RITE Switch NSP Free Download GAMESPACK.NET Precision platformers—such as Slime-San, The End is Nigh, or Celeste—can be tough to pull off given their razor-sharp requirements. Make the game too frustrating, and most players won’t even try to overcome the devilish challenges laid out for them. Make the game too easy, and it’ll lose a lot of its ‘hardcore’ appeal. Pond Games’ Rite is the latest entry in this exacting genre, concerning itself with nothing else than presenting you with 160 difficult platforming courses to attempt to beat. There’s no story, there aren’t many level gimmicks, and yet it remains a thrillingly gripping action game that no fan of the genre will want to miss. What immediately sticks out about Rite is how excellent movement feels, something that can make or break a platformer. Your little priest/creature can go from standing to running full speed almost instantly and you have fine control over their momentum as you jump between walls and narrowly slip between saw blades. We did not run into a single instance where a death felt like it was tied to faulty inputs or strange physics; every button press is responsive and puts your character exactly where you intend to. This is especially important given the tough level designs on offer here. While Rite may feel a little easier than its aforementioned peers in the genre, you’re sure to have to take at least a few attempts per level before you finally understand how to pass the axes, saw blades, and prickly vines that stand in your way. It’s easy to avoid being discouraged, too, given that stages only take about a second to reset every time you die. For those who are confident in their platforming skills, every stage has 20 collectible coins that often require you to take more risks; getting them all unlocks the final set of levels, which predictably give you a run for your money. Getting that far doesn’t take too long, however; most of our clear times for levels sat somewhere in the 20-30-second range. This doesn’t include any failed attempts on a stage, but even factoring that in, there were only a handful of levels that took us longer than five minutes to clear. This is perhaps the weakest element of Rite—you’ll probably have gotten everything you can out of this game after a few days at most.

Challenging level designs, perfectly pitched.

But, we found this short run time to work in Rite’s favor, as levels passed by so quickly that it was nearly impossible to resist trying another. As for presentation, Rite goes with a minimalistic approach that doesn’t feel cheap in its execution. Though environments are a little samey, sprites are sharply drawn and your character stands out well from the background, which also helpfully has a grid-like layout to make it easier to calculate jumps. The action is backed by a relatively low-key soundtrack that mixes synthwave elements, guitars, violins, and light vocalizations to create ambient music that fills space without being distracting or repetitive. Plus, it helps set a calm tone that counteracts the difficulty nicely. There’s something perfect about RITE’s visual aesthetic. The gorgeously detailed pixel art aesthetic that feels right out of the Fez handbook oozes with style. It adds a wonderful sense of bounce to the gameplay, populating your frantic platforming with mouthwatering eye-candy. However, it is never distracting. ABZU

You won’t find yourself scrambling to work out where you’re supposed to go, or deliberating whether or not a platform is a part of the background. In fact, the simplicity of the 2D perspective alongside the easy-to-comprehend layout of each level ensures that your platforming experience is as smooth as possible. This is perfect for the speedrunning nature of RITE, which encourages completing a level as quickly as possible. It takes but a second to figure out where each and every collectable that you’ll need to acquire is, and what the best possible route to get them is. Of course, the most important aspect of a platformer is the platforming, and fortunately in that respect RITE is unequivocally amazing. There’s a wonderful sense of flow to RITE’s fast-paced platforming that feels unrelenting and ceaseless. Its focus on speed ensures that you rarely stop, instead encouraging you to risk dangerous manoeuvres. While that may seem like a criticism as risky moves tend to result in painful deaths, it ensures that the momentum you build while playing never drops.

Tight, responsive controls that feel fantastic.

