Unruly Heroes Switch NSP Free Download GAMESPACK.NET Ubisoft made big waves in the industry when it released Rayman Origins, a triumphant return to the company mascot’s 2D platforming roots. Blending goofy humour with thrilling platforming sequences, it captured the hearts of millions, but perhaps the most stunning aspect of the release was the flash new engine that it ran on. UbiArt allowed the art team to manipulate hand-drawn sprites with impressive gusto, presenting players with an unprecedented art style that really did bring drawings to life. Unruly Heroes, a new platformer from Magic Design Studios (consisting of some staff that worked on Rayman), carries on the dream and acts as a sort of spiritual successor to Origins, blending a fantastic art direction with slick platforming gameplay that makes for a compelling experience you won’t want to miss. Unruly Heroes is a retelling of the classic Chinese folk tale Journey to the West, following the adventures of four unlikely (or, ahem, unruly) heroes as they endeavor to collect all the fragmented pieces of the Sacred Scroll and restore peace to the world. It’s an admittedly flimsy premise, but what’s lacking in the story department is more than made up for with the overall charm and humour that permeates every bit of the cast and the environment. Whether it be the goofy band that plays music on the loading screen or the hammy but surprisingly solid voice acting, there’s a certain kind of whimsy to Unruly Heroes that draws you into its deliciously weird and beautiful vistas. Just about every level you encounter instils a sense of awe in how it lays out the environments, paying immaculate attention to detail to make the lush countrysides and damp caves feel like real places with self-sufficient ecosystems. Things like tiny drops of water dripping inconsistently from a cave ceiling or fireflies dynamically flitting about in the foreground cement this feeling, and the way in which the background gradually fades out soaring rock faces and warm sunsets creates a powerful sense of scale for a 2D game. Unruly Heroes stands as a prime example of how well a strong art direction can carry an interactive experience; this is arguably one of the most visually striking games available for the Switch, not because of how far it pushes the hardware.

Experience the Legend of the Monkey King solo or cooperatively with up to four players in local gameplay.

But because of how focused it is in executing the chosen art direction. Luckily, the gameplay is no slouch either, even if it isn’t necessarily anything innovative. Levels are laid out in a Donkey Kong Country-esque fashion in which the path forward is always made abundantly clear, but little caves and branching paths along the way usually lead to extra goodies. It builds on this, however, by instilling subtle puzzle-solving elements that necessitate regularly swapping control between the four main characters to best use their unique abilities. One character can inflate like a balloon to access hard to reach places while another is capable of breaking down special stone walls, and while there’s nothing here in the puzzle design that’ll really make you think, it provides a welcome break in the platforming action every now and then. The platforming itself could hardly be described as difficult either, but it’s clear the developers have made quite an effort to give each level a unique stage gimmick of some sort to make it memorable and interesting compared to what came before. One stage sees you riding a wooden log down a gorgeous river. City Bus Manager

while having to dismount at key points to save the log from getting ground up by buzzsaws. Another stage takes you through a spider’s nest laden with eggs that have to be destroyed in a certain order on each screen, culminating in a fight against the queen of the nest. The next stage then lets you take control of the defeated spider queen, using her attacks and wall-crawling abilities to your advantage. Although the relative ease of these stages does take a bit of the wind out of their sails, Unruly Heroes understands the value of memorable set pieces and diverse stage design, making for an experience that always keeps you guessing. Threaded through all the platforming and puzzle-solving are slices of combat that see your characters having to fight off all manner of animals and monsters, and while this is perhaps the weakest part of Unruly Heroes, it’s still surprisingly engaging for what it is. The four characters all more or less control the same, but utilise a different weapon of choice to make them feel unique, whether it’s an old-fashioned Bo staff or a Zenyatta-style collection of floating orbs. A quick tap of the shoulder button initiates a dodge roll and spamming ‘Y’ or ‘X’ causes your characters to dole out the pain with a mixture of light and heavy attacks.

Kung-Fu fight enemies with a moveset of more than 20 attacks and combos.

