Oh, and the chance to play as an elegant female protagonist was persuasive, of course. So it turns out that the main protagonist of Bloody Spell is indeed a guy and will be referred to in the plot as such, but this game has a unique way of changing your preference. Instead of a simple “choose your gender” or “select your appearance” option before the game starts, there is an accessory slot for skins where you can select items that give you magical plastic surgery and a customary wardrobe overhaul. It is a little odd to have it determined this way, especially when this game features other clothing slots that will affect male appearances but not female ones. But hey, whatever it takes to sucker people like myself into getting the game. On the bright side, if you want to play with a female skin you can still equip the best clothing for stat boosts without it altering your appearance to look like a Gothic summoner of the everlasting night from a clan of warlocks. You will find some different female skins as rewards or by exploring, but the default option is a traditional garb for a martial arts warrior. As for the game itself, Bloody Spell wastes no time and hits the ground running from the very start.

A Tale of Rescue and Revenge.

After a few lines of text explaining how the protagonist and his sister were orphaned and taken into a monastery to be trained as martial artists, you are quickly dropped into the first stage where you will be jumping into the action in less than a minute- provided you don’t fiddle around with menu options like I do. The game has been described by some as a Soulslike game, but it is actually closer to the style of games like Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, and the more recent Ninja Gaiden titles. Instead of being slow and deliberately paced, Bloody Spell plays fast and loose, expecting quick reactions in chaotic battles. Right away I was impressed by the fact that the game gives you the option to utilize your fists and feet with a variety of combos, instead of just utilizing weapons. It feels exceedingly difficult sometimes to find a 3D action game that places some emphasis on hand-to-hand combat instead of just swordplay or guns, and Blood Spell scratches that particular itch well. Instead of a never-ending list of combos for a single fighting style that is longer than your weekend errand list that will never get done, different weapons have a handful of different combos but each have a unique feel to them. Swords are sluggish but deal massive damage, spears are great for crowd control and damaging multiple enemies, blades are fast and furious in exchange for less damage. The one that really caught me off guard and got me hooked initially were the dual swords, because you can alternate between wielding two swords or combining them together mid-combo to become a Chinese Darth Maul. Otherwise a jack-of-all-trades who utilizes all the weapons in different situations will learn skills more slowly but have a greater arsenal at their disposal. All it really takes is a few unlocked combos for the melee combat to become incredibly engaging again, and the game uses some of the more common mechanics of the genre quite well. You can dodge or block attacks, and a well-timed block will parry the enemy. Complimenting your melee skills are various passive and active abilities that can be unlocked by purchasing the necessary components with the games currency, or finding them in hidden chests tucked away just slightly off the main path of most areas. These include powers such as slowing down time briefly, unleashing a full-screen attack, or summoning an ally to fight at your side for a short duration. Passive abilities include things such as making a perfect counter regain your health with a vampiric strike to the enemy, or giving the chance to evade attacks automatically when you are low on health. All of this is pretty traditional stuff and outside of the fact that the game makes your fists a viable alternate to weapons throughout the game, there isn’t much in the way of originality. However, it executes these traditional mechanics incredibly well to make for a familiar but fun and engaging experience from the very beginning. How well you develop mechanics is way more important than how innovative they are, and the combat of Bloody Spell is incredibly addictive. The fact that you can have two weapons equipped at once and switch between makes for some incredibly sleek and stylish combo work as you can switch up attacks seamlessly and adjust tactics on the fly and there is even a mystical grappling hook you can use to pull yourself into enemies after dodging your way out of madness. A tactic I used quite frequently in mass battles was running away, grappling inside.

Then executing a quick combo before dodging away to repeat. It is nothing too original, but it does what it does incredibly well. Im going to try to make a serious review on this one… There is definitely some fun to be had here. Besides a few rare boss and enemy battles this game is a complete button masher….but an enjoyable one. You can switch weapons, carrying 2 of any kind at once as well as an array of armor. HOWEVER, as many have stated the loot system in this game is completely broken. You’ll find early weapons and armor that you wont switch out most of the game…the only real reason i swapped weapons was because I was bored with the animation of the current weapon. Late game treasure chest are no different. You’ll get excited thinking “there’s no way this chest isn’t going to have a purple item in it” only to be greated with a low power white.. The mini games don’t annoy me as much as they do others. the chest unlocks are original….a fun block puzzle where you need to clear a path from the key to the slot.. The issue is after feeling like a master puzzle solver after opening them, youre rewarded with more junk. They other mini games aren’t anything to write home about. Theres a 3 cup monte, a targeting game, and a cup filling game.

None of them annoyed me, and they all felt at least personally rewarding. The magic system and upgrade system work well. I really enjoyed some of the special skills the player recieved. Black hole and shield were quite servicable in a few situtions. However, there were many skills I didn’t have access to until later in the game. I understand some of the skills were only available after completing the game, but im talking about skills i would receive 1 or 2 stones of the 3 i needed to complete it never to find them.. The enemy design is varied, but quite limited. Im not sure if i fought any more than 10 different enemies total. But that is my true complaint with this game begins. There is so much potential with this game, and i understand its a small team working on it,but i feel the developers are using their resources on things not needed as opposed to things that still need polished. For instance, we don’t need 900 dlc outfits of the lady, I understand what sells, but you have a decent game on your hands. Take that time to craft different enemies, or polish the loot system. They also gave you the option to play as the protagonist sister??? The same sister your set out to save??
