Missions split into two paths, with one focusing on series headliner Nobunaga Oda and one on vassal turned rival Mitsuhide Akechi. Opportunities to play as one of the other 37 characters pop up from time to time, but most levels require spending time as the main heroes on the first playthrough. This decision makes Samurai Warriors 5’s first handful of hours some of its most boring, since bouncing between characters and their various methods of attacking is the real joy of a game like this. Granted, it’s easy to replay missions with any unlocked warrior via Free Mode, but immediately replaying the same mission with a staff instead of a sword is monotonous, so I found that it is usually more interesting to keep going with the next stage and hope for some options on the character select screen. As I got further into both sides of the campaign, the mixture of cutscenes and animated visual novel segments drew me in. The refreshed character designs go a long way to distinguishing all the important players, especially for someone who hasn’t spent thousands of hours with the previous games. In addition, the ink and paint-inspired art style gives everything a distinct flair. No one is going to confuse this with Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, but Samurai Warriors 5 gives the series a standout visual style that impresses throughout.

Once you get through the initial chapters and unlock a group of characters, some of Samurai Warriors 5’s true appeal begins to shine through. Playing through a level while wielding a drum that produces energy blasts or an origami dove that freezes foes is what I come to Omega Force games for, and there are plenty of wacky weapons hidden just beneath the surface. It sadly never gets as crazy as Warriors Orochi or Warriors All-Stars, but there’s plenty of over-the-top action here if you want it. Whether you’re wielding a sword or bladed nunchaku, making hundreds of soldiers fly through the air over and over again remains a fun time in small doses. The returning Hyper Attacks ensure that characters never have to leave the action for too long, as their repeated strikes can drag a crowd of enemies forward with you. This both adds to the unintentional humor inherent to Samurai Warriors 5’s hack-and-slash gameplay and keeps combos from expiring as you run between larger groups of foes. you can mix and match a set of four Ultimate Skills on each character. These are weapon-specific and provide both stat boosts and flashy super moves on a generously short cooldown. On lower difficulties, the attack boosts and musou gage refills can make levels even easier than expected, but the extra moves do keep fights interesting. It also lets you save the truly flashy finishing musou attacks for boss battles, which just feels right. Some of the ways that Omega Force promotes these new moves can slow down combat. For instance, there are now groups of opponents with glowing spears or shields that laugh in the face of head-on normal attacks. They only fall to Ultimate Skill attacks – or you can simply walk around them and hit them in the back, in most cases. It’s a small annoyance, though, because these walls of shield-wielding goons can break up a good flow, and that’s a mood killer when you just want to go out there and mindlessly hack and slash through giant crowds. Outside of Story Mode and the ability to replay missions with any characters you like, the only other way to play Samurai Warriors 5 is the Citadel Mode. This is a smaller-scale defense mode that has your chosen warrior running around the battlefield stopping waves of enemies alongside either an AI or co-op partner.

Dynamic Combat.

Pairing certain characters often can lead to support conversations a-la Fire Emblem, and the missions also earn you resources that you can invest in various upgrade trees that feed right back into the story. Considering how linked the upgrade systems are, it’s confusing as to why the Citadel missions couldn’t have just been on a map alongside all the Story content. I really wanted to invest time here in order to get the most out of my character’s abilities, especially when I was playing on Hard. The missions themselves aren’t anything to write home about, but the prospect of squeezing out extra rounds with more unique characters like the powerful spear-wielding Shingen Takeda or drummer boy Hanbei Takenaka was too much to pass up. Koei Tecmo’s Samurai Warriors finally returns after a seven year hiatus with a soft reboot that takes the long-running saga back to its roots, focusing on a brash young Nobunaga Oda’s unwavering determination to unify Japan whilst zeroing in on his relationship with Mitsuhide Akechi. Makes a bunch of smart additions to the franchise’s standard hack and slash action and, perhaps most importantly for Switch fans, manages all of this whilst delivering impressively solid performance on Nintendo’s console. Starting off with that new art style; the rather bland, po-faced visual direction of older entries in the Samurai Warriors series has now been replaced with a fresh and colourful look that’s been heavily inspired by traditional Japanese ink paintings. From the moment you boot this one up it’s a real feast for the eyeballs and even on Switch, where the graphics have absolutely been pared back in comparison to other versions of the game, things still look really slick. In battle there’s a surprising amount of vibrant and flashy particle effects on screen as you slice and dice your way through the thousands of enemies that stand in your way; the narrative cutscenes that book-end missions now look uniformly superb. Yes the draw-distance still stinks a little – a problem not unique to this Switch port – but overall this is one tasty looking addition to the franchise. The reworked presentation really does feed into how enjoyable the narrative is too, with those stylish cutscenes presenting the various characters, plot points, perspectives and incidents in a way that just feels more captivating than it has done in the past. Yes, as long-time fans we were sucked in more than usual just checking out all the new character designs.

