you’ll conspire with allies to demolish the fanatical ranks of the order from the inside out. Provides an engaging complex storyline and a multitude of dramatic voice-overs. Strife is a game that I was only vaguely familiar with as it was made on the Doom engine. Strife: Veterans Edition is the modern port of the PC classic onto modern platforms such as the Nintendo Switch. Thankfully, unlike DOOM I & II which had a somewhat rocky start with its Switch and other console ports, Strife: Veterans Edition seems to be a much better 1:1 translation of the original game. Of course, the game does include some nice but expected modern-day additions, such as gyro control options and widescreen support right out of the gates. Nightdive Studios is quickly becoming my favourite porting house, right up there with developers such as Bluepoint Games. Like previous releases such as Turok and Doom 64, Strife: Veterans edition feels fantastic on the Nintendo Switch, with snappy and responsive controls, a high framerate, while looking good both in handheld and portable modes of play.

Dynamic lighting and bloom.

For the uninitiated, Strife originally came out all the way back in 1996 and introduced the world to what would go on to be one of the earliest examples of a First-Person RPG built using the same engine responsible for Doom. The world of Strife is a mix between classic medieval fantasy with sci-fi tropes and imagery that give Strife a rather unique identity. Strife is an ambitious game, as it introduces NPCs, voiced lines of dialogues, cut-ins that feature unique illustrations for said NPCs, shops, a central hub world, and other classic RPG trappings that elevate the game from being just another Doom clone to being a game feels wholly unique for its time. In terms of weapons, Strife: Veterans Edition features everything from a crossbow to grenade launchers. Unlike Doom, Strife requires players to find or purchase weapons using gold like any good RPG, while also taking into account things such as ammo and types of ammunition, which ultimately makes the game feel well balanced. Enemies can be unpredictable and fast-moving, but also avoidable as Strife is an RPG, in which many characters can be spoken with directly or even completely ignored via stealth options. In essence, Strife feels like Doom with RPG elements that feel well-realized and implemented. As the name may imply, Strife: Veterans Edition may not be for everyone, as the game does indeed feel dated, with most objectives feeling obtuse at best, compounded by low-quality audio recordings which make it hard to discern, which can turn off those looking for a linear or guided experience. Even still, Strife feels surprisingly modern and fleshed out, particularly for those who like older styled games. Despite its FPS facade, Strife is wholeheartedly an RPG, meaning that engaging in unnecessary combat will more often than not, lead to a swift death. Thankfully, Strife: Veterans Edition offers six save sloths, which can be used anytime during gameplay. Additionally, like any competent RPG, weapons, armour and other goods are generally earned by purchasing them for gold, or finding them strewn around the game world.

In other words, those worried about becoming overpowered like the Doomguy can rest knowing that Strife feels well balanced in that regard. The voice acting in Strife feels somewhere between Saturday Morning Cartoon to absolutely horrendous, but in a charming, 90s kind of way. The music, however, in Strife, is excellent, striking a balance between high-energy tracks that pump you up, to moodier and forboding pieces that give a great sense of atmosphere and tension. Strife Veterans Editon is a great addition to the Switch’s library of classic releases. Although it might not live up to the likes of Skyrim or any other contemporary RPG, the title still holds up surprisingly well for a 1996 game that utilized the Doom engine. I love retro games, especially those I might have missed when I was a kid. Strife fits the bill—developed in 1996, it was released at the height of my obsession with first person shooters. Rogue Entertainment unfortunately didn’t go on to do much else beyond a few Quake and Quake II missions packs, and more notably American McGee’s Alice in 2000—but they shut down their studio in 2001. Fortunately, Night Dive Studios—game developer veterans and lovers of retro games—released the Veteran’s Edition in 2014, and that’s the version that finally made it to Switch this year. But how does a game originally developed in 1996 play on Nintendo’s modern handheld hybrid? Pretty damn well, actually. Most of the credit needs to go to Night Dive here, but Strife: Veteran Edition, at least to me, is a wonder on the Switch. Maybe it’s the fact that I’m somehow more impressed that this old timey game-originally meant for bulky CRT monitors and huge grey cases–can fit so comfortably on the Nintendo Switch. My brain tells me that it’s not that impressive—but my inner child can’t help but see something that has no right to be on a handheld run so well. But it’s not like Strife was using the latest technology even during its original release—it was built on the (even then) aging Doom engine, instead of the newer emerging Build or Quake engines.

But the Veteran Edition has solid visuals, and looks about as good as you can make a game that is based on code that is almost a quarter of a century old look. As with most first person shooters of the era, it has a small assortment of guns to eventually discover. It also has an item system—you can carry health kits and other items like buffs that can help you through your journey. Most of the weapons you use are normal shooter fare—and actually seem like variations on Doom weapons. There are some differences, though, including stealth kill weapons like the punch dagger and crossbow. Strife’s action starts slow—and I thought it would only throw a few enemies at me at once. But fights can get crazy, and eventually start to look a lot like Doom, with dozens of enemies and walls of projectiles. The combat in Strife is fun—but I grew up playing this type of shooter, and my nostalgia gives me a bit of bias. But Strife’s first person combat almost feels as good on the Switch Pro controller as it does on a mouse and keyboard. If you prefer gyro controls, that’s an option too—and able to be enabled in both handheld mode and with a Pro controller or Joy-Cons. As always, I’m thrilled to see older games gain new life.

I never would have played Strife if it wasn’t for the Veteran Edition. Night Dive Studios are masters of their craft—and that craft is bringing back old games to a modern audience. It’s something you love to see, and Strife: Veteran Edition is definitely a game that deserves more love—especially for those who might have missed it the first time around, or those who are curious about it from a sort historical perspective. Thanks to this almost no one has ever heard of it, and it was doomed (no pun intended) to launguish in relative obscurity never recieving the recognition it deserved. Believe it or not, this is the game that pioneered interactive AI allies & ingame storytelling in an FPS, things Half-Life was later was credited for. This truly is not only the best Doom Engine Game but also one of the greats forgotten gems of all time. Unlike Doom, in Strife your objective is not to kill everything in sight and find the level exit. The game is built more like an RPG with mission based objectives. You play as a wandering mercenary who joins the resistance toward a corrupt government of cyborgs known as The Order. All of the characters in the game are really memorable and really well voice acted. It also features multiple endings, and overall the story is really engaging. Especially for a game released in 1996 with comic book cutscenes. Strife also features hub levels like Hexen, where you revisit a central town location regularly to purchase ammunition and health items prior to a mission.
