Weird quirks of the car AI may sometimes see vehicles take odd unexpected routes, and the lack of an undo option can be frustrating on more complex maps, but Freeways’ simple yet satisfying complex traffic challenges and sense of experimentation in its easy-to-use mechanics make it an addictive addition for any fans of unique puzzle games. Each single-screen challenge in Freeways dumps you before a blank canvas with highway exits and the odd building. Prod a sign or landmark and arrows spring forth, detailing connections you need to make, and how much traffic will head along each route. It’s then a question of drawing the roads. Your finger becomes a magic dispenser of virtual concrete, as you fashion roundabouts, speedy straight bits, lurching bends, and flyovers by way of deft two-finger swipes. As you make connections, cars start doddering about, and you begin to feel a bit smug. When all routes are connected, a simulation shows a day’s use in blazing fast-forward.

It’s then you’ll sometimes watch aghast as your carefully crafted network grinds to a juddering halt. Because there’s no undo, you’ve only two choices at that point. One is to add more complexity to a road system that may already resemble someone having hurled grey spaghetti at your screen. The other is to start from scratch. That may seem harsh – and the lack of undo does irk, especially on occasions where road connections don’t quite snap; but the author explains this was an intentional design decision, intended to stop perfectionism. Mostly, the game’s crude nature is in fact a net positive. It unlocks a kind of immediacy and makes it feel approachable. You’ll be baffled by challenges that seem impossible within the confines of a single screen, before imagining into being increasingly ingenious solutions. It’s all hugely compelling; and if nothing else, you’ll end up with a grudging respect for the designers of real-world road madness.On Tuesday, indie dev Justin Smith released Freeways, a new kind of simulator game that places you in the role of a city traffic engineer, tasked with building a series of roads that must connect to one another and allow for a reasonably good flow of traffic so they don’t become jammed. While learning the mechanics of the game is simple, mastering the art of traffic engineering is not. The planning and thought processes needed in order to succeed in the game are complex enough to mirror the planning done by traffic engineers in the real world. When you first start playing Freeways, you are taken to a beginner map where you need to connect a factory to a highway. Making connections is simple: you need only drag your finger along the screen from one road end to another. The ends of roads will have arrows on them so you know which direction the traffic should flow.

MAPPING AND FACTORY HIGHWAYS.

If you try to connect two roads with arrows going in different directions, it won’t work.) Once you have managed to connect all roads and buildings to one another, a “Network Complete” alert will come on the screen, and you’ll receive a “total efficiency” score based off three main criteria: speed of traffic flow, amount of concrete used and complexity of the system.Each time you successfully complete a network, you unlock another square of area needing a complex road system. Get a handful of these roads down and things become very tricky. While early in the game you can mostly rely on making the most direct connection possible, the further along you progress, you’ll have to start thinking and planning ahead more seriously. You’ll need to add components like roundabouts and overpasses to make sure all your roads connect, but don’t cause a traffic jam. Since Freeways is a paid offering, you aren’t dealing with the gimmicky paywall issues that arise in free-to-play games, and you won’t find yourself being annoyed by an ad popping up every 10 minutes. Other than showing you the basic mechanics of drawing roads, there aren’t any other tutorials. If you’ve never engineered a road, I can tell you that this makes things pretty darn challenging after the first 10 levels or so. Also, It would be nice to have some different interchange types introduced with a bit more explanation. (Like, what’s a magic circle and when should I use one?) Another annoyance in the game is that there is no room for mistakes. If you start building a road and it doesn’t connect properly or you decide that isn’t the best choice, there’s no undo button. You have to just clear the whole board and start again. The more complex these interchanges become, having to start from scratch when you’ve made a tiny mistake that could be remedied with an undo button or eraser gives you a little less incentive to keep trying. I’ve seen more than one person mention this same annoyance in app store reviews, so hopefully, the devs will look at remedying that soon. Though Freeways has its flaws, probably my favorite aspect of the game is the scoring system.

10 DIFFERENT LEVELS.

I love the fact you can go back and keep trying for a better and more efficient design. Though the game doesn’t currently have any kind of achievement/rewards system, most who enjoy puzzles and engineering type games will find the intrinsic rewards of playing Freeways quite satisfying. It’s been said that life is a tragedy to those who feel and a comedy to those who think. The same can be said for “Freeway,” which opens today at the Roxie in San Francisco and at other Bay Area theaters. “Freeway” is rude in the way the truth is rude — only funnier. The movie seduces with its humor, all the while presenting a realized vision of a harsh, absurd world: Moms are crack addicts, dads molest their daughters and the friendly stranger who picks up the distressed motorist is actually a psychotic killer. Of course, the joke is on the audience. This is our world: Laugh at that. Reese Witherspoon, who made a nice little impression in “Fear,” the Mark Wahlberg stalker movie, is an on-fire revelation in “Freeway.” She plays Vanessa, an illiterate 15-year-old who comes home from school one day to find her mother (Amanda Plummer) turning tricks outside the trailer where they live.

The first clue that “Freeway” is more than just a smirky black comedy comes early, when Vanessa’s parents are arrested. The pathetic mother and daughter share a moment of tenderness. There’s love in that relationship, in the midst of all this squalor, yet writer-director Matthew Bright doesn’t compromise on the squalor. He compromises on nothing. “Freeway” never stops coming The picture’s executive producer is Oliver Stone, a fact that invites comparisons between “Freeway” and Stone’s “Natural Born Killers.” Both involve cars going down the road and contain distressing scenes of violence. “Freeway” is not for the faint of heart. Yet “Freeway” has a conscience, while “Killers” just had attitude. “Freeway” has wit and complexity, while “Killers” was an overblown riff on a simple idea. Credit Stone for one thing — backing a movie better than his own. There are many moments in “Freeway” that work in two ways — funny, but with a chill running underneath. Early in the picture, Vanessa leaves home. Her car breaks down and a man (Kiefer Sutherland) drives up and offers her a lift — a nice guy who turns out to be a serial killer. When Vanessa discovers this, she gets angry and asks him.

“Why did you kill all those girls, Bob?” Her anger and directness incite a laugh. She actually expects a reasonable answer from a serial killer. Yet a second later, the viewer realizes that this is a girl who has been abused her whole life, to the point that she has lost her capacity for outrage. If Bob is the worst person she’s ever met, it’s not by much. Enough happens in “Freeway” to supply a handful of standard Hollywood films. The picture takes off in unexpected directions, following its own crazy path. Witherspoon, who does a shrill Texas accent, is dazzling, utterly believable in one extreme situation after the other. Sutherland is also a pleasure in yet another performance in his series of all-American creeps.A white-trash riff on Little Red Riding Hood, the oddly titled Freeway is a road movie that hits a dead end. While allusions to the children’s story abound in the film’s first 20 minutes — its troubled teenaged heroine, wearing a crimson faux leather jacket and carrying a basket, is on her way to grandmother’s house — the narrative goes awry upon the entrance of the wolf, depicted here as a freeway serial killer who preys upon young women of questionable morals.
