However, Crisis Core stops short of the total upheaval FF7R leaned into, and many design choices made with the original PSP game in mind prevent this remaster from being an entirely unblemished reunion. Just as before, Crisis Core is an action-focused prequel that follows Zack Fair, a plucky and likable foil to his far more moody companion, the iconic Cloud Strife. Starting roughly seven years before the events of Final Fantasy 7, Zack hopes to climb the ranks of Shinra Electric Company’s SOLDIER program with dreams of becoming a Soldier 1st Class – the best of the best, just like Sephiroth. Even today it’s still a great story that neatly ties Zack, Cloud, and Sephiroth’s threads together, with real-time combat that melds some quirky systems in interesting ways – like the strange DMW (Digital Mind Wave) slot machine that brings a bit of the Gold Saucer to every fight. Using Unreal Engine 4 to get its in-game visuals relatively close to parity with FF7R. Character models look great, environments are highly detailed, and even its menus and UI replicate the remake’s clean look that blends form and function so nicely. Though Crisis Core was already one of the better looking PSP games, these visual improvements make it feel far more modern and surprisingly high-budget for what Square Enix is classifying as a remaster. Reunion could easily be mistaken for a brand-new game in most regards, though there are some remnants of the original holding it back from looking as good as it possibly can. For example, the original CG cutscenes are reused here – they benefit from being presented on bigger and higher definition screens, but they are disappointing when compared to the in-game action. Think of them as being somewhere between the visual quality of Advent Children and the cutscenes from the original PlayStation Final Fantasy games. They’re still fun and well-animated after all these years, but that can’t entirely hide how noticeably they’ve aged. Thankfully, that thick layer of dust is easier to forget about in the heat of battle, especially during its incredible summon sequences, which are the single most visually impressive additions to Reunion. Ifrit’s fiery, lava-filled Hellfire never failed to wow me, nor did Bahamut’s particle effects-heavy Mega Flare.

While it’s understandable why Square Enix may not want to completely redo every pre-rendered cutscene, these summons are a tantalizing look at what could have been had they decided to remake all of that footage with modern technology. Animations are greatly improved from the original, but can sometimes feel stiff, particularly when it comes to the way certain in-game scenes are staged. The models themselves look so fresh that it can be jarring when a character unexpectedly moves in a stilted manner, reminding you that, yes, this was originally a PSP game made with the limitations of the time. Still, most dialogue delivery and character movement looks great during in-game cutscenes, and even better in combat. Reunion’s graphical facelift may be what catches your eye initially, but its most substantial improvements are in its gameplay tweaks. Crisis Core was always an action RPG, but the PSP’s single thumbstick and two bumper layout forced Square Enix to get creative with its design, making you shuffle through spells, attacks, items, and more using the left and right bumpers. And you can use abilities and cast spells much more quickly by pressing those same buttons while holding L1. If you don’t like how the controls are layed out, you can even remap virtually everything in the pause menu. The DMW system also returns largely unaltered, for better and for worse. Throughout combat, a three-tile slot machine is automatically running in the upper lefthand corner, and when a particular character lines up or certain number combinations are achieved, Zack can get some pretty substantial boosts. Those include temporarily having unlimited MP or getting the ability to execute a powerful Limit Break or Summon. It’s a fun way for combat to feel consistently fresh, but the rate at which these boosts are achieved is incredibly uneven and random, sometimes making a boss a pushover and taking the fun out of figuring out more unique ways to best them. In this age of ports, remasters, and remakes, it’s refreshing to come across a video game rerelease that preserves what made the original special while enhancing the gameplay to feel modern and engaging. With Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion, publisher Square Enix has crafted a high-definition remaster of the beloved PSP prequel to Final Fantasy VII. It’s a single-player action RPG that follows Zack Fair, a young warrior working his way up the ranks of the renowned Soldier spec-ops force.

