Project Wingman isn’t really that, and it’s not trying to be. It’s more like a modern Top Gun game, sticking you in the cockpit of a jet as a superhuman mercenary ace for some pulpy, cinematic dogfighting action. There’s lots of detail and variety in terms of different aircraft and loadouts, but it’s definitely not a simulation in the sense of the games I grew up with, like IL-2 Sturmovik. The controls are very arcadey, even without Novice Mode enabled. It’s possible to land on about 100 feet of runway by coming to almost a complete stop mid-air and then barely kissing the ground with your wheels at the last second. G-forces are not a thing, as making hairpin turns in any direction while travelling hundreds of miles an hour won’t bother you or your aircraft. Flying upside-down or sideways at top speed and maintaining a constant altitude, more or less indefinitely, is just fine. You can stall if your speed drops too low, but even that is pretty forgiving and easy to recover from. And accuracy is relative, since even small ground targets like tanks will take full damage as long as you land your high explosive rounds somewhere in their general vicinity. That’s not to say that Project Wingman isn’t a lot of fun. Sometimes you just want to come in hot on a bandit and take them out with a well-placed burst of full auto, or swoop down over a geothermal power plant to carpet it in bombs before switching to the external camera to enjoy the Hollywood pyrotechnics. You want that radio voice in your ear yelling, “They’re on my six!” It’s just ambience. It doesn’t really matter who’s yelling, or what is on their six, or where “six” is. I’m just vibing. If you’re in the mood to fly jets really fast and blow shit up without having to worry about silly nonsense like structural integrity and blacking out, Project Wingman has you covered—as long as you have a controller or a flight stick. The mouse and keyboard controls, no matter how much I tweaked them, are just way too touchy and I can’t recommend trying to fly that way. I definitely had the best experience with my trusty Logitech Extreme 3D Pro stick, but the controls on a plain old Xbox 360 controller work just fine, too. Throttle management can be kind of a pain since you have to hold down the shoulder buttons to throttle up and down at a set rate, but it’s definitely playable.

Everything looks incredible, too, from the inside of the cockpit to the environments and volumetric clouds. I was able to cruise at 60-plus fps at max settings on my RTX 2060 Super, even with a lot going on. Every over-the-top explosion is satisfyingly bombastic, with flames and smoldering debris confirming your kill alongside a nice, bassy “boom!” that you can almost feel with surround sound headphones. Moisture will collect on the canopy and catch sunlight realistically. The terrain looks gorgeous whether you’re flying over freezing taiga or a futuristic metropolis. And the aircraft themselves have been thoughtfully crafted, with full attention paid to the tiniest details. I believe I was a combat pilot in a past life. Unfortunately, because it was a past life, I also believe I wasn’t a very good combat pilot. However, I’m still drawn to combat flight sims despite the fact that I’m terrible at them. In fact, I can quote all kinds of statistics about turn ratios, missile capacity, and so on… but I also tend to crash into mountains. What this means is that I prefer a more relaxed flight model in my sims, and I also love being able to fire an impossible number of missiles while whooping loudly and performing Immelmann turns. This one takes place in an alternate reality where an apocalyptic something-or-other releases a resource known as Cordium, which is… good for some reason? Nation-states are formed and folks battle for control of the supply, or something, and the plucky Cascadian Republic has enlisted the player’s mercenary group to help them. Look, it’s all a bit convoluted, but the gist is that the player is the babyface, the Federation are the heels, and the player gets to blow up lots of stuff in some swank alternate-present aircraft while dodging missiles and flak at over 1000 MPH. Flying the aircraft in Project Wingman is a dream come true. The sense of speed is intoxicating, and small details like clouds leaving moisture droplets on the canopy never fail to impress. Aircraft and ground details are simply stunning except when I auger in, as flames around an impact site are obvious 2D sprites against the 3D world. Smoke contrails fill the sky as missiles chase my plane, and enemy forces explode in an extremely satisfying manner. I can only imagine how amazing this must be in VR. The flight model is accessible to newcomers, with easily-recoverable stalls that will make even novice pilots feel like an ace. Difficulty is customizable, and planes are able to carry an impossible number of standard missiles, but pilots must ration advanced missiles and air-to-ground weaponry.

