If anything, it makes it seem like it’s just been arbitrarily made to feel like garbage until you can level up for the chance to make it less so. The roguelike approach to the solo campaign, dubbed Baker’s Battle, is an interesting slant but it ultimately becomes exhausting. Funding all this requires stealing stuff from a modest assortment of warehouses, strip malls, and other secure spots that always look pretty much the same. What I mean is that pushing through the campaign is already an exercise in repetition. Making it a roguelike feels like putting a treadmill in a hamster wheel. From this first taste, Crime Boss seemed like it would be a thoughtful game where patience and strategy are rewarded, one where you don’t need to leave piles of bodies in your wake. And then you jump into the real game, and those new expectations also get turned on their head and thrown out a window. The game’s intro is loud and bombastic, with plenty of bullets, blood, and bodies. This is what we were shown before the game’s release, though it’s not really what the whole game is, and later missions only get rowdy if you want them to. I was able to do that for many of my missions, which also revealed one of many bugs and glitches in this game: enemies just pop into existence when the getaway car arrives, but not in places where it would be discreet. I had enemies materialize just a few feet away from me once I had enough loot to exfiltrate, breaking immersion immediately. While sneaking is an option and it’s incredibly easy to do, it seems that the developer’s intent is probably to have the majority of missions devolve into shootouts pretty often so that you miss these magical henchmen. Ultimately the game is about half Drug Wars-style number management and half roguelike shooter. Each “day” has you play a handful of bite-sized action segments, ranging from bank robberies to attacking or defending chunks of a map. Win or lose, the game continues as the story develops and you react to the board state, so to speak. If you lose while you’re playing as Baker, however, that’s an instant game over. You’re rewarded for the work you did, earning permanent perks to help your next attempt at taking over Rockay City go a little better. Each run can feel relatively distinct, as the game pulls from a pool of intros and events to fill in your overall understanding of who’s who.

The goals don’t really change though, and you’ll be skipping cutscenes you’ve already seen in no time. Every now and then you get little substories that pop up and introduce new characters, but especially early on you’re so ill-equipped to succeed you’ll probably just die before you can process what’s happening. It doesn’t help that Crime Boss also just feels confused about what it wants. The narration constantly pushes stealth, but everything else about the game wants you to go in guns blazing. Being graded on “clean execution” afterward never seems to match how the the level actually went, and implications I was or wasn’t drawing more heat from the police were all over the place and never once clear. Once I stopped caring about nuance, I had a better time. Although the gunplay sequences were pretty milquetoast, so “better” is relative.

The headshots are satisfying and the urgency to finish as soon as possible to avoid the arrival of the “tough” SWAT-style cops puts a certain frenzy on the game, which works quite well in such a context . Being able to flee without completing all the objectives is also a positive aspect, as knowing that the death of an ally for which we have paid tens of thousands of dollars for means his ultimate loss, often prompts him to flee sooner than expected if the situation becomes too risky to avoid permadeath .
