Realistic handling behavior is modeled as well. The handling is great, but the crashes are spectacular—metal deforms, windows explode, and hubcaps and headlights assemblies go flying. The IIHS has nothing on BeamNG.drive. I believe the BeamNG developers’ object is to sell the underlying simulation software to other industries, but in the meantime we are left with the most ridiculously awesome driving game the world has ever known. Okay, yes, there are some vaguely game-like activities (scenarios in BeamNG-speak) that involve completing time trials or chasing down virtual bad guys. But the best way to enjoy the game, in my opinion, is to get out there and crash.BeamNG.drive makes this ridiculously easy. All of the maps are open-world and have a free-roam mode. The best way to start is with the original Gridmap, a playground full of blocks, ramps and jumps for you to careen into, over, and off of at the highest possible speeds. If your computer has the electronic fortitude, you can choose one of the photorealistic driving maps—a big American city, a warm Italian town, the Utah countryside, or a tropical island—and let nature take its course (read: slide off the road and into a giant tree). Most maps have dirt roads, trails, and obstacles for off-roading, which, by the way, is particularly well modelled. For the greatest amount of destruction in the least amount of time, you can simply load up the Cliff map, drive your car off the precipice, and let gravity do the work. The game has recording and slow-mo features, so you can record your epic crashes and watch the destruction in glorious slow motion from as many angles as you please.

There’s plenty more to do than just drive into walls: You can order up AI traffic and create mass chaos. You can conjure up a giant see-through compactor and crush your classic low-rider into a cube. You can shoot your car out of a cannon. Or you can fiddle with gravity, turning it up to the level of the sun, which will pancake most cars before they turn a single wheel. Want to lift a cement truck several hundred feet into the air, then drop it on a city bus? You can do that. Prefer to pulverize your beautiful 1950s classic by driving it into a giant set of spinning weights? BeamNG.drive has you covered. Have you always longed to drive a sensible economy car into a piano? Done. BeamNG.drive comes with a wide selection of cars, trucks, and SUVs, all fictional but clearly based on real-world archetypes. (The default vehicle is the hapless Gavril D-Series pickup, which has died a million deaths since BeamNG’s inception in 2015.) The current version has twenty-six vehicles in several variations, and there are dozens more vehicles, as well as maps and scenarios, available for download on the BeamNG mods site. You can even add crash test dummies (or a Stig) to your cars if you have a particularly morbid bent. And BeamNG.drive comes with the tools to create your own car-killing world. Downsides: BeamNG.drive is only available for Windows computers, and it takes a lot of power to access some of the game’s better features, such as multiple AI-controlled vehicles or high-resolution graphics for the more detailed maps. If you want it to run as smoothly as in BeamNG’s demo video, you’ll need a dedicated gaming desktop, as it’ll only run at lower resolutions on your average work laptop (er, if our IT folks are reading this, I’m not saying I know this from personal experience).

Free Roam.

The cars are designed to emulate real driving physics, so they can be difficult to control without a steering wheel or a gamepad. Most objects outside of the car are fixed and non-deformable, so it is possible to wrap your 18-wheel tractor-trailer around a rather flimsy light pole or total your sedan by running into the tables at a sidewalk cafe.Also, it’s technically not complete—this is considered an “early access” game and a work in progress, and the team is constantly putting out new (free) updates with more cars, better scenery, and under-the-hood improvements. That said, instructions are minimal and the interface has a pretty steep learning curve—you’ll need to do some Googling to get the most out of the game. Cars are hard. BeamNG.Drive may have just crashed onto Steam Early Access this week, but I don’t get the feeling that the driving will get any easier. It’s not that the controls are bad, it’s actually the exact opposite. Watch the video above to see how poor. I could noticeably feel the difference between heavy cars and light cars, between a stock engine and a souped up one. I was confused why driving over simple speed bumps would tear my car to pieces, until I realized I was trying to drive over them at 60+ MPH—a feat completely achievable in a game like Grand Theft Auto 5, but near suicide in the real world. It took some time for me to adjust to how the game wanted me to play, but once I did I found there was actually a deeper level of control over what I could make the cars do. Nothing felt unintentional or unexpected about the driving, just very precise with a high learning curve Fair warning though: while BeamNG.Drive is currently a fun sandbox game, it is definitely an Early Access game. There are only a handful of levels, no form of progression, only a couple of sparse game modes, and a whole suite of other missing features. The sound is particularly lacking, as there isn’t any music, and the car sound effects are clearly placeholders.

Modding and Community Content.

There is enjoyment to be had here and the softbody collisions can be really incredible to watch, but don’t go into BeamNG.Drive expecting a finished game, as its Steam page says it is at least 12 months from being feature complete. A few days ago, me wife discovered something remarkable. She realized she had married a simpleton. How did it happen? Simple! I called her over from whatever important thing she had been doing and I asked her to watch a slo-mo replay of me crashing a car in BeamNG.drive, a realistic, soft physics car simulator, with emphasis on aforementioned crumpling of metal and plastic. I was delighted, she was baffled by my repetitive fascination that is encoded in every boy’s DNA – watching stuff get destroyed in exquisite detail. She slapped me on the nape, used expletives that are forbidden in seventeen countries, and went back to doing whatever important thing she had been doing. And I went about writing this lovely review. To wit, I got meself a new game, and it’s one that’s lurked in me wishlist on Steam for a good few years. Cars, crashes, and then more of that. This is the buzzphrase you’ll see thrown about a lot when people talk about BeamNG.drive.

So let me give you a very brief version of it. A bunch of folks decided to make a car simulator. But then, they decided to make it realistic. Well, one primary aspect thereof – what happens when your car hits something. BeamNG was a crash simulation sandbox – and it still is. It’s a game that does let you do the driving bit and whatnot, but that’s only the necessary formality. The entire focus of this lovely title is to strap into a car of some kind, and then drive into a wall, a tree, another car, and then watch the action over and over and over again. Sounds quite unremarkable, and yet, it’s everything I didn’t know I needed.The UI element is crude at best. It comes with some super-annoying elements. First, the abundance of commands, and the fact many shortcuts do different things in different modes. Second, if you ain’t got a steering wheel, you need to drive with the arrow keys, which means binary input – either zero or 100% throttle or brake – there be filters, and I shall talk about them in a separate piece, but. Not refined. Yes, you can configure your mouse, but unlike say Live for Speed, another nice car simulator with decent crash physics, the mouse driving is very imprecise.

And you cannot bind the right mouse key to the brake pedal, so it’s sort of pointless. I didn’t test the game with a steering wheel, yet – I’ve got a G27 lurking about, which does wonders in Assetto Corsa – another simulator, decent physics and all – so that’s something for a different article, too. Here, you simply need to do silly stuff. The more the merrier. Like jumping off a cliff and aiming for maximum distance and damage. The game will supply its own slo-mo camera moments for best effect. So you’ll be tempted to do it again and again.In addition to the campaign, you can also try one-off challenges. I found these somewhat frustrating, as driving with the arrow keys is impossible, plus the cars actually don’t behave as they should. A good example is the Gravity Fuel one, where you need to take a hard turn at the bottom. Totally not how a car would react, not even a modified 1973 Beetle. Besides, going downhill without any power, coasting, that’s a challenge of its own really.If you don’t fancy the stress of these trigger-and-time missions, you can always freeroam, driving about as you please, and making sure you end with a lovely crash, otherwise, what’s the point. The scenery in the game is quite pleasing, and the ambiance does add to the overall experience.Ravenfield
