Shattered Dimensions, probably saw themselves walking into this hostile environment, and their strategy became to take two steps forward by taking one back. Ion Fury
