As someone who loves grand strategy and do not normally play roguelite games, the thing that hooked me with Shadowveil was the depth of the systems, and the focus on high level strategy and decision making over micromanagement. Focusing on how to long term build up and develop your units over multiple runs, choosing the quests to pursue, the paths to take during expeditions and where to spend the resources you gather for me nail the high level strategy part of games that I really enjoy. It does however start out a bit slow, and it takes a few hours before the game really starts coming alive when you unlock multiple classes and start developing your characters and units. Wrapping that in an interesting setting with cool characters, narrative and a sense of narrative progression between the expeditions make this a really engaging and a unique blend of genres I’ve never seen before in a game. For a game about maximising your advantages, it sure is difficult to check info on things. Dr. Kawashima’s Brain Training Switch NSP

You can’t look at your inventory when choosing upgrades. Who needs the extra ability slot? No idea. Can’t remember. Which character will benefit from this attack speed buff the most? Not telling. The tutorial encourages you to look at enemy statistics to plan your strategy around, only almost all useful information is hidden anyway. Seems pointless unless it’s some sort of meta-upgrade down the line. Don’t know. Battle tiles require mousing over and a slight pause before they’ll tell you what they do, and sometimes even that won’t work, requiring moving away and mousing back over again. You can’t see your party’s abilities while selecting them to embark, the very first thing you do. There’s no defaulting the game speed, you’ll have to set it to faster every time if that’s what you’re wanting.

It’s all just very jank and irritating for what should really be smooth, simple and fast given it’s things like this you’re doing constantly. L5R was a long time staple game for me, and it really sucked when I walked away from the game after it’s acquisition and re-imagining of the CCG. Fast forward years later, and Palindrome reveals this game, and its story, and I immediately start feeling all nostalgic about my time in the game. I had the opportunity to play the game through a closed beta build as well as the demo before sinking my teeth into the full release of the game, and I wasn’t disappointed. I’ve always been a fan of RPGs and more recently, roguelikes. Having the story based around the time when I first got into the L5R CCG really made this games experience that much more enjoyable. Now I understand that auto-battlers might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but the amount of thought and management you still do with the remaining setup pre-run and during the run are still fun to do. Overall this game is highly recommended from me, not just for the nostalgia, but it’s an easy to pick up one at a very reasonable price, and will give you plenty of enjoyment from the character management to run management, and of course, seeing O-Ushi crushing ribcages with her indiscriminate dai-tsuchi.
