PJ Masks: Heroes of the Night captures their heroic exploits as they stop Romeo, Luna Girl, and Night Ninja’s dastardly plots. So, the story isn’t going to win an Oscar for originality, but it matters not. My kids loved exploring the familiar locations while tackling the well-known villains. Each level is easy to overcome thanks to the simple objectives and repetitive structure. This deja vu approach was painful to watch, yet my kids adored the rigidity and basic gameplay. PJ Masks: Heroes of the Night stays faithful to many much-loved adventuring mechanics. You must explore, collect items, and overcome bosses while using your special powers and teamwork. The developers have cleverly incorporated each of these elements while maintaining a simplistic approach. Every task has a clear UI associated with it, and verbal commands guide you throughout. Sadly, however, as an observer, this made the action tedious and mind-numbing! But my kids loved the user-friendly style and the lack of parental guidance.

The gameplay reminded me of the Paw Patrol franchise, as the similarities are uncanny. In this, you must collect two hundred gems and three hero symbols. In PP it’s pup treats and dog tags. Subsequently, there were smiles all around, as each playable character was used equally on every stage. Disappointingly, though, every key task was either automated or restricted to one-button mini-games. Now, I know Petoon Studios is focused on a child-friendly approach, but this was perhaps a step too far. An option to adjust the gameplay would have been welcomed, especially for older siblings. Furthermore, there was a fun inclusion of vehicular levels. These character-specific rides broke up the standard side-scrolling approach and added some much-needed variety. Gamers are screaming out for ultra-realistic or movie quality graphics. Unfortunately, PJ Masks: Heroes of the Night is nowhere near that level, yet it looks good, regardless. Fortunately, however, the developers attempted to counteract this with minor theme changes, but the lack of complexity was alarmingly obvious on every stage. Unfortunately, ‘Groundhog Day’ didn’t stop at the graphics. No, the audio was pretty repetitive as well! The characters keep repeating the same instructions about collecting gems or climbing walls. It was infuriating to listen to, yet my kids loved the encouragement and gentle reminders. Anyway, Catboy has his cat-car, which travels fast. The Gekko -Mobile can swim, keeping Gekko dry underwater. And Owlette has the Owl Glider, you guessed it, it allows her to fly.On each level in the game, all three PJ’s are playable. They swap in and out as the levels are being played, usually when one of their superpowers are needed to progress. There isn’t any fighting in the game, just a skirmish at the end of the level between the good guys and the baddies. But even then, all your little one has to do is press a button to correspond with the prompts on the screen. Since PJ Masks is primarily a child’s game, the game does have a lot of hand-holding; various button prompts pop up on the screen. There is also an abundance of patting on the back going on in the game, meaning that nearly every time a move is completed successfully or a collectable is found, you’re told: “Well done”. While it is grating for an adult to read it continuously, the whole point of the game is that it’s a child’s video game. The hand-holding, prompts and praise is all encouragement for the child that is playing the game.

A game whose cast of three friends encourage one other and work together; sometimes they mess up or fail, but they keep trying! Even though PJ Masks is aimed at pre-school age children, I had a lot of fun playing the game. Not sure what that says about my mentality, but I found my inner child and enjoyed the game until the closing credits. The game’s controls are very responsive, and a pre-schooler should not have any difficulties controlling the PJ’s. All the characters are fully voiced, any child will love to hear their favourite PJ speak, whereas I found it more fitting to turn the volume control off on my Switch. But then, I’m not a pre-schooler and it’s been a long long time since I was. Is your child is a fan of the animated TV series and are you looking for a first video game to introduce them to gaming? Then PJ Masks: Heroes of the Night would be one I would recommend. I have seven grandchildren and one of them is a keen watcher of PJ’s Masks TV series, he would be delighted to be able to play the game. With its mix of platforming, driving, and the PJ’s superpower youngsters will have heaps of fun and save the day, or as the PJ’s themselves say “PJ Masks all shout hooray, cause in the night, we saved the day”!

The vehicle sequences feature one of the character vehicles and both acceleration and turning corners is done automatically. Players can change lanes to avoid obstacles and collect gems. This sequence plays similar to the vehicle segments of the recent Paw Patrol games, however some of these sections can be difficult when vertical placement of the gems changes height.Even I found it difficult to place the vehicle to collect the gems, and if you miss some you have to repeat the entire level to be able to go back and collect them. My 4-year old daughter really struggled on these sections and often handed the controller back to me, losing interest in the game.

I found if I did the driving sections for her, she could then enjoy the platforming sections which were suitable for her skills with the controller. Scattered within each level are coloured PJ Masks icons to collect too. Finally, the boss fights involved pressing particular buttons when prompted. If players can collect all of the gems and PJ Masks icons in a level, they will unlock a trophy that represents that level. These trophies can be browsed in the PJ Masks HQ before choosing the next mission. Mums and Dads may need to/want to get in and help to 100% each level to collect all golden statues.Overall, PJ Masks: Heroes of the Night is a great video game adaptation of the TV show allowing you play out some new adventures as these characters.
