Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition Free Download GAMESPACK.NET Many open-world, non-linear drive-and-gun games — with some notable exclusions — tend to tack on a story merely to loosely justify whatever it is you’re doing. But the main thing I made clear in my original review of Sleeping Dogs on Xbox 360 and PS3 back in 2012 is that while it’s a blast to play, its story is actually the star of the show. The Definitive Edition for new-gen consoles carries over both of those great traits and adds a decent facelift, and it’s just as fun and just as memorable as it was the first time around. An engaging plot littered with memorable characters and a ton of slowly building tension is artfully coupled with solid melee action, gunplay, and driving to create a multi-faceted game that satisfies on all fronts. As far as the aesthetic is concerned, Sleeping Dogs was never an exceptionally pretty game, but The Definitive Edition resolves some of its biggest visual faults and brings it more in line with the PC version. On the Xbox One version I played, draw distances are vastly extended, textures are much sharper, and the overall gloss of the entire convincing recreation of Hong Kong is improved. It doesn’t look like a native new-gen game by any stretch of the imagination, however – and it’s disappointing that the framerate stutters a bit when you’re on foot running around and exploring, and the camera is still a bit messy in certain circumstances. Again, though, I have to sing the praises of the story. Sleeping Dogs revolves around an undercover Hong Kong detective named Wei Shen. Shen – who’s voiced wonderfully by Will Yun Lee in both English and Cantonese, is an interesting protagonist, one with true depth. Shen’s embedded himself with the Hong Kong underworld in order to unravel it from within, and watching him get sucked further and further into peril is fascinating. He’s not a nameless hero or a loosely constructed anyman. He seems as real as a character in a movie. Of course, Sleeping Dogs has plenty for you if story isn’t your thing. Its driving mechanics are on-point, with lots of different vehicles toting unique feels, from run-down motorcycles and hulking industrial trucks to supped-up sedans and expensive sports cars, and everything in between. Developer United Front Games has crafted a believable and incredibly busy version of Hong Kong that’s simply a blast to drive around, explore, and uncover.

A mature, gritty undercover cop drama where a wrong decision can blow your cover at any time.

Likewise, fighting — whether with your fists, a melee weapon, or a firearm — is also a lot of fun. There’s a ton of collectibles to discover in addition to its meaty campaign, with tons of offshoot side quests to complete. In short, Sleeping Dogs is bound to keep you very busy not only when keeping up with its story, but in simply doing everything within it there is to do. Sleeping Dogs is an open-world crime game for busy people. It’s not an experience padded with multiple cities or the obligatory “slow living” town at the outskirts of the world map. Compared to recent game versions of Los Angeles in Grand Theft Auto V and Chicago in Watch Dogs, the dense depiction of Sleeping Dogs’ Hong Kong lends itself well to all-business efficiency, where it doesn’t take long to get anything done, whether it’s a story mission or a stress-relieving brawl that you pursue. As one of the better open world games of the last two years, this rerelease is not unexpected. Yet, as the second of Square Enix’s “Definitive Editions,” this enhanced version of Sleeping Dogs does not exhibit the same level of care as this year’s Tomb Raider re-release. United Front Games’ vision of Hong Kong isn’t the largest urban game world, but like the real city itself, it makes the most of its limited space. It’s a city of countless, well-placed distractions, from street races to gang hideout infiltrations. You might be on your way to start a story mission, only to see an exotic car a client wants drive by. Distractions in Sleeping Dogs work because the game mixes passive diversions with dynamic ones, and just because activities are close to each other doesn’t mean that Hong Kong is a city bereft of challenges. Even if you’re just yards away from a hidden collectable, it might take you 10 minutes to find the one route to reach that treasure. Thanks to the city’s tight design, it’s not unheard of to reach 100 percent completion–and 100 percent satisfaction–in less than 25 hours. With all the post-release content added to the Definitive Edition, you’re looking at an additional five hours. The two downloadable side stories–one involving Chinese horror myths, the other recasting protagonist Wei Shen as a traffic cop–excel by being lighthearted in tone, a fitting contrast to the tension-heavy story of the main game. For as much as Sleeping Dogs excels in its conciseness, much of the narrative pacing feels rushed.

Epic high-speed thrills: Burn up the streets or tear up the sea in a vast array of exotic cars, superbikes and speedboats.

