Because of its tough platforming elements and quick-movement puzzles, people have forgotten its unique nature and phenomenal mechanics. However, though I can see similarities between the 2 games, Kandria is a special experience that stands on its own two feet. Developed and published by Shirakumo Games, this is an exploration platformer. Furthermore, there is a wonderful story, some incredible characters, and an amazing post-apocalyptic world to explore. On top of this, its aesthetics are amazingly grim, and the audio is atmospheric, moody, and brilliantly captivating. In short, it’s a challenging title that won’t disappoint. The world has been destroyed and mankind is on the brink. Moreover, gadgets and technology are scarce and factions battle for minor gains. Consequently, when an android is found, the settlers are unnerved. However, a brave engineer knows this robot can save them and trusts her instincts. You control the android named “Stranger”. This special machine can run at high speeds, dash across gaps, and slay any enemy it finds. Furthermore, its computer systems ensure it can complete any quest it faces while communicating over vast distances. Though this emotionless machine cannot feel, it understands the hatred and fear that surrounds it. However, this doesn’t stop it from wanting to learn or help the surrounding communities. The exploration elements comprise many key Metroidvania tropes. Yet, you may freely explore this vast and dank world. Unlike its peers, Kandria doesn’t halt your progress behind special abilities or unique objects. Instead, you can wander freely and interact with whomever you please. Now, this was a nice twist on a familiar genre. However, the lack of structure was a little unnerving. Thankfully, though, the developers made it easy to track your quests. Consequently, this was a lifesaver, as there are many tasks to undertake. You’ll spend much of your time helping the scared residents of this dire area. Whether they ask you to find resources, repair equipment, hunt individuals or slay creatures, the jobs are interesting.

Swinging your sword doesn’t get more thrilling than this

Alongside this, you may undertake time trials to prove your prowess or trade with merchants to buy and sell rare items. Furthermore, there is a basic upgrade system that allows you to improve your sword. Though this wasn’t the most in-depth concept I’ve ever seen, it was essential during the latter parts of the story. The quests are all well and good. However, the core gameplay revolves around puzzles, combat, and platforming mechanics. “Stranger” is undeniably nimble and uses this to their advantage. By darting from platform to platform, they explore tight spaces and avoid traps. What’s more, there are resources to gather and POI to examine. This fast-paced platforming action was tricky to master. However, once you knew what you were doing, it was great fun. Sadly, the same can’t be said for each battle. This lacklustre affair is dull and often tedious. With minimal difficulty, you’ll slash and hammer everything in your path. Occasionally, you’ll have to dodge your opponent’s attack or defeat the equivalent of a small boss. Yet, even these encounters are too easy and this was frustrating. Where Kandria excels is its incredible aesthetics. The moody and gloomy post-apocalyptic world is fascinating to explore. Furthermore, the muted tones and earthy colour palette add to the misery. Alongside this, I loved how you’d travel to the top of decrepit buildings or explore dank underground worlds. Either way, the variety in backdrops and the juxtaposition between open-and-closed spaces were fascinating. The world was great, but I adored the pixelated graphics more. This simple approach worked perfectly! Moreover, the smooth animation and speedy movement were great to look at. On top of the amazing visuals, you’ll enjoy a wonderfully atmospheric soundtrack. The haunting songs add to the eerie ambience. Furthermore, the aggressive music enhances otherwise dull combat encounters Kandria can be enjoyed on a PC, laptop, or Steam Deck. Whichever you choose, you’ll like the easy-to-understand controls. However, I found it much easier to play on Steam Deck. Here, the setup is more intuitive, and this helps the platforming elements. Either way, the controls are responsive and the UI is simple to navigate.