Besides the obvious visual improvements, Crisis Core features significantly overhauled combat that delivers fun, free-flowing and combo-centric action, as well as new, extensive voice work during cutscenes. Despite containing the original’s side mission repetition and hammy melodrama, this $49.99 PC game will definitely tide you over until the next installment in the Final Fantasy VII Remake saga. In Crisis Core Reunion, you play as congenial Shinra SOLDIER Zack Fair, whose only aspiration is to protect people and become a hero. This is intriguing and ironic, since Shinra will become a major villain of Final Fantasy VII, and the great strength of Crisis Core’s narrative is how it recontextualizes the bad guys of FFVII. Shinra employees aren’t all mustache-twirling sadists; a lot of them just want to earn their paycheck. Even silver-haired terror Sephiroth becomes an endearing friend to you, at least for a while. But for those who aren’t familiar with FFVII, Crisis Core still tells a solid standalone story of a warrior just trying to do his job while staying true to his convictions as his friends seem to betray him one by one. but they mostly exist to shape Zack into the person he is at the heart-rending conclusion of the story. And since this is a prequel, it doesn’t demand existing knowledge of Final Fantasy VII — although playing Crisis Core first could ruin major plot twists of FFVII. Tread with caution. Running on PS5, Crisis Core Reunion improves tremendously on the visuals of the PSP release, with fairly detailed models for major characters and breathtaking new animations for summon attacks from guys like Ifrit and Bahamut. It’s understandably not as beautiful as Final Fantasy VII Remake, as there are some stiff animations, and environmental textures can vacillate between mesmerizing and super muddy in the same moment. Still, it’s a beautiful game overall, with nice lighting and reflections and a pretty stable frame rate. Some CG videos have also been imported from the PSP, which are grainy but beautifully executed. Meanwhile, the audio is crisp and impactful, and the new soundtrack arrangement is as catchy as ever. In terms of literal number of songs, the soundtrack could stand to be more varied, but everything that is here is terrific. The game also has full voice acting now, and I found it to be pretty solid across the board. Much like protagonist Zack Fair himself, the story of the self-proclaimed country-boy-turned-SOLDIER-First-Class is not one shrouded in mystery.

If you’ve engaged with Final Fantasy VII or any of its various spin-offs, prequels, remakes, or animated movies, chances are you understand the weight of his legacy–which is, coincidentally, only rivaled by the weight of his sword. However, if you’re looking for the definitive way to experience it, look no further than Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion. A remake of the 2007 PSP exclusive Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, Crisis Core Reunion is a faithful retelling of Zack Fair’s story with dramatic visual upgrades, full voice acting, and several quality-of-life changes. Considering the game was already heralded as a fantastic prequel and one of the best titles on PSP, it comes as little surprise that this version is triumphant in making Crisis Core into a modern day must-play for Final Fantasy VII fans. Not only does Crisis Core Reunion port the once fairly difficult-to-find game to several new consoles, allowing for a greater audience to experience the title, it transforms the game from feeling like a smaller, handheld experience into something that can proudly stand beside Final Fantasy VII Remake as a worthy companion. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion follows Zack Fair, a skilled young man who quickly moves up the rank of soldier–Shinra’s elite fighting force–to stand beside other legendary heroes like Genesis, Angeal, and the later-notorious Sephiroth.

However, once information regarding the various experiments Shinra conducted on these elite warriors begins to surface, the four colleagues quickly find themselves at odds with each other. Inevitably, these tensions set into motion the events of Final Fantasy VII, including Sephiroth’s turn toward madness, the burning of Nibelheim, and Cloud’s involvement in the whole ordeal. However, Crisis Core doesn’t solely exist as a precursor to something bigger, as it succeeds in weaving an engaging, intimate, and emotionally impactful narrative of its own. A lot of this is due to the game’s protagonist. Whereas Final Fantasy VII’s leading man, Cloud Strife, has a tendency to be soft-spoken and a bit moody, Zack is exuberant and extraordinarily likeable. Throughout the game, Zack’s mentor, Angeal, likens the fighter to a puppy and affectionately teases him for his hyperactivity and eagerness. However, when compared to the other SOLDIER members–like the stoic Angeal, dark and poetic Genesis, and no-nonsense Sephiroth–Zack is a breath of fresh air who is widely idolized within the SOLDIER program (particularly by Cloud) for his proficiency, zeal, and encouraging nature. Outside of Shinra, these qualities also endear him to our favorite flower girl, Aerith, who shares a brief but powerful love story with Zack, complete with long-distance phone calls and tender letters.
