Tank warfare.

Having recently got into Panzerkorps a bit and wished certain things were just a little bit different I randomly spotted this coming out on the day of release and decided to take the plunge given the very reasonable price and so far I’d say it’s a solid purchase. It’s very similar to Panzerkorps but with a few key differences that I think make things quite a bit better. Most notably you are able to occupy each hex with up to three units instead of one (with its own benefits and drawbacks), and far more units are able to attack from further than an adjacent hex (most notably tanks, which can generally engage from two hexes away, meaning you get far more versatility along with long range tank battles). Air units work like one off skills rather than units that need to be constantly shepherded between air bases (and for some reason aren’t able to bomb the same target). In addition units work based on action points as opposed to having one move and one attack action, meaning you have far more movement options (no more taking a full turn to move one whole space over a river) and can potentially attack multiple times a turn when stationary. On the topic of attacking.

TTG also has a neat “assault” mode of attacking wherein several units in the same hex can make an extra aggressive all-in combined arms assault into the enemy’s hex where much more damage is dealt between combatants and the attacker can force the defender (if they survive) out of the hex and claim it for themselves. This distinction between long range fighting and brutal close quarters fighting definitely makes combat more interesting than units sitting base to base chipping away at each other and makes for some dramatic moments. Units can be reinforced for free (albeit at the cost of a whole turn) and can play a full turn straight after deployment, meaning less turns transporting defenceless units to the frontline and less time spending all your cash on reinforcing units, and in turn more time getting stuck into fighting much sooner. On that note, there seem to be far less options compared to Panzerkorps, but for me that just means less choice paralysis over superfluous units and significantly less to learn/remember. One big thing this game has over Panzerkorps is US and Soviet campaigns right off the bat rather than just 10,000 hours of German only campaigns.

Base building: Players can build their own bases and upgrade them to unlock new units and technologies.

The campaigns and missions aren’t as copiously long as Panzerkorps (again, more of a plus for me) but they are accompanied by great narration and historical footage. The game overall looks and runs great and has some great sound design as well. The UI is also far less cluttered and overwhelming than Panzerkorps and as a result battles seem to flow much better. Overall I’d say it’s well worth the price, especially if you’re hankering for Panzerkorps with factions that aren’t Nazis. There are some minor points for improvement (no do-overs, units being sometimes hard to read on screen, the unit cycle button and overwatch/end turn button being opposite corners of the screen) but otherwise it’s a solid recommend from me. The game features a campaign mode, where players can follow a storyline and complete missions to progress through the game. Players can choose from multiple factions, each with their own unique units and technologies. Players must manage their resources carefully to build and maintain their tank army. Players can upgrade their tanks and research new technologies to gain an advantage on the battlefield.
