Single Valley was once a quiet but happy town. However, under its serene surface lies cruel secrets and many mysteries. Yet, only a few inhabitants are aware of the strange goings on, and Jack is, frankly, blissfully unaware. Unsurprisingly, his world is turned upside down when a zombie apocalypse appears before his face. But this cheeky lad doesn’t let that stop him as he undertakes a mind-blowing quest to save the town and get home in time for tea. You play as Jack, who awakens from a dream in which he saves a handful of lookalikes from a burning aeroplane in the sky; the real-life however is far less exciting. Jack is prepped for his trip away from Single Valley only to find out his passport is hidden and his plane ticket thrown away. You meet the overworked mum, the beer-fueled couch potato dad and the innocent doughy-eyed brother as you sift through the house for your belongings. This is what makes for the tutorial of the game as you’ll be learning to jump, dodge, grab furniture to move and throw objects like beer to lure your dad to bed. It does a wonderful job of setting up what the core gameplay is for this adventure game and whilst your family NPCs are familiar archetypes, they do well enough to settle you in.

For example, early on in the story, a man estranged from society wearing a tinfoil hat provides the materials necessary to survive several levels. Although the dialogue offers some value for the humor, players will almost always be able to skip tutorials and dialogue boxes without any repercussions.

There are a few bugs left in the game that are unforgivable and frustrating. In my experience with Mayhem in Single Valley, the autosave feature was completely useless. In fact, saving at all was completely useless. Anytime the player chooses to save and exit back to the main menu of the game, all progress and information are gone. The fact that supposedly saved information vanishes with each play session begs the question of whether the feature was even tested. Additionally, there are just a couple of points at which players could get soft-locked in their playthrough. At one point in the game, Jack needs to create and maneuver across a makeshift bridge. Players can easily cross their bridge over to the island to retrieve the necessary key item, but if the bridge is destroyed or dropped, there is no way to progress. A similar problem occurs when Jack finally discovers the cure for the poison. The developers allow it to be possible for players to run out of resources, making the game impossible to complete. This is unfortunate for those looking to pick the game up on a console, but the PC version has amended these problems.

In the end, Mayhem in Single Valley has enough charm to get away with its several issues. Players looking for a quick, enjoyable adventure might find the game to be a worthwhile investment, but it will likely be an unmemorable experience due to its brevity and abundance of flaws. Even with its issues, Mayhem in Single Valley is interesting enough to provide just a few hours of fun, making Fluxscopic Limited a promising developer to watch. Where Mayhem in Single Valley excels is its brilliant plot and wonderful drip-fed mechanics. As the game evolves, you are given new abilities, items, and information to help you to understand your surroundings. Furthermore, each unique location flows nicely and you never feel out of your depth or confused. This was even more impressive as the cryptic puzzles require you to think outside of the box. However, once you get your head around the developer’s mindset, you adjust your way of thinking and this helps immensely.
