It’s a fine mix between stunning medieval tapestries and a dark, moody storybook, almost like an Old English version of a Grimm’s Fairytale, holding a Beatrix Potter book at knife-point. I know, I know, that sounds utterly bizarre, but it’s honestly quite striking to experience, and fans of Redwall will be impressed. Despite being 2D, the layered backgrounds add a lot of depth to the setting, painting a harrowing image as you watch nurses aiding the injured, workers attempting to repair buildings, and the ever-looming danger of enemy processions in the near-distance. Even the menus and load screens are perfectly on-brand, and I felt completely transported to another world. The game also works beautifully on both handheld and docked mode, and I didn’t come in contact with any bugs (well, not glitches, there are plenty of creepy-crawlies to shank). Character and enemy designs are varied, animations are unique, while armour and weapons fit perfectly with their stats and where you got them from. The game doesn’t hold back on the brutality and gore, but doesn’t feel gratuitous. Finishers are extremely satisfying, as you impale the heads of frogs, and dismember those pesky bugs, soon finding yourself coated in the neon goo of their entrails.

Customise Your Attack.

But we’re not talking an all-out, Rob Zombie-style bloodbath – just enough to feel the grit of the battles you’re taking part in. The swelling orchestrals of the soundtrack are fitting in both mood and setting, without being too distracting. Of course, this is complimented by the wonderfully mellow timbre of the ever-talented Doug Cockle’s narration (Geralt of Rivia from the Witcher games). Acting as narrator, his emotive and eloquent storytelling really enhances the fairytale feel, transporting you to the forefront of Redgi’s epic tale. Not a beat of the story is missed, and I could honestly listen to this man speaking about the rat kingdom for hours. On the other hand, the rats have an… Interesting sound design. Whenever they speak, it sounds like an out-of-tune recorder or a broken flute (reminiscent of the Clangers) which was very cute and befitting of their distress at first. However, as any parent with a young child going through music lessons at the moment will know, it gets old pretty fast, and I found myself avoiding chatting with NPCs and even muting my TV to avoid these ear-piercing squeaks.College Kings 2

However, I adored the pictogram speech bubbles they use to express themselves, the little symbols really felt like you were talking to a medieval critter. The term ‘Soulslike’ gets thrown around a lot these days, but, pardon the pun, Tails of Iron does nail the soul of a Soulslike quite well. With essential elements like dodges and parries galore, studded with charged and short attacks, and pretty much everything else you could want. The parries are one of the most comfortable I’ve used on the Switch, as you hold one trigger then hit the other at the right time, and the enemies even give colour prompts, which make it more accessible to new players without sacrificing too much of its trickiness. The screen changes to greyscale when you get to low health, though, which momentarily makes the colour prompts void, and does seem a bit of an oversight. Tails of Iron challenges you to reclaim your fallen kingdom from the clutches of a horrible frog clan. You’ll fight harrowing battles, dodging and parrying your way to victory. This is a game that gives no quarter, demanding that you learn its intricacies right off the bat.

Master Brutal Combat.

Just be ready to fail over and over again as you get better, and prepare yourself for many “You Died” screens. This game is tough, brutal and grisly, but it all creates a certain charm that’s hard to describe. It’s like a bloody and war-torn version of Redwall. On the one hand, Tails of Iron features a drop-dead beautiful hand-drawn art design, an endearing silent protagonist and veteran voice actor Doug Cockle as the narrator. On the other, you’re left to deal with a dark and grim story, which pits you against many a merciless and murderous enemy. In this Tails of Iron review, I’ll break down this game, in which you must reclaim your crown and throne, and push back the frogs that have invaded and pillaged your home. Odd Bug Studios’ Tails of Iron looks like a game that’s very common these days. It is a hand-drawn 2D action adventure game with RPG mechanics, punishing combat and optional exploration. With those descriptions it was possible for Tails of Iron to feel derivative. The story of your adventure is a single moment in ages of warfare. You play as a young prince rat named Redgi. His father, the rat king, led his kingdom to a temporary victory over their nemesis through generations, a kingdom of frogs. The beginning of the game sees an elderly rat king pass his crown to Redgi right before the latest siege of the frog kingdom which demolishes their kingdom, Crimson Keep. Tails of Iron rebuilds a kingdom through action. Moving through the story and completing side quests has a tangible effect on the overworld. The player starts out ruling over a ruined land, but they will slowly and steadily build it back from the brink. The ravaged courtyard of Crimson Keep will become home to working rats and music after a few quests instead of being home to rubble and corpses. Long Tail Village’s merchants and citizens return after helping their local leader. Even the areas outside of the main cities see the same type of rebuilding. Farms and Mines will begin production again.

Overcome Savage Boss Fights.

Routes out to distant areas will have bridges built and enemies cleared to make them less tricky to navigate and treacherous. Time invested in Tails of Iron gives a satisfying sense of actually affecting the world. Quests come in a few different flavors. Mostly it’s combat, but there are a number of retrieving item missions plus some rescue missions. Rarely, one of the tasks for Redgi is to escape an area he’s become trapped in. Two early quests involve rescuing two castle workers, a chef and a blacksmith, from frog encampments. Later the blacksmith will ask you to fetch a book of blueprints in order to better outfit Redgi for his trials. The smallest quests are as easy as existing in the world; it’s possible to buy items such as paint and wood from vendors then trade those items to a farmer to start a commercial beehive. The majority of quests involve going to an area and clearing out any present enemies. Frogs were seen by scouts in the sewers, so Redgi will have to venture into them and slay all the frogs. A local farmer has a bug infestation in his cellar. All the dead frogs in the sewers are attracting dangerous wildlife.

Even if the design of these quests are similar, the mechanics of each type of enemy make the fights unique, and Odd Bug Studios made an effort into thinking of ways to incorporate these quests into the story of the world. I never felt like I was going down into a dungeon to kill something just because. The inventiveness behind the mainline quests starts to run out of steam a bit around the last hour or so of the game, but for 90% of my playthrough the quest stories were engaging. The rewards for these quests are all useful. They can be a new weapon or armor, items to feed back into the RPG systems like blueprints or food, or currency to spend how you would like. The mechanics of defeating enemies is a melee combat system focused on recognizing attack patterns and punishing openings left by enemies. Reacting to attacks is either shielding or dodging. This is another instance of being something very familiar. Despite the tried-and-true nature of the combat mechanics, none of the fights are boring. Each enemy unit has unique moves that need to be learned, as well as some units having a defensive stance that needs to be broken first.

Tails of Iron has a refreshingly simple set-up, enabling the player to get stuck immediately into the action. Redgi the prince of the Crimson Fortress – and your avatar – is ready to be dubbed King when a war band of vicious frogs invade the kingdom. These ferocious froggies sow chaos and destruction throughout the land, brutally killing Redgi’s father in the process. Once the dust has settled and the gore has dried, Redgi begins a quest to rebuild his kingdom and free it from frogapocalypse. The story throughout the game is efficiently told but still proves surprisingly emotive, the depiction of its anthropomorphic adventures effortlessly bringing to mind fond memories of Brian Jacques fabulous children’s book series, Redwall. That’s not to say that Tails of Iron is family friendly however, far from it. The unforgiving combat is regularly punctuated by frogs, bugs and moles being eviscerated by the razer sharp tip of Redgi’s blade.It is the combat that proved the most surprising component of Tails of Iron, as I was certainly not expecting such addictively difficult encounters. This is the gameplay element that evokes the soulslike comparison.Call of Duty
