There’s plenty to do, but you’re not told who anyone is or what anything does. You can hire new staff, search for better contracts, and research better technology for your bike. All pretty standard fare, but nothing’s explained at all. Even the calendar is confusing to start with; seemingly pointless empty weeks fly by as you’re left with nothing to do between races. Players well versed in MotoGP will likely get along fine, but newcomers will absolutely struggle. Things don’t get much easier during events, either. Grand Prix weekends are complicated with multiple practice periods, qualifying stages, and engineering tests to perform before the main event. You can opt in or out of all these — you can cut straight to race day if you don’t want the build up — but again, nothing is adequately explained to you. Milestone assumes you already know what you need to know, and the result is a game that, to start with, is extremely unfriendly. All that being said, the game has it where it counts; it’s far and away at its best out on the track. Whether you’re competing in MotoGP, Moto2, or Moto3, there’s a complex and impressive simulation going on, and this year that extends right down to fuel management and the wear and tear on different sections of your bike’s tyres. The racing itself, much like the overall game, is straight-faced and unapologetic.

Even with many assists enabled, the handling is weighty and realistic, and there’s little room for error, especially with the AI as challenging as it is. Like other sims, controls are delicate, with a need to constantly manage throttle and steering to keep yourself on the tarmac. You’ll come to rely on the generous rewind feature until the controls click. It takes some getting used to, but it’s ultimately very satisfying as your skills progress through each season. Outside of the career is a Historic mode, allowing you to take control of numerous famous riders in a series of challenges that refresh each day. Winning these special races earns you an in-game currency, which can then be used to unlock more riders and teams. Fans of the sport will certainly enjoy collecting everything. In contrast, all this year’s teams, drivers, and circuits are available in the Quick Modes, where you can set up your own Grand Prix weekends, time trials, or even full championships. There’s plenty to be getting on with, and that’s without factoring in the serviceable online multiplayer. Visually, the game is a bit hit and miss. The vehicles and their riders can look great out on the track, and it’s possible to snap some lovely images in photo mode. There are a lot of sketchy details to be found throughout. You’ll hardly notice in the heat of the action, but in the pits, the graphics are, well, the pits. It at least runs at a rock solid frame rate — an optional 60 if you’re on PS4 Pro or 30 otherwise. Performance is good, then, but be prepared for copious and sometimes lengthy load screens. I’ve played many racing games, but MotoGP 20 is a new kind of challenge that I wholeheartedly embrace. The high-speed, demanding bikes require a slightly different approach from the traditional race car techniques I’m accustomed to, breeding an internal competition for understanding and mastery that leads to a heightened tension on the track. This creates an appreciation for the bikes – their power and handling – that is a welcome change from getting behind the wheel of just another race car. The need to make your rider lean into the corner to turn the bike and fight centrifugal force – with two wheels underneath you – is an added dimension that makes cornering feel different than in a car. Fine tuning your line through the corners is harder because even slight aberrations in your speed or lean can easily change your arc and cause you to lose speed. Just winging it or finessing the corner is more costly than in a normal racer.

The satisfaction for a smoothly taken corner – or succession of corners – is truly its own kind of reward. And when it didn’t go well for me, I was thankful for the rewind feature that lets players correct their mistakes. It may sound like just more to layer on, but I suggest you choose the option to split the control of the front and back brakes to separate buttons. The back brakes don’t have as much proportional power as those on the front, but they offer some extra control in the middle of a turn. Similarly, changing the amount of fuel you carry, and thus the weight of your bike, can have a big effect on your lap times. While running out of gas during a race is a nightmare scenario, using less gas in practice sessions is a good way to hit crucial R&D objectives in the career mode. In the career mode (which features tiers of different-caliber bikes), you hire an agent to broker an amenable contract and technical directors to work with your staff to unlock and create bike upgrades. It’s straightforward off the track, but on the track during practice sessions is where it gets more interesting. In order to complete development tests to earn points for R&D, you have to hit specific lap times. The latter is a great tool to customize the bike’s settings to how you race and what kind of feedback the bike is giving you. The track engineer asks you questions around specific gameplay elements, such as how the bike is handling in the middle of a corner, to give you the feel you’re looking for. It’s a simple way to modify the bike without asking you to actually grab a wrench and start tweaking things you might not understand. Making these tweaks and fixing any damage you incur during practice all take up valuable practice time – another aspect that adds stakes to the sometimes-boring race weekend format. With over 25 years of experience in the racing game development scene, it’s safe to say Italian studio Milestone has cemented its place as one of its most prevalent developers. Outside of the official F1 and WRC games, it’s established a foothold in almost every facet of modern motorsport and while double-A budgets haven’t always produced the slickest of end products, it’s gradually built a portfolio of solid racing simulators. MotoGP 20 is the latest addition to that portfolio, continuing Milestone’s commitment to Nintendo Switch as a platform, and showcasing just how far its recreation of motorcycle racing’s premier league has come.