Realists may balk, but these piles of ammo allow missions to be much longer with more frequent dogfights, which is really why we’re all here. The game wears its Ace Combat inspiration proudly on its sleeve and feels like an homage rather than a direct competitor, although both games share the same space. The controls get the job done. I appreciated being able to configure my T Flight HOTAS X without difficulty, making use of the stick twist function to serve as a rudder, and the attached throttle to provide that extra sense of immersion. I was also able to quickly reconfigure button layout to provide me with the easiest access to my weapons and the ever-so-important flares used to assist with missile evasion. The stick could have been a bit more responsive (especially when attempting tight maneuvers) but I’m not sure if that’s a setting I didn’t fix, the relaxed flight model, or my aircraft’s overall speed. The throttle also felt a bit loose, but at the end of the day the controls felt fine and I had a great time wasting enemies while juking away from counterattacks. Lots of games follow formulas. Give a player a first-person camera view and a gun, and they know they’re playing a first-person shooter. Add on some random loot generation and an inventory screen, and you’ve got a looter shooter. Throw in a skill tree and an open-world and you’ve got an MMO. Project Wingman follows the formula written by Bandai Namco’s Ace Combat franchise for the past 25 years. Again, that’s not a bad thing. Developer Sector D2 is completely aware that their audience is filled with Ace Combat fans and catering to those fans would provide them with plenty of eager customers, as evident by Project Wingman’s successful release on Steam and Humble. Sector D2 is completely unashamed of the fact they’ve made what is essentially an indie Ace Combat game. In fact, there are so many references to previous Ace Combat games in Project Wingman that I could spend this entire article discussing them without ever actually talking about anything else. The comparison between Project Wingman and Ace Combat is simply unavoidable, so I’m not even going to try. But when making that comparison it’s important to remember that Ace Combat is made by an entire studio backed by Bandai Namco. Project Wingman was mostly made by three dudes working from home.

Consequently, there are parts of Project Wingman that are simply not as good as Ace Combat 7, but so much of Project Wingman is just as good–if not better–that I consider it nothing short of a triumph for this very niche genre. Let’s talk about the Ace Combat formula. Project Wingman calls itself a “flight action game,” but notice there’s no mention of the word “simulation” anywhere. That’s because Project Wingman–like Ace Combat–is about as far removed from reality as you can get. Project Wingman takes place in an alternate reality 400 years in the future where the Earth has suffered a volcanic apocalypse. In the future, there are lasers and railguns, but for some reason, all these warring nation-states have air forces composed of aircraft that are antiques today, let alone 400 years from now. Those antique planes are not actually referred to by their real-world names, but that’s probably so Sector D2 can avoid getting sued. You play as Monarch, a mercenary pilot fighting for the state of Cascadia, which has recently been invaded by an antagonistic Federation. Each mission completed earns you money that can be spent purchasing new aircraft, and each plane comes with its own unique stats like speed and handling.

As well as a selection of special weapons that can be added to every aircraft’s standard armament of guns and missiles. Project Wingman is a combat flight action game with an emphasis on polished and refined gameplay, true-to-its-roots inspirations, and an engaging single player experience. Perfect for those who aren’t looking for a simulator experience, with the ease of pick up and play, all the way to those who want a fast-paced challenging flight action game. Dogfight, strike, and fly through combat zones based off an alternate history of Earth. Either over the cold waters of the Bering Strait, attacking tanks in the brutal environments of Yellowstone magma fields, or diving through the Redwoods to strike targets of opportunity in the Pacific Northwest, across the oceans, above the scarred lands of the world, this war will take you from exotic battlefield to exotic battlefield, all while going up against odds way above your pay grade.
