Your protagonist scarpers around multiple environments – usually confined to one or two screens – collecting random objects and attempting to use them to solve obscure puzzles. There’s usually some eminently odd and bizarre NPCs to chat to on the way and all sorts of, usually comedic, narrative hijinks to be a part of. Darkestville Castle emulates the genre’s conventions to the letter, which depending on how much you enjoy these games is either a massive turn on or a horrific turn off. First off, those obscure puzzles. Boy oh boy, Darkestville does not disappoint with its eclectic puzzles. Take this as an early example: Cid the Demon needs some ink in order to doctor a manuscript. Who has a pot of ink? Why, the hotdog vender, of course. But he doesn’t want to just give you the ink, that would be far too easy. He wants something spicy to increase the tastability of his flaccid dogs. At this point it’s a case of going through Cid’s extensive inventory to check out all the objects you’ve collected up until this point, surely one of them will do the trick? A bottle of whisky perhaps? No. Some soap? No. Peanuts? Don’t be ridiculous.

CONSOLE GAME PLAY CONTROLS.

A screwdriver? Not on your nelly. Right then, in that case you’d best go back through all the screens you’ve visited and find a suitable item. Fast-forward forty seven minutes of painful screen clicking until the correct object is found: a smelly coat. Yes, that’s right, the hot dog vender needed a smelly coat to flavour his hot dogs. Does that sound like a fun puzzle? If your answer is yes, than you’re in luck, Darkestville Castle is 100% the game for you. If the above puzzle sounds equal parts frustrating and very stupid, then you’d best give the adventures of Cid and friends a miss. Personally, I find myself rather uncomfortably straddling the fence. Sometimes the puzzles prove to be the right amount of weird, developers Epic Llama giving you just enough information to nudge you in the correct direction, so that when you solve the puzzle there is genuine sense of satisfaction to be had. Whilst I’m not a massive fan of it, that approach to puzzle solving defined the golden age point and clicking. From a visual perspective, Darkestville Castle is a nostalgic delight: Bright, bold, and full of Saturday morning cartoon character. Indeed, if I didn’t know that we were in the much-despised year of 2020, I would swear that we had teleported through time to find ourselves in the glory days of LucasArts. There’s much to be enjoyed here, from the chunky character design to the rich pallet of colours that bring Darkestville and it’s inhabitants to life. Some locations are overused and a little on the empty side, but overall it’s like looking at the daft digital baby of Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas and The Secret of Monkey Island. Darkestville Castle‘s story revolves around Cid, a demon who’s initial quest to thwart nemesis Dan Teapot is sidelined by more pressing issues. He loses his fish and the first act of the story involves taking it back. It’s a decently told yarn in four acts that takes plenty of turns. The characters you meet all seem memorable and have some interesting quirks and the adventure Cid goes on does feel fulfilling.

TRULY A CLASSIC ’90 POINT-AND-CLICK ADVENTURE.

It feels well-paced with each act preceded by an interlude. These smaller diversions feature some simpler puzzles that usually place a new obstacle in Cid’s path. There’s a nice, cohesive structure at play with each act having a main objective to accomplish. I’m always worried about what tone an adventure game’s writing is going to take. One of the things that puts me off some of the more throwback efforts is how forced the writing can sound. Darkestville Castle‘s efforts feel considerably measured. Yes, everyone has their quips but I find a lot of the humour lands. At times, it feels effortless and I don’t feel the jokes are laid on thick enough to be upsetting. It’s pleasant and fairly relaxed, even when the stakes are raised. Dare I say it feels homely. All the cast feel like they belong and it means the whole world carries the same leisurely tone. It’s very knowing and doesn’t step into absurdity too often. It works well for me and I didn’t find myself groaning at the dialogue or ignoring much of it. You use the analogue sticks to move the cursor and help navigate Cid from one location to the next. Items can be picked up and added to your inventory and, as usual, they are used to solve the game’s many puzzles. Unfortunately there’s no way to highlight interactable objects but text accompanies items you can grab, look at and speak to. It does the job, mostly. I can only think of one instance where an item I needed faded into the background. In most instances, the things you need stand out enough. Items can also be examined which can be crucial to find some puzzle solutions. Books aren’t just there to provide more jokes, for example. The puzzles themselves fit right in the usual adventure game track. Some solutions are a little leftfield but there are hints around to piece it together. I can get overwhelmed when the solutions and puzzles aren’t confined to the same area. Each act tends to contain no more than half a dozen locations which makes revisiting them less of a pain. Following the classic style of adventure games from the golden era, the background of the game suggests a horror tale.

THE CHARACTER DRAWING IS CREATIVE.

It starts with a peaceful village which one day receives a mysterious and unwanted gift, a baby daemon. Growing up, the hellspawn Cid becomes the terror of this godforsaken corner of a fantasy world, playing pranks on the peaceful inhabitants of the village. While he nurtures dreams of world domination, his tricks are more of a nuisance for his neighbors, rather than real threats to the integrity of the world. Everything changes one day when three daemon hunters are hired to capture Cid, by his arch-nemesis Dan Teapot. But just like the Monkey Island series, Darkestville Castle proves to be more humorous and not at all scary. It is an old school point and click adventure in which you can interact with several objects and using your wits along with your inventory you have to solve not really difficult puzzles by combining the right objects. The prologue which serves as a tutorial does a great job in presenting the mechanics of the game and introducing the peculiar humor of the developers. There will be no surprises for the fans of the genre since Darkestville Castle follows the golden formula which made Days of the Tentacle or Full Throttle so successful.

The interesting premises, the references to other pop culture creations and the masterfully crafted environments are just not enough. There is no real plot twist, and nothing we did not see already in other games. Also, there is no real variety, because the solutions to the puzzles turn very quickly into a routine. There is no brain twister, no real struggle to solve a challenge. It is enough if you pay attention to your surroundings and dialogues. Once you solved the first few puzzles, you will have discovered the recipe used by the developers in all of the Darkestville Castle. From a technical point of view, the game feels stale. Although the hand-drawn graphics match the atmosphere of the game, the final visuals feel lacking. Overall you would have higher visual expectations for a game launched in 2020. The audio part is completely forgettable, due to the flat tunes and the average voiceover. I’ve found some hiccups in the language here and there, which can be explained by the German origins of the developers. I do find the process sometimes devolves into combining items with people and seeing what fits. Each act feels like a multi-step process where you’re doing favours for favours to ultimately solve a larger goal.

Darkestville Castle does not buck any trends and remains tightly packed with the genre conventions of old. As someone that prefers Telltale’s conversation and decision driven stories, this reminds me of what adventure games used to trade in heavily. If that’s something that’s always irked you about the genre, it’s a welcome warning. You’ll be tested on your ability to think outside the box at times and, whilst the game does have a relatively compact scale, seeing unused items in my inventory always made me feel I missing something. Visually, it takes on a simple, cartoon aesthetic that wouldn’t feel out of place in a browser game. Despite this, there’s plenty of colour and a few of the character designs are charming. I said before the backgrounds do a decent job at distinguishing points of interest. It might look cheap but I’m not really here for a visual tour de force. I think a couple of the Romero Brothers look fairly bland but the remainder of the cast have plenty of personality to them.Voice acting is very well done and the deliver of the actors compliments the writing brilliantly. It helps bolster the memorable cast and drives the consistent, playful tone of the story. Nobody sounds out of place and the performances are good across the board.
