It’s something to be celebrated when a port appears as if from nowhere, nearly four years after its initial release, and Darksiders II Deathinitive Edition is one such port; it launched way back in 2015 with the ‘improved visuals’ and ‘better lighting’ that its subtitle hints at, much to the delight of those waiting patiently for Darksiders III to finally arrive. Four years later, and Darksiders III has been and gone, so of course the time is right for the Switch to get a port of its predecessor. Fortunately, there’s plenty to enjoy and those who have been awaiting this release will be more than satisfied. Darksiders II puts you in the boots of Death, a stroppy emo-manchild who appears to have never grown out of his rebellious Pantera phase. His rather entertaining cockiness neatly counterbalances the game’s more melodramatic moments, and it’s never not fun to pay witness to comedic quips from one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Death is also extremely powerful, and it’s not long until you discover just how much trouble you’re in if you cross his path. Wielding a pair of Scythes that look and feel about as cool as you would expect, the combat throughout Darksiders II is perhaps its strongest asset; it never becomes tiresome as Death picks up a swathe of new abilities throughout the campaign. Away from the dungeons, he has a rather helpful habit of discovering treasure chests, so be sure to keep an eye on his movements. This vast open landscape looks terrific in handheld mode, while playing docked on a bigger screen means you naturally see the game’s age a little clearer; still, there’s nothing that would suggest the Switch is holding Darksiders II back or lagging behind its previously-released counterparts. Three years after its initial release, developer Vigil’s dark, massive, Zelda-like is back on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition. This current-gen remaster takes all of the puzzles, exploration, and loot-crazy action of the original game, packs in a wealth of DLC, and improves the whole package while running at 1080p, making it the best version of the game. The inclusion of all of the DLC is a nice bonus, even if most of it is just a handful of new weapons and armor to add to your pile of hundreds that you’ll gather throughout the loot-heavy adventure. Traversing across the colorful world on horseback and grabbing dozens of quests from a slew of fantasy tropes creates an effective, if not entirely inspired flow that makes the adventure feel like a single-player MMORPG. While the visual improvements don’t change the fact that the story is pretty dumb and relies a bit too heavily on the teenage angst of Death and his brothers, the varied environments make exploration an enjoyable experience, especially when you get into any of the many fantastic dungeons. Yes, the dungeons are clearly inspired by The Legend of Zelda’s, but they unfold in interesting, satisfying ways. You solve smart puzzles that require paying attention to your surroundings, find keys through exploration, acquire a new weapon or tool that rewards you with a great sense of progression, then use that to ultimately slay a final boss.

That being said, there’s little here to make me want to take a second dip in the 30-hour adventure, so the Deathinitive Edition caters more to people who missed out on the game back in 2012. Now that I played it again on Switch, I must admit that I’m pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed myself. You play as Death who’s on a mission to prove that his brother War is innocent of a crime that the Charred Council accused him of. However, he soon finds himself on an adventure throughout the Forge Lands where he assists the Makers in ridding the region of Corruption. The journey that follows takes him to memorable locales like the Land of the Dead and he’ll meet many unforgettable faces along the way.

It’s supremely rewarding to lock on to an enemy while hacking and slashing then dodging at the right moment only to use a skill that makes you home in on your foe yet again until they perish.

Traversing stages is also a joy as Death is highly acrobatic and can run on walls with intuitive controls that make scaling large structures fun. As you play Darksiders II, you’re constantly rewarded with loot and secrets that you can uncover by defeating enemies and exploring every nook and cranny. You’ll amass a load of different weapons and armour pieces that you can swap out whenever and doing so will make Death much more capable. Plus, levelling up rewards Skill Points that you can redeem to upgrade and unlock Skills. Both the skill and loot systems are very similar to what you’ll find in Borderlands which is kind of cool. Also, if you ever get lost, you can send your bird Dust to show you the way which is handy although he won’t always help with solving the tricky dungeon puzzles. Even though I love Darksiders II Deathinitive Edition, I enjoyed the first game a substantial amount more. One of the coolest aspects of the original is its setting as you primarily play within a post-apocalyptic Earth and fighting demons in a destroyed city feels awesome. The setting in Darksiders II is beautiful yet it simply doesn’t feel as epic.