But even for newcomers this is a campaign with a story that’s brought to life in a rather gorgeous and, perhaps most importantly, easy to follow manner. Some hardcore fans may well take issue with a storyline that doesn’t seem quite as expansive in terms of its historical timeline as previous offerings in the series – as they may also do with the fact this new game has cut the character roster down from its predecessor’s fifty five to thirty seven. For us, though, it’s all in keeping with a reboot that’s looking to freshen things up, excising a lot of the bloat – in terms of both long-winded narrative and various fiddly combat mechanics – in favour of a game that generally feels lighter on its feet, is easy to get to grips with and doesn’t hold you back from getting blasted right into the thick of its hack and slash combat. In fact, if you’ve ever fancied trying a Musou game but have yet to take the plunge, this really does feel like a newcomer-friendly place to dive into the action. With this in mind, getting started here there’s even a surprisingly restrained tutorial period that sees you gently introduced to the game’s mechanics while limiting your choice of characters to just Nobunaga Oda himself. It’s a well paced opening and an informative introduction to how the series’ trademark combat works that takes its time and slowly layers on new elements, ideas and mechanics before then opening up the roster and letting you get down to the action proper.

Of course that action is the beating heart of the entire endeavour, and with regards to the changes and additions that Koei Tecmo has made to the standard Musou template, Samurai Warriors 5 feels like a real winner. This is still very much a traditional Musou game, and you’ll still spend the vast majority of your time hacking through impossibly large hordes of – let’s face it – braindead enemies, but what has been added elevates the entire experience over what’s come before in this samurai spin-off series. On top of the usual strings of light and heavy combos, hyper attacks and powerful Musou attacks that you can dish out as you blaze a path of destruction across the game’s various battlefields, Samurai Warriors 5 adds excellent new cooldown-based “Ultimate Skills” that can be deployed as and when you see fit. These new skills give the general flow of combat here a real lift, adding so much more in the way of choice and spectacle in how you go about savaging your enemies. The Warriors series is absolutely gigantic. For the past twenty years, developer Omega Force has been pumping out hack and slash action games across various histories and mythologies. While the bulk of the franchise’s entries are based around historical fantasy, there have been many notable spinoffs crossing well-known franchises such as Zelda, Persona, Gundam, One Piece, and Dragon Quest.

With each new entry, Omega Force improves in their endless pursuit of capturing a “One Versus One Thousand” feeling. While many of the games could be written off as mindless mashy action games, each new title has increasingly dipped into action RPG features. With Samurai Warriors 5, we’re finally there. Samurai Warriors 5 is the latest installment in the Samurai Warriors branch of Warriors games, and it serves as a soft reboot for the series. Omega Force has used this reboot to refresh and enhance as much as possible while still keeping that Warriors soul. A new art style, fresh mechanics, new progression options, and a fully fledged 25-30 hour story campaign are a few breaths of life the developer has given to the series. There is a grand cast of nearly forty playable characters, including many fan favorites sporting striking redesigns and mechanical overhauls. As this title is a soft reboot of the series, it centers around the infamous Oda Nobunaga as he becomes “The Demon King.” As with all Samurai Warriors games, this entry focuses on The Warring States period of Japan. This period was a time of endless war and strife between military leaders, feudal warlords, and clans of warriors. While I’ve played many games focusing on this time period, I’ve not played one that portrayed The Demon King in a sympathetic light. WARRIORS ALL-STARS
