And so, the game is happy to let you do that, diving into not just the foodstuff creation process, but customising your establishment, managing stock and employee welfare, keeping your customers happy, your ecological footprint and all that other busy work. It starts off small but quickly grows as you pick up on more recipes, get more staff, and expand your restaurant. Things get more complicated as you progress through the instructions of a recipe. When at a frying step, for example, you may need to insert particular ingredients at specific phases of the dish being cooked or flip it about to make sure sides remain even. Plus, there are accessibility options you can turn on, such as fewer customers coming in, no-fail dishes, and even turning off the time limit on when orders should be fulfilled. It’s a very handy set of options and I had some of them on for quite a while until I found myself comfortable with managing operations. There are a lot of specific settings you can enable too, such as making your restaurant vegetarian only. Speaking of operations, that’s the other half of the game that you’ll need to pay attention to. You’ll need to buy ingredients and stock up when there are good sales, but you also need to watch where you source your foods from as that could impact your eco responsibility standing, which impacts your coworker’s ability to work (I didn’t quite understand this one much). Menu management includes learning new recipes and upgrading the ones you already know, which will attract more customers and in turn, more revenue. Equipment doesn’t come cheap, y’know. And there’s a lot of tools you’ll need to buy or even double up on, so your kitchen is working at capacity. Now I do have to say that I am not a fan of the user interface very much. It’s a bit cumbersome to navigate especially when you’re working on a timer. You might take out more ingredients than you want to in the heat of the moment, and sometimes notifications may not be as helpful as they should be, especially when multiple overlap. Accident

Another issue I have with the game is that it has a very tight policy of only letting prepped ingredients move into the restaurant’s opening if they’re in a fridge. You’ll get much more storage later on, but it doesn’t make much sense why some prepped foods (like soups on a tray) sitting out on the counter ready to be served will just up and vanish once it’s time to open. This also includes ingredients sitting in your inventory as well, and sometimes you’ll forget to put something away making serving time just a little harder. On a smaller note, I did run into a bug related to this where one of my blending stations became unusable because I had left pesto on it prior to opening the shop. Thankfully restarting the game will load you prior to opening hours, but it’s a nuisance, nonetheless. Chef Life: A Restaurant Simulator is the best kind of laidback experience you could ask for. Being able to cook meals at your own pace as well as making the restaurant your own space feels cathartic and you could spend hours unlocking and upgrading meals. Not to mention how you decorate your restaurant to appeal to certain crowds, building your own wardrobe, etcetera. A Michelin-star worthy game. In Chef Life, players take on the role of a restauranteur aiming for a Michelin Star. This is the objective of the game but doesn’t hold players captive here to always address it. Players can choose to just enjoy the experience of a simulated restaurant life. However you choose to go about the game, there’s a lot on your plate and you’ll need all the hands you can get.

Thankfully your associate Kassim is there to help you gather your bearings before the grand opening in three days. You meet Kassim after your immediate launch into the character creation, which offers your standard player setups. While you can’t finely customize the details of your character, a sliding scale for skin tone offers a bit of representation. Hairstyles are gender-neutral, but pronouns are limited to only she/her and he/him. Players can unlock more hairstyles and uniform choices with progression, meaning that pink hair or forearm tattoos aren’t permanent and can be changed anytime. If you aim for efficiency with high-marked dishes, you’ll want to be sure to pay attention to the tutorial because the game will challenge your time management skills. The time with Kassim here conveys the importance of prepping and familiarizing yourself with the setting. In a real kitchen, you want what you do to become almost second nature. Actions become intuitive because certain items or tools are placed in a specific way to make way for quicker execution. Reduced steps and actions mean more time for the next task or order. The layout of the kitchen can be customized to best suit your workflow further along in the game, but for now, you’re limited to a static layout. While I played on PC, I had to switch to a controller since some inputs, like flipping or stirring, felt more fluid using a counter-clockwise motion on a right analog stick. As the first order came in, I frantically tried to restart the dish. Unfortunately, I was soft-locked from using a blender; I couldn’t place any items on the table.

I stood there in restaurant limbo, forced to face the consequence of my action as orders continued to come in. Toggling preferences did not work, and I had to restart my Chef Life journey. I encountered this again but solved the issue by replacing the blender with another counter space. Then swapped it back to the blender counter again. A souring experience but not a breaker for me since it could be resolved. Sensitive mechanics like this happened from time to time and is definitely the main thing holding back the game’s potential. Chef Life: A Restaurant Simulator operates in real-time, meaning time doesn’t stop when you check your email, remodel, or look at your main story objectives and challenges on the bulletin board in your office. Challenges act as optional side quests that have an expiry date. It prompts tasks like “cook five meat dishes,” which, if you complete, has financial or experience rewards. Acquiring extra money means players can purchase upgrades to the restaurant. From cosmetics to kitchen appliances, purchases are made through a catalog located in the office. Building experience allows players to unlock items such as new recipes and new plates for dishes. Challenges keep the game flowing, never leaving the player with feelings of not having enough to do. Choose how you spend your time wisely though since certain tasks like challenges and practicing new recipes will play into any prep time you might need for the night. As an experienced worker in the restaurant industry, I found Chef Life: A Restaurant Simulator to be enjoyable and one I could sink a lot of hours into. The challenges of time management set in basic concepts of restaurant life scratched an itch I didn’t know I needed while off the clock. If anything, it continues to help me manage the many variables that can occur in my job. The time I spent customizing the plating of my dishes was probably mismanaged but served as one of my moments of calm. Queue a chef’s kiss. There’s so much to dig into for Chef Life: A Restaurant Simulator; I’m only scratching the surface of it. While players won’t get to experience calls like “Yes, Chef!,” “Behind!,” or the hauntingly distinct ticket machine crunching our order after order, all accurately portrayed like in the television series The Bear, the underlying stressors and demands of working in a restaurant are still there. You just don’t have a walk-in freezer to cry in or an alleyway to pensively escape to. It’s not bad to have a generic story for a simulation game, since the focus is on the gameplay experience. But with the inclusion of the Michelin Guide, it does feel like there is potential for a unique story beat. It isn’t investigated much, which does feel like a big miss. That being said, running a restaurant is difficult enough as it is, and you won’t think about its direction just yet.

Being an owner responsible for the growth of the business does put the story in your hands. While simulation games often put you on one path, there is some deviation with Chef Life: A Restaurant Simulator. Your ambition will determine the direction of the business, and what you experience. The beginning focuses on getting familiar with the restaurant business, eventually diverging depending on your intentions for the future. There are no fantasy elements or anything you wouldn’t encounter in real life. You’re thrown into the restaurant business and experiencing the drive for success, just like a real life chef. Cooking a dish has many steps, such as getting supplies and preparing the stations. Each step requires you to press buttons or move items to the proper section. It’s not intuitive at first, which will cut down on your speed. This can be frustrating if you are cooking quickly, because getting dishes out on time is vital. But the frustration is part of the experience, because making a top-class dish isn’t simple. The time of tossing food on a plate and immediately going out is over. A big part of Chef Life: A Restaurant Simulator is food presentation. While all dishes have a default presentation, you are able to customise the dish’s appearance after it is done cooking. This puts you in control and makes you feel like a professional, allowing you to design dishes as you please. It’s not a simple throw-in mechanic; how presentable a dish is will affect its final rating.
