Voodoo Detective Switch NSP Free Download GAMESPACK.NET It’s immediately apparent that the developers of this noir-infused comedy are ardent fans of classic adventure games. From the traditional point-and-click interface to the hand-drawn backgrounds and animations, Voodoo Detective blends influences from Monkey Island and Grim Fandango in a vibrant Voodoo love potion serenading the golden age of Sierra and LucasArts. The setting is New Ginen, a small island town with a rich Voodoo culture threatened by encroaching chain stores and tourists. You play as Voodoo Detective, a, er, Voodoo detective trying to keep his bills paid and the old ways alive by solving cases with his characteristic blend of hoodoo and wry sense of humor. But when Mary, a mysterious woman with no memory of her past, enters his office, he’s swept up in a mystery that threatens not just the island but reality itself. You start with only one lead – a pendant Mary was given in a dream – but this connects you to various shady characters with ties to Mary’s past. I enjoyed delving into their backstories and potential motivations. TOP/BEST ADULT VIDEO GAMES IN UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (USA)

But there ultimately isn’t much mystery to the culprit’s identity or Mary’s history, despite the enigmatic setup. The story doesn’t take itself too seriously, but the narrative soon careens wildly from a grounded, personal mystery into a more comically (and cosmically) villainous tale without resolving the former. It’s only because this was so full of promise that I was left hungry for a little more development of the world and characters overall, including Voodoo Detective himself. VD’s motivations are kept quite basic, and, though his hatred of the faceless corporate takeover of his hometown is apparent, he remains something of a mystery (even down to his name). This is most noticeable after significant dramatic developments, when his sardonic, world-weary attitude can register as emotional flatness. I was intrigued by the mention of his grandma, a Voodoo priestess, and the attention to cultural details, so more exploration of his roots and Voodoo connection would be welcome, especially with the game’s focus on cultural integrity. The dialogue is well-written and dryly humorous, brought to life by a strong, well-rounded voice cast; it’s just a shame there aren’t more dialogue tree options.

Monkey Island inspired point-and-click adventure!

The sassy back-and-forths between VD and Mary make sections where Mary is involved in the action especially enjoyable. Still, overall she is sadly underutilized, spending much of her time confined to her hotel room. As with character development, this might’ve been addressed with a longer play time (mine was short and sweet at around six hours), as some of the location transitions and the ending feel quite rushed, with a critical motivation quashed at the game’s climax. The gameplay will be familiar to adventure fans, with environmental exploration and inventory puzzles, as well as a few welcome refinements to the classic formula, including text-skipping and speed-walking options, condensing any inevitable backtracking. Hotspot highlighting isn’t provided, but pixel hunting wasn’t an issue due to a pretty focused selection of interactive objects (perhaps a tad too focused in places). One throwback I didn’t love is a couple of timed sequences resulting in game over screens after a few seconds of hesitation, but you can easily continue where you left off without losing progress. The main distinguishing puzzle-solving mechanic involves concocting spells using a Voodoo recipe book. Therefore, in true adventure fashion, random inventory combinations are obligatory, but there’s an underlying logic to them. Puzzles are generally fairly straightforward, with some creative solutions required – including a potentially notorious golden toilet handle moment – but these aren’t typically too arcane, unlike the game’s classic source material. I did get stuck a couple of times, where I found the logical leaps a touch wide, but the game is generally good at guiding you with prompts that aren’t overly obvious. You may have heard of a little game releasing on Switch this month – a point-and-click graphic adventure featuring Voodoo mysticism, set in the Caribbean and with music by Peter McConnell, composer on Monkey Island 2? That’s right! It’s Voodoo Detective, the magical, mystical debut from Short Sleeve Studio, hot on the heels of fan-craze juggernaut Return to Monkey Island. Timing-wise, this Switch release is like arriving at a fancy dress party with a rubber glove on your head and yoghurt pot on your nose, only to meet Mel Gibson wearing the rooster suit from Chicken Run.

Hand-drawn backgrounds, animations, and user interface!

