you will speak to every character you come across: you’ll have to talk to them anyway as you can’t progress the storyline otherwise. You will travel the map with a crusty old sailor, Malthe Seus, and a parrot searching for the Eternal Memory. Additionally, Cleo will visit different islands, collecting items to pass on to NPCs to get clues for where she should head next. You’ll also solve some puzzles and play a card game or two of Kraken Fodder. In addition, you’ll brew some potions in the CocktHAL 8000. Visually the game is colourful, and the pixel artwork is very well animated. I loved how Cleo runs with such enthusiasm. Sound effects are appropriate to the gameplay, and with the music, it all comes together in a brilliant package.

The story is enjoyable, it is one of the games that you want to see the storyline through to the end. It is not a long game, coming in between three to four hours of gameplay time, but it is a few hours of good entertainment that I would recommend you try. Cleo doesn’t outright tell you what quests are in progress or how to complete them. This adds a challenge, harkening back to classic adventure games, where you might even need to pull out a pen and paper to write down a code or important dialogue. I had admittedly gotten stumped a few times and had to look up a walkthrough, but that’s all part of the fun. The puzzles are fairly simple as well, you typically just need to find a series of items and insert them in a certain order to complete a recipe or unlock an area. Covering every nook and cranny of the map to find an item can be a pain at times, but the game’s art style, vibrant environments, and ambient music make it more enjoyable. Cleo’s voice acting is a standout feature for me, on par with many AAA titles. It’s some of the highest-quality dialogue I’ve ever seen in an indie title and each character sounds quite unique. There are clever jokes and fourth wall breaks scattered throughout your conversations as well. When speaking to an NPC, there are often two or three dialogue choices, and one will progress you through the story. However, I enjoyed exploring all the available options since the voice acting was so consistently solid. The plot itself is also engaging throughout with a few basic twists to keep you immersed and looking forward to where Cleo’s adventure will take you. One interesting feature is a minigame called Kraken Fodder, which is a fairly substantial card and dice game built within Cleo.

I believe this is a completely unique game and I was surprised to see it fully available to play. It’s mostly RNG-based, but there is some minor strategy involved and I enjoyed the change of pace from Cleo’s main gameplay. Though, one complaint is the animations are noticeably laggy, likely due to an entirely different 3D graphics style used within Kraken Fodder. There’s also a fishing minigame to further mix up overall gameplay. Controls and movement are fluid, but very standard. In fact, Cleo is more of a point-and-click game where combat is inconsequential. The vast majority of your time is spent exploring, and I appreciated that you’re given a fairly speedy sprint option, which makes backtracking and fetch quests less of a chore. Lastly, areas aren’t particularly large, so you won’t feel overwhelmed when reaching a new location to explore. Overall, I really enjoyed my time with Cleo – A Pirate’s Tale. There are nuggets of comedy sprinkled throughout and references to similar games. For example, when asked to gather twenty flowers for no apparent reason, Cleo sighs and comments on it being a fetch quest. However, these seemingly boring quests always have a few twists and turns to make them more engaging than simply gathering stuff. She is thrown into a dangerous adventure and finds herself in a world of lies, deceit, greed and bad breath – the world of pirates – and most of them are looking for the same thing: cleo: a pirate’s tale is an excellent point & click adventure that looks just as awesome as all the classics and works really well too, which can’t be said about many recent adventures (or games in general). cleo is a kid whose boring life turns upside down when a random ghost, appearing from a pirate logbook found inside a dead fish, destroys half the kitchen in her dad’s bar and she gets sent to butthair pete’s boat as punishment. luckily, you can always count on a kraken (hey mickey!) to mix up a lame early morning fishing trip. only to find yourself doing a fetch quest for a siren soon after… but then some serious adventuring is going down and parts of the story are actually quite touching. wasd/arrow movement plus shift to run.

But it’s point & click stuff otherwise, though controller is also supported and there are hotkeys. controls are rebindable but still need a bit of getting used to. by default left click is interaction, right click uses the currently selected item and mouse wheel click brings up the inventory. only the currently held item is shown, which is not great, and mouse wheel should cycle through inventory items in the corner but it doesn’t. it would also be better if tab brought up a documents browser instead of only opening the currently active one. to look at something else, you have to bring up the inventory, select another document, close the inventory and press tab. way too finicky. text appears instantly, dialog can be skipped sentence by sentence, cutscenes by holding the left mouse button. I wouldn’t mind a toggle for non-automatic text advancement, so you’d have to click before the next part plays. besides a bunch of puzzles of ‘find the right item to use on the right thing’ and a few others, all on the easier side of things, there’s also a card/dice mini-game called kraken fodder. detailed rules are available and it seems a bit complicated at first, but it’s fun and there are multiple characters to play against throughout the game. still, it’s not always optional, which was a horrible ‘design decision’. after unlocking it during the game, let me play it anytime from the main menu (it’s not possible), but don’t gate progress with an rng-based game. some speed settings for all the animations would’ve been nice too.

Fishing is another pastime and there are also collectibles, a ton of of messages in bottles, also acquired via fishing. they’re fluff written by kickstarter backers, very much not worth the hassle. an annoyance with fishing is the soundbite popping up after every few attempts, remarking it would be better is she knew what to look for, can’t be skipped. so you’re better off waiting until you have a goal and better equipment. Cleo is a point-and-click adventure about a girl on an adventure throughout the ocean. This game featured a plethora of puzzles to solve, engaging character arcs, and vibrant locales to explore. Moreover, Cleo herself goes on an adventure that is both cute and invigorating. From her unrelenting determination to her struggle with her parental figures, I was both excited and motivated to see her succeed. Even outside of the characters, the writing was funny, and I was engrossed all throughout. This carried over into the odd scenarios I encountered too. I liked seeing the different problems Cleo had to face, and thought the solutions were somehow impractical and so clever simultaneously. Both the character design and overarching story were a lot of fun to explore. I enjoyed the lively characters and the modern tonality in the writing. Cleo’s story was incredibly effective. In addition to solid writing, I was pleasantly surprised by the puzzles. Having played a couple of point-and-click adventures for the site, I often find that the puzzles can be either hit or miss. Cleo however always seemed to strike the sweet spot. I liked how while there were plenty of inventive uses of items, it never took me an overwhelmingly long amount of time to figure them out. In fact, I found myself enjoying the way obscure objects were implemented. They often made the game more fun. For example, I was impressed by the way the world features dynamically react to the puzzles. For example, during the day, in one section a fireplace is lit whereas, at night, the fireplace had been extinguished.