The “rise through the ranks” story conceits in urban open world games have run their course, and Sleeping Dogs would have been a great example of the latter had it not been for the hurried nature of Wei Shen’s promotions as a member of the Hong Kong Triad. Where the filler-free narrative approach works is by not centering the game on Wei’s quest for vengeance. His motivations are never hamfisted: you don’t need to lose a sister to gangs and drugs to sympathize with Wei’s emotional baggage. This material is ripe for a prequel, but Sleeping Dogs aptly focuses your attention on the present, immersing you in Hong Kong’s underworld through Wei’s perspective. The story is a clear homage to decades of crime films featuring undercover protagonists, and explores the common theme of losing oneself to the well-curated undercover persona. You begin to believe Wei’s loyalty to his fellow gangsters and his genuine rage when his “brothers” have been wronged. Yet as convincing as he is, the story never portrays Wei as being truly conflicted, or in danger of losing himself, although a few cutscenes try to convince you otherwise. For over a decade, I’ve longed for a group of games to carry on the brawling legacy of Streets of Rage and Final Fight. We got it from the Batman: Arkham series, Yakuza, and to some extent, Assassin’s Creed. Sleeping Dogs belongs in this camp as well, and strikes a happy balance between the fundamental differences of combat between Batman and Yakuza. In other words, Sleeping Dogs succeeds for having an absorbing counter-intensive battle system while still offering incentives to go on the offense whenever you so choose. Wei Shen’s superhuman ability to fight like he has eyes in the back of his head elevates the game to the level of a martial arts movie. Sleeping Dogs’ responsive controls make it easy to depend on counterattacks, thus making the the game’s melee combat a perfect example of how great defense can be the best offense. You do not want to forget about the Yakuza-inspired, context-sensitive finishing moves, however, which act as impactful rewards for the more assertive player. Whether you want to electrocute a thug on a neon sign or grind a gangster’s face in an outdoor generator, most every combat environment has objects to violently interact with.

Explosive action fuelled by a seamless mix of deadly martial arts, intense gunfights and brutal takedowns.

Contextual possibilities, combined with Wei Shen’s Hong Kong cinema-level martial arts, complement–rather than conflict with–the more realistic elements of Sleeping Dogs. There is no doubt that Sleeping Dogs still stands as one of 2012’s biggest surprises. That the sequel, which would expand the initially completely brilliant (and later mediocre) True Crime series into a trilogy, would reach this high was probably no one’s idea in advance. I have now spent a good week with the definitive version and can say that the promised improvements are good, but not more than that. New releases are hot right now. Instead of seeing the cradle of this generation as an opportunity to launch new, fresh game series, they instead choose to take an already popular game and release it with various DLC packages, polished graphics and finish with an addition to the title. Tomb Raider , The Last of Us , and in just a few weeks Grand Theft Auto V , are all polished versions of already superb games. So it’s no wonder that I, who loved Sleeping Dogs “original”, am curious to see if the game has aged with dignity when I sit down and play Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition for Playstation 4.

It’s been a while since I witnessed the intro sequence where a drug deal goes horribly wrong, leading to Hong Kong’s top brass surrounding the port area and arresting protagonist Wei Shen. He is thrown into an interrogation room where it is revealed that he is actually working undercover and has been tasked with infiltrating the violent and brutal Sun On Yee triad. It doesn’t take long before I’m once again sucked into the story, which also this time keeps me interested from start to finish. It’s a story of corruption, duplicity and duty, but above all of loyalty. Wei is torn between the role of a policeman and the role of the organization he is tasked with breaking. The closer he gets to the top, the more complicated it becomes, causing his superiors on the honest side of the law to question where his true loyalties lie. The battle between evil and good has figured in both books and films since time immemorial, we as both readers and viewers have been able to follow both the evil, the good and the ugly. But on the gaming front, you’ve usually had to wear one type of shoe, usually the villain’s. In Sleeping Dogs , as I said, we get a taste of what it’s like to live on both sides, which right from the start felt very refreshing.

Sure, we’ve had games in the past where we stood on one side of the law and could oscillate between Jesus and the Devil (an example is just the countless role-playing games where you had a reputation to think about), but here it’s really in between. Are you really a police officer? Or gangster? Well, that’s up to each their own to judge after playing through the roughly 20-hour story, delivered not only via densely packed (and skillfully directed) cutscenes, but also with world-class voice acting. To be honest, it’s one of the best I’ve seen in years. Since the scene is China, Square Enix has been smart to mix English with Chinese, which separates the game from the crowd while giving the story much more credibility and empathy. Things that legitimize the game as an independent and solid product do not end there. True to the country’s history, more focus has been placed on fighting rather than weapons and the melee system therefore consists not only of punching and kicking, but also grappling, hitting harder and kicking harder. In a flash, you can go from free running to the mode where you are ready to dish out massive amounts of beating. Victoria 3
