But were the developers at Slormite Studios really able to achieve all of this? The short answer is yes! Well, we will reveal the details in this review. As for the plot, although it is linear, without any special twists, it is nevertheless filled with humour and various surprises. As you progress through the main campaign, you will return the missing residents to the city, who, in gratitude for this, will open up new opportunities for you. And although you will have to pay for their services, and not a little, they will reward you with various new features of the gameplay, for example, they will open up new resources for crafting and upgrade your equipment. for example, they will open up new resources for crafting and upgrade your equipment. But despite the fact that the game is filled with humour, the developers approached the development of the character quite seriously. You will find levelling of characteristics, and the discovery of new skills with their subsequent modification, an intricate tree with various passive and active skills, as well as 3 specializations for each class. They allow you to unleash the full potential of the class, the efforts of its special skills. The levelling process is very simple and very interesting, while you can always reset the spent Slorm (a special type of resource) and redistribute them in a new way. Not without a mountain of loot! More than a dozen different types of equipment, with weapons playing an important role. It drops out extremely rarely, but each is unique and has its own characteristics. The level of the weapon is levelled along with your hero, and also affects your playstyle. In the city, you can open special NPCs that will give you the opportunity to improve your equipment, the main thing is to have time to collect resources for this. In the midst of a sea of gritty realism and deep, emotional stories, sometimes it’s refreshing to lose oneself in a title that is completely devoted to just having fun. No tortured protagonists or complex moral choices, just pure, unadulterated fun. Slormite Studios’ debut game, The Slormancer, gleefully embraces this with arms open wide, bringing players into a world of dungeons, magic, strange names and prized MacGuffins.

An irrational story!

Released in Early Access, The Slormancer is a pixel art loot-based action RPG set in the medieval fantasy kingdom of Adreart. You are summoned by the great hero Bryan McRipped to assist him on a quest most epic. Summoned, you understand, not forced by your grandfather whatsoever. You’re totally not hoping they won’t need you after all. Through a fetch quest gone awry, it is suddenly up to you, the village dead weight (no, really), to put an end to the evil Slormancer Ohm Agad and his bumbling underling who have shown up pretty much on cue to take over the world. Again. You can probably pick up on the game’s overall tone. While there are a plethora of titles that satirise fantasy RPG tropes, The Slormancer is fairly unique in that it’s hardly ever too heavy-handed about its humour. Many titles wield the parody angle like a sledgehammer, socking players left and right with dialogue and events that scream, “We’re THIS kind of game, can you tell?!” But here the humour naturally hits its mark every time, sometimes to the point of eliciting unexpected belly laughs — an approach that’s more in line with the game’s sardonic tone. You can play as one of three very reluctant but recognisable classes: the “Mighty” Warrior, the “Fierce” Huntress or the “Mischievous” Mage. They will tell you in no uncertain, but extremely convincing terms, why you shouldn’t pick them, which led me against my usual bow tendencies to pick the Mage. However, you are free to switch between characters at any point to change playstyles and mix things up.Paper Cut Mansion Switch NSP

Each class has a comprehensive collection of skills and abilities to master, all highly customisable with multiple skill trees and aspects. Some are hilariously inventive too, like the Mage’s ‘Book Smash’ (my personal favourite) which allows you to smite your foes with knowledge, literally! Combat is punchy and fast-paced with sprays of projectiles and artful dodges, akin to bullet hell but not so overwhelming that you lose concentration in all the kerfuffle. And like any loot-based RPG, there’s an endless array of items for players to get their hands on with an infinite upgrade system. No worrying about sacrificing damage for armour as you can attach an unlimited amount of perks to make yourself every bit the hero you’re expected to be. Slormite Studios know what looty fans like! But with lots of options, items and skills comes lots of text-heavy explanations of their uses and effects, as is typical of the genre. The Slormancer is perhaps too extensive on that front; the inventory and skill menus are filled with walls of text at times, which can be a little intimidating, especially for new players. Even the witty item summaries underneath are overshadowed by it. The text is also very small, and will be a little taxing to read even for those with excellent eyesight. Thankfully the pixel art graphics are easy on the eyes, blending classic pixel sprites with wacky, cartoon-like movements; the walking and running animations are endlessly entertaining. The Slormancer also boasts “a soundtrack so breathtaking that you will never want to hear something else again”. Admittedly I didn’t even fight any urge to raise my eyebrow in skepticism.