And with the sporting world effectively on hold at the moment, simulators have become even more essential. Thankfully, Milestone has been working hard with some much-needed changes to the core mechanics of bike performance. The introduction of a new asymmetric tyre wear model recreates an authentic deterioration of your tyres, something that you’ll really feel when playing on Realism and Extreme difficulty modes. Both fuel consumption and braking have also been revamped, with the latter incorporating the ability to control front and rear brakes independently (or you can map both to the one trigger if you’re feeling cheeky). For purists and long-time players, these challenges will feel like a breath of petrol-scented fresh air, but Milestone’s dedication to perfecting the crispness of its on-track racing comes at a price: the threshold for novice and newer players. Despite all the modes MotoGP 20 has to offer, it’s really lacking in a proper tutorial mode. Of course, you can tweak braking and other options at any time, but the game really needed something to break down the different systems and how greater control can reap faster lap times at the risk of being punished for the slightest error. Overall, this is the best package Milestone has ever produced in terms of polish and overall presentation. The overall orange and pink colour scheme really works, as do the smooth transitions between modes and screens.

The use of actually decent stock music (something Milestone racers have always struggled with) might seem minor, but it shows that the developer has really been taking note of the quality Codemasters has been pulling off with its premier Formula 1 series in recent years. That extends into the Career mode, which delivers one of the best and most in-depth takes on the sport yet. The newly introduced aerodynamic model and the impressively detailed damage system will affect how your bike performs at high speeds, and while you can turn this off (a wise decision for less experienced players) it makes for a thrilling recreation of high-speed motorsport. The better you perform, the better the sponsorship and contracts. With more cash comes the ability to hire more experienced engineers who can upgrade and enhance your bike based on your feedback. It’s just a shame that the commentary track never really lifts the experience; instead, it comes off as flat and phoned-in. Historic Mode is easily one of MotoGP 20’s best additions, serving up a cross between the relatively common scenario-based challenges we’ve seen in other racing and sports sims and the daily activity/reward setup designed to keep players returning every day.

Don’t worry, it’s not a ‘battle pass’ with a price tag, but rather a set of three challenges that take inspiration from memorable races. Admittedly, Milestone doesn’t quite plumb the depths of its own history in a way we would have liked – niche motorsport or not, MotoGP has seen some incredible moments in its 70-year history – but there are still some interesting scenarios to wrestle with. What sets it apart is the way each scenario changes not just the conditions of the race day or track, but the specifications of the bike. You’ll likely sink a considerable investment of time into the Career mode, systematically graduating from Moto3 all the way up to the big league itself, but having to control a four-stroke beast as it roars (especially when you’re competing on Extreme difficulty) you’ll find your honed skills pushed to the test. The rewards you earn can then be spent in the Historic Market, which regularly updates with new riders and bikes. It’s basic, but it’s a step in the right direction for the series in terms of player retention.In terms of performance, MotoGP 20 is one of the better ports of Milestone’s considerable catalogue. The developer has been known to struggle when it comes to visual polish on the track (just look at the early MXGPs on other console platforms back at the start of the generation), but improvements to overall performance have made it into the Switch version as well.