Getting here is difficult, and going back is even harder

What’s more, the map can be viewed at the push of a button. Accordingly, this helps overcome many of the Metroidvania mechanics. With such a large world to explore and multiple factions to interact with, there is plenty to do. As such, this oozes both replay value and longevity. Sadly, though, with no skill tree or in-depth upgrade options, it feels a bit shallow. Had the developers incorporated a basic upgrade system, then the game would have been vastly improved. The indie market is saturated. Consequently, choosing a great game from a poor one is an extremely tough ask. However, I’m happy to say that Kandria is an excellent indie title. Yes, it is fair to compare it to Celeste, but it excels on its own merit. With amazing platforming elements, a nice story, and interesting characters, you’ll fall for its charms. Unfortunately, though, a lack of custom options or upgrade elements will disappoint many gamers. Accordingly, despite these issues, I still recommend that you buy it here! proudly boasts that the game has zero ability gating and you can go anywhere you want right from the start of the game. The same blurb expresses glee that finally, you will be free of backtracking and wandering around for hours looking for where it is you’re supposed to go. And that, to me, is very funny when I think about how much of my time in this game was spent trying to figure out where my next objective was. It’s not really ha-ha funny. That probably does not sound entirely positive, and perhaps puts you off on the wrong foot. This is, perhaps, the best mindset with which to start reading about Kandria, because this is a game that continually makes you think “ah, I know what this is, I’ve played this kind of video game” only for the game to shake its head and say “not so fast” before doing something distinctively different. Does that work? At the start of Kandria, you have very little idea of what’s going on beyond the basics. You are an android, you’ve been discovered and turned on by a girl named Catherine, and also apparently the world got completely blown up between your last shutdown and your current state.

Even in the ruined wasteland, you can still appreciate beauty

That’s not ideal. Also not ideal is that you need some repair and improvement because your memory is currently less than reliable. Catherine, of course, is overjoyed that you work and doesn’t care about any of that, happily dubbing you “Stranger” while eagerly showing you off to the rest of her group of survivors. Said small group’s main other members are Jack and Fiona, with the former openly distrustful of you and the latter equally suspicious but also unwilling to overlook potential help. It seems that the group is under threat of attack by another scavenging group, looking for another suitable settlement point to no avail, and is dealing with failing crops. Stranger thus begins helping out, earning trust, and hunting after a missing member of the group… only to find them with yet another settlement, this one much larger, and with their own overall agenda. And even though no one’s saying it, it’s clear to anyone playing with the slightest eye toward the story that everyone is purposely leaving out information because Stranger is useful… even though no one trusts her other than Catherine. I hesitate to claim that every character in the game is particularly deep or novel, but what the vast majority of them are are interesting. A lot of heavy lifting is done with innuendo and implication; Fiona, for example, pretty clearly shares Jack’s distrust but also feels that Stranger offers her a unique advantage if she can convince the android to stick around. This is all coupled with Stranger’s observations of the ruins she’s exploring, with elements she recognizes well even as she lacks understanding of what brought the world to collapse. And to my surprise, the game repeatedly throws curveballs in its narrative. You keep expecting to find someone new behaving in a certain way, to see a new group as your enemies, only to find that they are… distrustful, perhaps, but they have not been explained to you accurately and they’re also just trying to survive. The world did not start or stop with your arrival, and you’re trying to catch up on trust at the same time that you’re trying to figure out what’s going on. Of course, that also means it’s a plot full of vague innuendo like some combination of Elden Ring, NieR: Automata, and Hollow Knight.

You are either on board with this or not. I am on board. All right, so that introduction above wasn’t a joke. This game looks like a metroidvania title, and it kind of is, but it is also a game that starts you off with the movement abilities needed to get most anywhere right off the bat. This is in part a good thing, because it means that right away you can go wherever you want… and also a bad thing, because the map is large and if you don’t have a clear picture of where you’re supposed to be going, you can quickly find yourself just staring at the map and muttering “what in the actual hell am I supposed to be doing?” See, Kandria is much more of a side-scrolling action RPG than it is a metroidvania, with a big platforming map to explore. But it also has elements of the latter genre in just its general design and aesthetic. It also has several sections wherein you have to use careful dashing and climbing to evade spikes, and getting hit by spikes is an automatic reset back to the last place where you stood on solid ground. Stranger starts the game with a fair number of movement tools, though. For one thing, she has an eight-directional dash that allows her to cover a lot of ground quickly
