Seven years on from its debut, is this the ultimate version of Hideki Kamiya’s unique vision? Well, as far as the Switch version of The Wonderful 101: Remastered goes, there’s both good and bad news: this remains a distinctive, substantial and rewarding game, though technical hiccups and a lack of desire to address existing flaws take off some of the shine. The highs of The Wonderful 101 were some of my best gaming moments of 2013 – and wouldn’t you know it, seven years later it still hasn’t lost its Platinum luster. Tragically, relatively few action game fans got to experience it because it’s been limited to the Wii U until now, but The Wonderful 101 Remastered has finally escaped onto Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC and it’s every bit as good as the 2013 original. In fact, it’s even a little bit better thanks to smoother performance, faster load times, and a few smart additions that make its notorious learning curve a little easier. I wish it’d gone further with those and done more with the visual upgrade to justify the “remastered” label as opposed to being a straight port with a few tweaks, but this is still the definitive version of one of the most refreshingly different and endearing action games ever made. Leave it to Platinum to take the “small army” concept of Pikmin and its ilk and make an action game out of it. The Wonderful 101 is lovely on so many levels, chiefly because it’s unlike pretty much every game out right now (still) from both an aesthetic and gameplay perspective. Taking control of a swarm of superheroes, you’ll do battle with the evil alien Geathjerk Federation under the guidance of Wonder-Red, a badass who also happens to teach elementary school. The whole premise and light hammy touches smack of old school sci-fi and spy Americana, while adding in a Japanese-tinted Kaiju spin. While the narrative is often background noise, the whole symphony of madness comes together with the chaotic gameplay. That “swarm” combat mechanic, mind, is mostly what makes Wonderful 101 so special, even if it sometimes falls into a rote routine. The Wonderful 101 gives you control of a heroic team leader — initially Wonder-Red, then Wonder-Blue and other color-coded heroes — who fights alongside their superhero brethren and the ordinary citizens who join the battle against alien invaders. It’s a campy, colorful adventure. Game director Hideki Kamiya seems to stuff everything he likes — tokusatsu-style action, retro video games, action figures, charismatic but corny hero characters — into The Wonderful 101, and it’s evident he had a delightful time doing so.

As noted in Polygon’s original review of The Wonderful 101 from 2013, in order to combat bad guys, I must draw shapes like a straight line, a circle, or an S-curve to summon weapons (a sword, a fist, or a whip, respectively). This is the power of the Unite Morph, an ever-growing arsenal of combat tools used by the international superheroes known as Wonderful 100 (the plus-one here is you). New attacks are purchased from an in-game shop, similar to systems from other Kamiya-led series like Bayonetta and Devil May Cry. The original was widely misunderstood on release, and that’s only partly the game’s doing. It was frequently likened to Nintendo’s Pikmin 3, but such comparisons were misleading: The Wonderful 101 is very much within PlatinumGames’ wheelhouse: more character-action game than real-time strategy, even with you commanding a 100-strong army. But there’s so much more here. At times it’s a one-on-one brawler, at others an on-rails shooter. There’s platforming, puzzles QTEs and minigames besides. If variety is the spice of life, then The Wonderful 101 would rank alongside the ghost pepper on the Scoville scale. Banana Ranch

This maximalist approach is in keeping with director Hideki Kamiya’s loving homage to the effects-heavy sci-fi serials of his youth, such as Kamen Rider and Ultraman. Its story pits your army of superheroes against an invading alien force, the wonderfully-named GEATHJERK (it stands for Guild of Evil Aliens Terrorizing Humans with Jiggawatt bombs, Energy beams, Ray guns and Killer lasers, for those taking notes) in a series of battles that take you from a ground invasion into the stratosphere and beyond. The characters are all larger-than-life archetypes, but the clichés are deliberate, and the whole thing is played with its tongue firmly in its cheek. You control up to 100 of these heroes at once, gathered in a tight group around a single leader. Over time, you’ll recruit a series of special characters that afford you a range of abilities that let the group transform into giant weapons. Using the right stick or the touchscreen – though we wouldn’t recommend the latter – you’ll draw simple shapes to become a giant fist, a sword, a gun, a whip and more. It’s hardly second nature, but once you realise that many of these equate to the kind of brisk stick movements you use in other fighting games (simple lateral movements and quarter-circles, for the most part, will serve you well) the combos really start to flow.

The Wonderful 101 is a rare breed of action game even for Platinum Games, the developer that has basically written the book on them at this point. Its 10 to 12-hour adventure is an absolutely delightful superhero/sentai-inspired romp with great characters, amazing music, and some of the most downright impressive boss battles you’ll ever see. You control a group of tiny heroes known collectively as the Wonderful 100, and by using the right stick you can draw simple symbols that allow you to morph your mob into the shape of a weapon. For example, if you draw a circle they’ll make a fist; draw a straight line, you’ll get a sword; an L-shape transforms them into a gun; and a curvy line creates a whip. Banished

Where things get really interesting is in the ways that these weapons interact with the world and your enemies. A visual language eventually starts to develop where you’ll learn that when you see spikes, you need to switch to the whip; when there’s a beam, you’ll need a sword to reflect it; when there’s a circular bomb on the ground, you’ll need to use the gun to suck it up and shoot it out. Very little of this visual language is intuitive, which is why it’s a bit of a problem that it is rarely explicitly taught to you. You kind of just have to pick up on it as you go, and at times it can feel like the developers expect you to read their minds when it comes to knowing how to avoid certain attacks. It doesn’t help either that Wonderful 101 is uniquely punishing if you don’t know what to do in the moment. Getting hit, using the wrong weapon, or even using the right weapon at the wrong time can cause your group of heroes to careen off in all directions and leave you unable to defend or attack until you gather them up again; drawing specific glyphs can be finicky until you learn certain tricks that prevent you from mistakenly drawing the wrong one; and fighting some enemies without knowledge of key weaknesses can be extremely long and arduous affairs without any indication that there’s a better way.

Platinum has clearly identified the learning curve as a problem, as Remastered includes a few small adjustments that make it a little more inviting to newcomers. Unite Guts and Unite Spring, two vital techniques that essentially serve as a block and dodge button, respectively, are now basically free in the abilities shop from the start, emphasizing more than ever that these skills need to be purchased immediately. To fight back against the alien menace, you’ll curl or crease your collective of heroes into lines to craft weapons: a straight line is a sword, a squiggle is a whip, and so on. Longer lines mean stronger weapons, and you can craft a few auxiliary things like hang gliders with other shapes. The game’s dodge (a slinky maneuver) and block (gelatin) are also unique, and add some calculated action tropes in with the madness of the system. There’s a “light parrying system using Jell-O.” How many times do I get to type a phrase like that out?! Being able to double-jump up to new areas, quickly solve light puzzles and navigate hidden locations and secret missions is pure Platinum. Beyond the 15-to-20-hour campaign, multiplayer missions are also still in, and thankfully can be played completely solo or with a crew of up to four players.
