There is an undo function that allows the player to undo moves all the way back to the beginning of a puzzle. There is also a retry function. There are no sound or graphics options. There is a constant arcade style background music that becomes a bit wearing after a while, it would be nice to be able to shut it off. As there are not much in the way of sound effects, turning the volume all the way down manually will do the job. The puzzle levels in Space Ducks seem to have one correct way to solve them, although a few appear to present alternative ways to complete the level. Once a level is completed successfully, there doesn’t seem to be a way to revisit the level to try an alternative. Many of the initial levels look deceptively simple, but the rules for Space Ducks are such that that the player will easily end up on a block that gets pushed off into space or crushed when a gap causes blocks to slam together. There is also the possibility of getting swept off into space if two group of blocks slam together. To move the same block again, the duck must be walked off of that block and back on. However, the moved block must end up attached to something or it will float off into space with the player on it. This leads to many dead-end situations. In some cases, one or two undo’s may be all that is needed, but other times, the very first block moved was the problem. Most of the levels appear to have been made where a very precise move sequence is required to complete the puzzle. As such, Space Ducks is a very static (or linear) puzzler, like many block pushers. The price is reasonable and it appears to be bug free, it’s also a very small install. Space ducks is recommended for die-hard block pusher lovers. The controls and sound effect are so frustrating, it took me a few seconds to understand where I can walk and where I can’t­. When you can’t walk somewhere, there’s this really grating sound effect that I couldn’t endure playing so frigging loud. It was such a pain. I don’t understand why you have to use the 4 directional keys when just left-right would have been enough. It just feels weird.The gameplay doesn’t make much sense with the whole gravity in it, it doesn’t seems consistent at all, making some moves more like guesses than anything else. I definitely didn’t enjoy my time with it.

I don’t think I’ll try it another day. Space Ducks is a beautiful puzzle game with a short length and a pretty fair difficulty. Rather than being a grueling task that might make the player turn away like in so many other Sokoban games, this one helps the player along and makes a good entry point for this style. Despite how quickly the game can be played, it’s very clear the developers wanted to have a distinct visual style, and I think it really increased the experience for me since it was very comforting. The audio design for the game also works well with the puzzle mechanics, which is always a pleasure to have intermingled. I also wish to mention that I played the game after the update was delivered; for my own playthrough, I found the movement to be rather crisp and satisfactory so it should be fine now for those who were bothered by slow ducks (now they’ll waddle quickly to their grave with a smile). The actual puzzle elements are pretty neat, they essentially work like traditional box pushing except you have a gravity element in place as well as the ability to utilize it yourself and walk on the sides of objects. This becomes the main mechanic, though over time the game introduces at least 2 major new mechanics that are pretty interesting.New Tales from the Borderlands

The neat part of these puzzles is that none of them are super difficult, but each still manages to teach you a unique lesson. Another interesting aspect is that the puzzle titles actually provide some insight into what your goal should be, subtle hints like this I will always be a sucker for. Overall, I’m someone who would normally shy away from a game with a Sokoban tag, but this one actually grabbed my interest and held them all the way to the end. If you’re looking for a puzzle game on the easy side that’s completable in about an hour, then this is definitely worth picking up. Each puzzle has been excellently designed for a particular solution, it’s obvious that a lot of time and effort has gone into crafting them. The game often had me smiling at the little jokes and some of the scenarios my ducks were being put into. Expect to let a couple die stranded on a planet somewhere for the good of the crew! The music and theming helps to carry the theme across, but the focus is on gameplay – don’t expect talking ducks telling you a story. Having said that the ducks do quack I found some of the puzzles much more challenging than others and each one is based around a different concept. The level names provide a clue to the solution. Expect 1-2 hours of gameplay.

Some of the earlier reviews are complaining about bugs but it looks like these have been fixed – I found the experience very smooth Navigating unstable cubic planetoids where the ground often shifts under your weight felt novel in the Sokoban space, and exploration yielded some pleasantly surprising discoveries about how things interact. The mechanisms and rules were unfamiliar enough that it was sometimes hard to plan ahead, but the undo feature encouraged probing experimentation, and the puzzles were small enough that I wasn’t overwhelmed by the number of possible approaches. If the game only had puzzles with one character, I might have called it too simple, but it was particularly rewarding to work out a valid path for the later puzzles in which you swap control between three different ducks. This often involved using one duck to safely launch another into a different area, or strategically sacrificing one duck to give another a better position. These nuances made the design feel more clever as I progressed. The game did end somewhat abruptly after what was apparently the final puzzle, and I was left with a nagging feeling that it could have been further developed into something larger-scale, but in its current state I still think it was a fun ride.

Note that I played this after an update that increased animation speed, so I didn’t have any particular problems with the pacing. My playthrough took around an hour. I gotta be honest, Space Ducks: The great escape was a slow burn for me. Still it’s a very interesting puzzle game altogether, and seeing how the different mechanics interacted and evolved was a lot of fun. It also has an “AH HA!” moment where something happens and it all kinda clicks into place, you’ll know it when you see it and after that the game becomes even more enjoyable. Movement is a bit slow, but thankfully you can speed it up by pressing the directional keys twice. Overall a fun experience. Slightly interesting sokoban-style puzzle game about movement causing the ground to shift beneath your feet. Not much more to it that that, even with the complications of additional ducks and using blocks to traverse gaps. The only good thing about the aesthetic is the background as well; the ducks, pixel blocks, and annoyingly-long animations do the game no favors. There’s much better games to play in this genre and you should play those first. Only suitable for the truly voracious sokoban devotee, not because it’s difficult, but because it is at most a one trick pony with a pretty boring trick.