You will die countless times as each of RITE’s numerous levels are filled to the brim with hazards. However, the developers were clearly conscious of this and have thus altered their game accordingly. Not only is the respawn time lightning fast, but the arenas are small enough that learning the best route through them takes barely any time at all. Suffice to say you’ll rarely spend more than a handful of minutes per level. For all the hardcore platformer achievers in the room who constantly practice on mastering a new (or old) mechanic, Pond Games has brought Rite to test everyone’s skill and patience. Focused more on gameplay than anything else, this simple precision platformer starts quite easy, but don’t be fooled, later in the game even though the mechanics are very straightforward, the difficulty increases remarkably. After being available for PC since July 2020, a port for the Nintendo Switch was finally added. These types of games don’t always need so much innovation, like different new skills or move sets to be highlighted in the market. Mage and Monsters

Having a vast selection of where to choose from when it comes to a platformer game, Rite stands by itself with just its simplicity and smooth controls. Rite is a high-speed precision game with no story behind it, other than you being a little Nim trying to overcome challenges. Each of the 5 areas contains levels, having 160 in total. On every level you have coins and a key to open the exit door to continue to the next level. There’s no tutorial needed other than a picture of the controls at the beginning. Rite has very simple and intuitive gameplay. Even though I characterize this game mostly for its challenge, I mainly absorbed the other aspects it had during the first few levels. In time, as you progress, the challenge appears and it makes you try numerous times before advancing to the next level. Still, the animations of the pixel art environment, moving axes and the character you control are notably smooth and it just sees good to the eye. Focused more on its gameplay, Rite has a great learning curve when it comes to its difficulty progression.

Gameplay.

As you begin the first levels, it is just simple enough to flow through them, feeling good about advancing fast and getting adjusted to the speed-paced movement of your character. You can jump, which if you tap the jump button it slightly jumps shorter, jump from wall to wall and slight down walls when touching them. That’s, of course, not to say that RITE will be over and done with quickly. Each level has a number of coins that you can collect, as well as a timer that’s constantly ticking up. Completing the level quickly is one thing, and can be done by simply collecting a special coin and heading for the exit. However, to truly complete a level you must gather all of the coins and reach the exit. The longevity of RITE, as well as the exhilarating enjoyment it provides, really stems from trying to finish a level in record time all while nabbing each and every coin. RITE is the freshman release from one-man developer Pond Games. Comprised of over 100 bite-sized levels, RITE is a precision platformer in the ilk of Super Meat boy: lightning quick respawns, tight control, and difficult levels, and what the genre needs, RITE delivers.

The controls are very satisfying, with one minor gripe being how many different jump heights are possible (and sometimes necessary). The jump is quick with high hang time but intense acceleration, which gives it a classic SMB feel as opposed to a floatier game like Cave Story. Respawn times are fast, which is good because the game gets super hard super quick, but I sometimes felt like I wanted to get back into the action even faster. By the third world, expect to feel a sigh of relief upon each newly completed level, because some of these are brutal. The music doesn’t restart on death (a necessity for a half-decent precision-platformer). Speaking of music, I am not sure if Pond Games is the composer for the soundtrack, but regardless, it’s a killer soundtrack. Each trial’s theme song is long enough that it does not get repetitive but maintains familiar elements from the last. The art looks beautiful, with simple but incredibly stylized pixel-ish graphics. Seriously, this game looks amazing, and combined with its tight controls makes it one of my favorite pick up and play precision platformers ever. RITE is also made for speedrunning.

The game remembers your best time for each level as well as your best time for each level you 100%, that is, each level you grab the optional 20 coins in. It’s only a matter of time before this game becomes a fan favorite to watch at AGDQ. For the price RITE is definitely worth it, and as a proof of concept for the developer’s artistic, musical, and design talents, it is incredibly promising. That being said, I have a number of wishes for RITE that would turn this first soiree into a household masterpiece. With no story or cutscenes to set tone, the game is exclusively about its gameplay. That’s obviously fine, and the gameplay is generally compelling, but with even the bare minimum SMB  esque exposition, RITE could thrust us into a world that we really feel connected to. The character design is fun, and the story idea is seemingly there (why is this little dude on this trial, is it his rite of passage)? It’s honestly a super untapped narrative concept in precision-platformers, so I wish it was given room to breath. Probably more pivotal, and the reason RITE is a $4.99 game, is variety. The game has five elements that can kill you, and one archetectural type (hollow floor) that change how you move around the stage. Brotato
