This truly miserable corner of the universe offers you a chance to try your luck at becoming a successful merchant, rich miner, feared mercenary or a famous adventurer. Silent Sector is a space-sim set in a distant future, where space colonization is already well underway. Players impersonate one of the many spacefarers that reached the Amoeba Cluster seeking fame and fortune, due to the discovery of Eldorite, an extremely valuable mineral. War between several factions ensued for the control over the sector’s resources, and the protagonist soon finds himself (or herself) involved in this feud. Each faction in fact has its own roster of unique ships, weapons and accessories which become available only by having a good reputation with them. Each weapon is unique in handling, effect and pattern – while ships may have unique layouts or abilities as well. Accessories often award powerful active or passive skills. On top of that, secret blueprints can also be found and crafted at specialized stations. Oftentimes, siding with one faction will make another one (or multiple) an enemy.

Combat is inspired to top-down shooters and bullet hell games, in fact it’s commonplace to have dozens or even hundreds of bullets flying everywhere. Careful dodging and maneuvering skills are a must to survive battles that often, put players against overwhelming numbers. Special items such as reinforcement calls and nuclear missiles may be awarded for some quests, and become a rare commodity in a fight. A dynamic system of factions at war with each other, random quests and unique events make the Amoeba Cluster a very interesting place to explore. Talking with random NPCs may lead to information that unlocks unique events, while quests are often refreshed and varied. The next unknown signal on the map might really be anything, quite an addictive factor. Each faction has its own unique quest-line, progressed with reputation and often featuring unique tasks, bosses and situations. Unique non-repeating enemies are common in both the main questline and faction ones, the same goes for tasks. Even if marketed as a RPG, the interactions of this type are limited. Sometimes a character skill can be used in a dialogue, for example to persuade an enemy to surrender instead of fighting – but this happens rarely. The character attribute system plays a marginal role at best, while most quests don’t even have choices or branching narrative. There is not much “RPG” in what mostly is a Space Sim instead. Late game balance is quite off. Once a heavy ship and some good hardware are acquired, along with dozens of spent attribute points, the player really becomes too powerful – capable of taking on entire armies alone. This makes the help of allied factions redundant – even against the final boss which in turn becomes an underwhelming fight. The enemies are just not good enough anymore at this stage, no matter the numbers. Character progression simply consists in assigning one skill point per level gained, into one of the attributes, which in turn upgrade weapon damage, maneuverability, defenses or other things – depending each time. Such attributes do not influence what equipment / ships / etc. one can or cannot use, and also do not open up to “builds” or further specializations.

Each location on the global map has a local area which can be explored, however exiting its boundaries will go back into the global one. Specialized equipment can be installed to perform actions like mining, which is by the way one of the most profitable activities. Are divided into Main ones, Faction ones and Random ones. There also are Events that can be discovered on the map, that can be considered “factionless” quests. All quests play out in the same general way: talk to this guy, go there, wait further instructions. Most need a certain reputation level to be unlocked, which is gained by performing other quests for a specific faction or conquering sector in that group’s name. The difficulty of a quest may not always be well represented, as a “Low” danger quest might be harder than a “Very Hard” level one sometimes. I really tried to like this game, as I generally am a sucker for space sims in the vein of starcon, alas… Early game is extremely unnecessarily hard or cheesy (peel off ships one by one and try to dps them down before they dps you down). Of course, you can alternatively look for UFOs (a potential random encounter under the yellow exclamation marks) and grab a few of the blob weapons (pretty decent weapon) and suddenly you roflstomp evertrhing till what I guess is mid-late game?

More guns, missiles, lasers and upgrades than you can shake a cow at.

Some mechanics like destructible parts on several later ships make no sense – why do bigger ships suddenly have modules that earlier ships do not? Why are the modules destructible through shields when shields are supposed to protect your ship? Combat is also, unfortunately terrible, although it’s supposed to be the bread and butter of the game. Ships move at insane speeds, so aiming becomes more of a spray and pray type of play. Direction, heading, sped – all mean little, as any semblance of physics has decided to skip this game. The result is blobs moving in random directions and shooting at such as well. Ah, btw, later game pirates with their super hooks means instant death randomly – have fun! Overall – lack of balance, extremely arcadey and, frankly, silly design decisions means it’s a strong don’t buy recommendation from me. no game crashing bugs encountered – that’s a plus. Several random bugs of events not loading encountered – that’s less of a plus. Silent Sector is a fun new space arcade shooter, set in a distant future full of uncertainty and chaos. This is the time when dark corners of the universe are being run with primitive trading and merchant dealings and ruled by unpleasant forces of chaos.

Silent Sector is bringing back some classic old-school space-shooter vibes with it’s fun gameplay and classic Arcady art style. While traveling the far corners of the galaxy alone, our hero has been tasked with bringing in some much-needed cargo. While passing through a particularly chaotic part of the galaxy our hero runs into a space station under distress. The Notorious Admiral Zed has crossed paths with our hero, and he shall not pass! Our hero finds himself outnumbered and outgunned. His ship succumbs to irreparable damage and he has had to abandon ship. He has lost the battle, but not the war! He will be back to repair, rebuilt, to pay back for the cargo, and most importantly, for revenge. Silent Sector’s whole gameplay revolves around a single character that you have created, choosing from a good number of characters. You might think that your whole goal would be based around the faction that you’ve chosen, but that’s not quite the case here. Instead, you will be doing pretty much the same thing with all the factions; taking jobs, destroying targeted ships and objects, delivering items, etc. What intrigued me the most is the game’s gameplays, which turned out to be super smooth and well-polished for the most part.

Your basic controlling scheme uses WASD to navigate throughout the galaxy, using the mouse pointer to correct the ship’s direction. Silent Sector features a decent assortment of combat scenarios; for the most part they play out really well, but I would have appreciated better damage modelling for the whole firing scheme. The Current firing system is good, but tagging a target and shooting them without worrying about leading the shoots would’ve been much better. Weapons assortment; Silent Sector currently featuries a ton of unique weapons to choose from; you can buy them with credits which can either earn or trade items for. And also, there are these tools with which you can equip your ship; two unique tools at any given time. Each has its own unique use. For example, you can equip your ship with mining tools that help you destroy or mining meteors. You get your jobs from stations, clubs, and individuals. I wish the missions were much more defined with a more refined story. But as this is still in early access there’s room to improve. World design: Absolutely loved the classic Arcadey-styled artwork throughout the game. Sectors and areas are defined by a few things, such as the colors, background space debris, natural galactic phenomenon, etc. For the most part they look and feel good, but they could have done a much better job with it.Foreclosed PS5
