It’s loads of fun and has the feel of playing a mage down. It’s also far more polished than I expected for an EA release. You have access to 3 mages. Fire is unlocked off the bat and you can unlock Frost and Arcane later down the road (I had enough gold left over from playing the test to get Arcane unlocked). Lightning is also there but marked for a later release. Each mage has a set of skills, some of which are locked and require gold to unlock. There’s a test dummy right next to the skill selection for you to figure out which mix of abilities works best for you. There are also permanent unlocks for you to work towards that do things like boost base spell damage, crit rate, number of dashes, etc. The combat is chaotic and fun. It starts out slow and really amps up. You’ll pick your map and difficulty get dropped in to find a mess of enemies that will just keep coming. The do a good job at hunting you down and they have decent aim too. If you expect to run in a straight line or camp out somewhere, you’ll be dead before you know it. Keep moving.

As you kill you’ll gain XP. When you level you’ll be able to pick a card which will augment your play somehow. You can unlock the ability to reroll the cards as well. By far my favorite card sets it so all future cards are picked for you at random. It really adds some spice to a run. There’s also powerups that spawn throughout the map. Some much easier to get to than others. Enemies can, if you select the right card, drop HP potions, etc. After killing x number of enemies you’ll spawn a boss crystal which when clicked, summons the maps big baddie. Stray Path

The boss fights have some unique mechanics to deal with that give it that bullet hell feeling, plus normal enemies spawning in. If you die you’ll sacrifice a chunk of your earned gold but fear not, you have a chance to go back in the stage and recover it… but if you die before getting over to it, it’s gone for good. It does need some work on optimization. It’s running hotter on my card (2080 Super) than stuff like Space Marine 2 or FF XVI. tl;dr – Amazing find. Great little roguelike that’ll give you hours of fun. Plenty of options to customize your mage to fit your playstyle. Neat looking animations, enemies, and spell effects. It’s a huge bang for your buck. Can’t wait to see what they do with it…
