And therein lies the main feature of the game: Popup Dungeon is designed to function as a tabletop RPG and as such is not intended to be taken seriously at all. The campaigns that it offers us are nice, funny, sometimes even crazy, and that’s perfect. It emulates the feeling of playing a role-playing session with our friends, allowing us to go off on tangents and come up with any stupid thing on our way. How else do you explain a Medieval Fantasy Warrior Dwarf suddenly finding himself on an asteroid in the middle of space, mining bricks with a laser ? Or a modern Army Sergeant facing a giant shrimp in a restaurant located in the middle of the dungeon? Sometimes it is enough to simply give us the basic structure, the elementary rules, and then let the player find the best way to use the pieces that are offered. Seen in this way, Popup Dungeon already has a different, special appreciation, which justifies its design and manages to make us smile with its board game aesthetics. So far we can talk about a looser and more relaxed role-playing game; but there is another element that makes Popup Dungeon even more special and that turns it into a potential chaos of fun: the game includes a powerful editor that allows the player to design their own abilities, items, characters, enemies and even entire campaigns. In addition to the creative liberties you can take with your characters, enemies, gear, abilities and more, you can also create full-on game modes. Here, you can specify the layout of the world you’d like your party to explore and manually place levels, story encounters, challenges, and more. You can add ambient sound or music to any part of the map you desire, and modify the conditions for different challenges or dialogues. It’s beyond impressive the amount of freedom players are given, though it can be a little tough to navigate at first.

The game has a unique pop-up book art style, with paper-cut characters and environments that give the game a charming and whimsical feel.

Combat is resolved on grid-based dungeons, using a system of initiative and action points. Those action points can be spent on either movement or character abilities. Abilities are represented as cards, but there’s no real deck-building elements here. Direct damage, healing, buffs, debuffs, and status effects all operate on a turn timer, and the more powerful abilities have cooldown. It’s a diverse system that doesn’t skimp on synergy, but it never feels particularly exciting either. The animation is great, and leans into the papercraft stylings with small details, like the way slain creatures go up in flames like a scorched Rizla. The game enjoys its own animation a bit too much, though, which slows things down considerably. This, and trading turn-based blows here feels almost entirely devoid of consequence. You win, you move on to the next slow, simple fight. You lose, you do the same slow, simple fight again. It’s just all a bit, well, papery. As in frictionless and weightless. The character selection really is something, though. You can have up to five characters in a party (it recommends three and difficulty scales accordingly) and there’s currently a few dozen in the game, plus dozens more on the Steam Workshop. Good times were had. And again, once that meme has died in about fourteen seconds time, the game is easily set up to let players make others. I assume this is less a case of Popup Dungeon trying to be hilarious, and more showing players the sort of things that are available to create and download. The deliberately immersion-breaking roster does its job here. As far as the breadth of content goes, I can’t fault it. There’s a roguelite tower mode, some self-admitted endless grind modes, and some pre-written stories (which are genuinely enjoyable). There’s already a bunch of extra stuff on the Steam Workshop, including homages to Pokemon Blue and Red, of which I’ve taken screenshots in the hope of preserving them after the 48 hours it takes Nintendo to have them wiped from the surface of Valve’s servers. Alongside these are the actual creation tools, which are legible, well-designed menus with various tweakable parameters. I couldn’t find any tutorials in-game, but there are some great ones on the developer’s YouTube channel. All in, there’s a lot here. I’m going to score this one more or less down the middle, and this is more a signifier of what I see as a game that could go either way, rather than a game of average quality. Popup Dungeon absolutely stands out, if only for its ambition, and if it attracts a dedicated, creative community, then the tools are here for some really nifty stuff to emerge. This is a problem in itself, of course.

I’ve personally criticised Media Molecule’s Dreams for its reliance on the free time of players to add to its own value, so it would be unfair of me not to do the same here. I don’t feel it should be on a community of players to make a game a worthwhile buy for its audience, or profitable for its creators. I’d love to see some more dedicated developer content, because whoever’s doing the art and writing on that team has come up with some really endearing and sometimes genuinely funny writing. It’s not a bad game, by any means, but it’s currently a pile of bones waiting for a few dozen talented necromancers to really make the most of it. I’ll add a ‘but’ here, because I’m a jaded tactics veteran, and your kids or young siblings probably aren’t. Though I don’t think the combat holds much for someone that plays a lot of tactics games, it’s simple and attractive enough that it could well really resonate with a younger audience. The characters mostly cover sci-fi and fantasy archetypes. The game does venture into memes or jokes with some of them, including allowing characters to play dogs or cats, an internet troll, or a robot DJ. Each character does very different things, and finding a group that works together, or finding a way for your thematically tied group to succeed is an interesting challenge. Each character has varying levels of a wide range of stats, a set of core abilities, and various equipment that impacts both these abilities and their stats. Most stats affect how much damage you do with various types of abilities, but other stats impact how much damage you can take or will take, how fast you are, and how likely it is that enemy status conditions will affect you. Monsters are similarly varied and are built on much the same system as the characters though without the specific gear-based customizations that player characters feature. Thematically they represent a variety of science fiction and fantasy archetypes and tropes, though many of them are clearly meant to be either a meme or a joke. Examples include a half-centaur (clearly a person), the t’owl, and Space Lincoln.

The creation modes do not display tutorials, making certain elements a bit more confusing than others. There is a glossary that explains different terms from the gameplay and interface, which can be helpful if you’re seeing a word or symbol you haven’t figured out the meaning of yet. Certain text can be hovered over to reveal an explanation in the creation menus, however, some fields go completely unexplained. Specifically, the projectile editor was the toughest to figure out, since almost none of the fields could be hovered over, and certain tweaks were indistinct in how they affected the overall result. Still, none of it is overwhelmingly complicated. Rather, the amount of content available to choose from is the overwhelming part. The game itself already comes with thousands of templates and presets, not to mention the thousands more you can find in the Steam Workshop. Do you want to dress up your characters like Geralt of Rivia or the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? If you can dream it, chances are, you can probably do it.