Once you’ve built up enough of a combo, a unique and flashy special move can be triggered that torches any remaining stragglers. As a side dish to the main course of the platforming, combat works well, but it does tend to get repetitive with time. On paper, Unruly Heroes doesn’t sound like it should work as well as it does. It’s an action-oriented platformer (which is always dicey on touch screens), it’s derivative of games like Rayman Legends, and adds to the veritable sea of games inspired by the Chinese novel Journey to the West. None of this ends up harming the final product, though. Unruly Heroes is a charming and fresh platformer that surprises at every turn, all while feeling and looking great. Unruly Heroes is a level-based game where you have to run, jump, and fight your way through tight environments that just take a few minutes to get through. You take control of four characters, all of whom have unique powers and abilities to help you traverse these challenging landscapes. Instead of trying to pilot them simultaneously, you simply switch between them by tapping on character portraits at the top of the screen. Running With Rifles

As for story, the game wastes no time with setup. You start wandering a frozen landscape when a goddess abruptly comes down to inform you that your journey westward is fated to be one of conflicts you must overcome to save the world. This sounds like pretty boilerplate stuff as far as game stories go, but Unruly Heroes humorously undercuts the gravity of the situation with quippy dialog that (infrequently) emerges in the game to weave its levels and bosses together into a cohesive whole. The somewhat subversive setup and beautifully animated artwork in Unruly Heroes makes it easy to be drawn toward, but that’s all for naught if its platforming action doesn’t hold up its end of the bargain. Luckily, Unruly Heroes nails a balance of control that feels loose enough for you to improvise some of your platforming solutions while maintaining a certain tightness that keeps things feeling snappy and responsive. This perhaps should come as no surprise, as Magic Design Studios helped make the aforementioned (and critically-acclaimed) Rayman Legends. In addition to feeling great to control, Unruly Heroes has some incredible level design that carefully doles out new gameplay mechanics and gimmicks at the right time so you never get bored with it.

I hesitate to share to many of these tricks, as discovering them is all part of the fun, so let’s just say that some add dimension to the basic act of running and jumping around, while others disrupt the experience to such a degree that you feel like you’re playing a different game entirely. With its fantastical elements and quirky sense of humour, Unruly Heroes is, without a doubt, one heck of a ride. The 2D puzzle platformer and hack-and-slash hybrid even feel a little bit like a beat ‘em up at times, especially when there are hordes of enemies closing in on you and you have to best them using your super awesome combo moves. Slashing away or pummeling magical creatures feels insanely satisfying, especially with vibrant visuals that really spark the imagination. Unruly Heroes follows the tale of the Monkey King in an adventure inspired by the classic Chinese “Journey to the West” lore, where players take the role of Sanzang the Sleepy Monk, Wukong the Monkey King, Kihong the Greedy Pig, and Sandmonk the Sensitive Brute set in a breathtaking hand-drawn environment.  The Sacred Scroll is used to maintain balance and harmony in the world, but now that it has been torn up and scattered across the globe.

The horrors of the night (and day) have come out of the woodwork to wreak havoc on the land. You’re then tasked to go on a quest to gather all the scroll fragments to help keep the peace. There are multiple stages with sub-sections in each, and you have to progress through them in a linear fashion to finish the game (although you can go back and re-do a level anytime). Every stage is incredibly unique, from the breathtaking aesthetics to the wide variety of puzzles you have to solve to make it through unscathed. There’s also a colourful cast of characters when it comes to the enemies, as not only the big bosses but also the little grunts all have such vibrant personalities and move sets that it’s pretty much impossible to get bored with so much variety on screen. Each of the four heroes (that you can swap on the fly) have their own set of abilities as well, and as you breeze through each stage with reckless abandon, you’ll easily find your fave among the four. Still, even when you’ve picked the character that suits your playstyle best, you will have to keep switching between them because you’ll need a character’s specific skill to overcome obstacles along the way.

For instance, the Monkey King can elongate his staff to serve as a bridge you can use to cross over dangerous and spiky ravines, while Sandmonk can punch through even the sturdiest of walls and make them crumble to pave a way for you to pass through. Kihong can balloon up and float through tricky vertical spaces, while Sanzang can straight-up possess enemies to make them do your bidding (which is by far my favourite ability). In terms of battle prowess, each character has his own charm too – for example, Wukong the Monkey King will likely appeal to players who want to deal lightning-fast blows with a longer reach. You can collect Keys to Enlightenment hidden across stages and use them to unlock more abilities for each character, like Wukong being able to summon avatars that can help fight off foes when you’re in a pinch. The sacred scroll preserving harmony in our world has been torn up and scattered to the winds. Now, strange and terrifying creatures are sowing discord and chaos throughout the land. Inspired by the timeless Chinese novel “Journey to the West,” Unruly Heroes tells the adventure of four totally opposed, implausible heroes who must collect all the scroll fragments and travel to fantastical worlds to restore balance… or die trying!