However, having taken advantage of that particular monkey in the room for an intro paragraph, we can confess that Voodoo Detective is very much its own thing – not simply the comedy Caribbean voodoo graphic adventure a grandparent bought you by mistake. The setting is Zo Wanga Isle, an island increasingly overrun by tourists thanks to the growing commercial operations of a corrupt corporation, Island Ventures. Native Zowangians like Voodoo Detective (that’s his name – competing for silliness with his brother Donut Hole Billy) are squeezed by real estate development and profit-digging commerce, cashing in on the local climate and culture. Welcome to New Ginen – a vibrant island town filled with tourist traps, snooty rich people, and a rich but forgotten culture overshadowed by visitor attractions. You play as the titular Voodoo Detective on a quest to help a woman recover her memory, and while you’ve handled other peculiar cases before, this one definitely takes the cake in that it’ll uncover a sinister plot that can threaten humanity’s existence. In the midst of the looming consumerism hanging over the island like a dark cloud, the visuals of Voodoo Detective still look absolutely lovely, with the hand-drawn designs and the colorful character art. Characters are drawn with a whiff of whimsy along with the structures and landscapes that serve as their equally whimsical backdrops, from fancy mansions to even your own humble little office. The top-notch visuals are complemented by the stellar voice acting as well, as every line of dialogue – even the protagonist’s internal monologue that often gets tiring after a while in other point-and-click games – is a joy to read and hear. Of course, this is exactly the kind of quality you can expect from the industry veterans behind this game – plus, the soundtrack contributes to the relaxing tropical island feel of the game. Listening to the soft beats and jazzy notes in the background was truly music to my ears, as expected from Peter McConnell of Monkey Island fame. The game does take inspiration from the popular franchise not just with its music but also with its presentation and humor (and so many puns), which is one of the biggest pros of the game for me.

High definition graphics!

It certainly pays tribute to the point-and-click classics of old with its quirks that break the fourth wall every so often, which is why the game never felt boring, nor did any part feel unnecessary to the plot. The bright locales are not only vividly colourful but exceptionally transparent in showing what there is in the world for you to interact with and explore. This is, of course, a good thing in some ways – no scrabbling about the screen wondering what a fuzzy or over-stylised shape is supposed to be – but it also feels extremely earnest. Everything is displayed so literally and openly that there’s little left to the imagination. There’s no mystery, no half-glimpsed intrigue, no layers of depth from tantalising fringes of foregrounds to bustling backgrounds – everything’s just there on the screen for you to see at first glance. This openness is reflected in the overall tone of the game, and without some darkness or a bit of an edge, it does feel like the humour struggles to really bite. When it could do with being cheeky – the small talk with a bored, rich wife interested in getting to know Mr. Detective, for example – things feel too strait-laced to make some fun out of it.

That said, Voodoo Detective certainly doesn’t want to take itself too seriously. It opens with fourth-wall-breaking surrealism that establishes its license for the inherent silliness of point-and-click adventures, like picking up improbably large items or committing cruel acts to solve trivial problems. There’s an instant-classic gag made out of a “you can’t use that with that” line in the early game, too. The plot then moves steadily to absurd places and never gets bogged down in itself However, the humour doesn’t quite find its rhythm, and isn’t helped by the visual-novel style talking-head approach to displaying dialogue, which effectively puts the world on hold – characters included – to let only one face onto the screen at a time. These spot animations are nice but, in practice, the charisma and chemistry of the characters has to fight against the taking-turns approach. If you’re looking for adventure, you will find it in Voodoo Detective, the point-and-click sensation! New Ginen: a small island town steeped in rich Voodoo culture, overrun by chain stores, infested with privileged tourists. Where local color and colonial corruption clash in a desperate battle for survival.

Against this fascinating backdrop we meet a mysterious woman with no past standing at the center of a drama so profound the threads of reality are threatening to unravel! Join Voodoo Detective on his latest case, where danger hides behind every dirty secret and each thrilling moment may be his last. It’s time to don your fedora and trench coat, detective, you’ve got a mystery to solve! One of the most enjoyable adventure games that I played, in part because it takes so much inspiration from the classics, and you can tell it’s very self-aware of itself and the adventure game tropes. I thought the main character was hilarious with his smug and cynical commentary, very well voice acted, I couldn’t nitpick any of the dialogue except for a few side characters, which again, for any indie game doing full voice acting is a big task, so I really appreciate it. The game is somewhere around 4 to 5 hours if you don’t take any of the abrupt endings, and there are a few small variations in the end, but you can get both of them from the same save point – so it does not add any significant replay value. You can skip the dialogue and make your character move faster so that shorted the playthrough for me a little, not that I skipped much, I enjoyed the characters, and I was never really that bored following the narrative. As the title would suggest, you are a Voodoo Detective, which seems to be his actual name, RAILGRADE Switch NSP