Three unique Classes.

Consider my hand well and truly slapped: the music is simply phenomenal. Epic orchestral scores are mixed with bouncy Saturday morning cartoon vibes and even hints of Danny Elfman-esque ambience. Think classic Tim Burton soundtracks like Edward Scissorhands or The Nightmare Before Christmas. It matches the game’s dark yet whimsical aura perfectly and appeals to both the intellectual and child in you. Never mind their own trumpet, Slormite can blow their own entire brass section! The Slormancer is an epic 2D Action-RPG Dungeon Crawling game following a band of outcasts on their fight against hordes of enemies led by The Slormancer! Play as a “Mighty” Knight, a “Fierce” Huntress or a “Mischievous” Mage, master hundreds of abilities and ancestral powers, gear up, fight for the reputation of your kind and prove your value to the realm. Featuring loads of shiny Loot, tons of collectibles, countless hours of content, a frenetic gameplay and carefully crafted pixel art. You were born with absolutely no skill whatsoever, and yet you find a way to be the last hope of the realm as the enigmatic Slormancer and his incompetent underling try to conquer the world once again. How great. But like your grandfather once told you: “You might not have the talent but you have the will.”Akai Katana Shin Switch XCI

There are always things to do and monsters to kill! And it’s always different! Absolutely amazing pixel art ARPG with charm and great understanding of what makes a good ARPG – exciting loot, deep character customisation for varied builds, good crafting, interesting poppy skills and mechanics. This game isn’t getting nearly as much attention as it deserves. If the developers can bring it to completion it has potential to be the next big indie game. The story needs fleshing out (becomes quite redundant/fetch questy, despite its somewhat self-awareness of this) but has huge potential, not taking itself too seriously and with ridiculous characters and funny dialogue, it feels like it could be really fresh if done to completion, which is a rare trait for games of this kind. I’m absolutely loving the gameplay and character customisation, which is my main reason for playing ARPGs. Deep and rich with so many options.

An EXCELLENT take on Diablo’s genre. Some bits of it are more directly cribbed from its big brother, but entirely in a loving way- and refreshingly modern. It has a lot of nice quality of life touches that feel great and really show that the creators are true fans of the genre. Balance is just a little uneven, and abilities have SO MANY interconnecting mechanics that just making a working build in the midgame can feel like a puzzle, as you try to figure out which procs you even have the ability to trigger, and which ones are effectively useless text. That kind of puzzle is part of the joy of games like this though, and the rough edges will certainly be polished over time. The game is very obviously incomplete- but it’s already standing on its own two legs. They’re making a bit of a brave choice with build loadouts, limiting you to just two abilities in your class, plus four slots for more generic elemental abilities that might be auras or actives. I’m not sure I love this, but in its current state the content ends before it’s fully fleshed out, so maybe it’ll turn out fine in the end. I definitely kind of wished that maybe one third skill could be equipped from your class onto a number key. (Note: it’s actually three from your class, but one pulls double-duty as a sort of subclass passive provider and utility, which is fine and good but you still feel a bit constrained in your combat options without a third offensive spell.

The rest is really fun. Nice upgrade systems that slowly unfold and explain themselves through trial and error. A very fun expedition system where you get scaling content that plays out with different objectives and level design, each with its own reward system. That’s definitely the highlight of the game! Pretty great game! Unfortunately not complete so you can’t finish the story just yet, but the update is coming this month. I have spent hours on end playing this and i just keep coming back to play because i like the game play. Even though the game is not finished you can still spend tons of hours in this game just trying to upgrade your characters alone, or just trying to find more weapons. I feel that i have gotten my money’s worth then some in this one. Well, I think it has a major design flaw regarding performance. I play a simple architect of death huntress with rain of arrows, heavy exploding projectile (HEP), crits, poison and totems. Every time a use rain of arrows or HEP, there is a little microstutter. Any time I hit some enemies with something, there is a bigger microstutter and when I hit many enemies, the game literally freezes for a quarter of a second or even longer. This game is designed to throw lots of enemies at you so when playing it, there is a constant stuttering and freezing and your character teleporting around. This is not acceptable for me and definitely needs work. I really hope Slormite will make this work but – me being a hobbiyst game dev – I also think this will probably require rewriting a lot of base gameplay code and overthinking the game architecture.Overkill’s The Walking Dead
