Here, various characters investigate a series of Japanese mysteries that are scattered throughout Honjo (the royal ward of Sumida, Tokyo). All this with the aim of being able to carry out a resurrection rite that will allow them to bring whoever they want back to life. However, this will gradually turn into a kind of macabre challenge in which evil spirits will be involved. A kind of battle royale that mixes Mirai Nikki and Death Notein a unique and quite different narrative from what we usually see in titles of this style. As a visual novel, Paranormasight ‘s script continually strives to break the fourth wall with all kinds of quips . As soon as we start playing, an eccentric narrator will welcome us, introducing us to the game’s main story and its characters. Throughout the plot, we will have to embody several of them in a chapter structure. Sometimes, to advance in the story of a character we will have to have completed certain chapters of a different one. All this to give rise to a global story that we can only understand once we have addressed the different points of view that are presented to us. What would you do if you were given the option to bring someone back from the dead? Someone you loved, someone you admired, or someone who you felt deserved a little more time on this Earth? Say there were no strings attached, no Monkey’s Paw bamboozlery — they’d just be back like nothing had even happened to them in the first place. You’d do it, right? What about if there were sacrifices required, like the exchange of one life for another’s? Makes the situation trickier, huh? I know I’d tip out hearing that.

The game has a dark and eerie atmosphere that adds to the overall sense of mystery and intrigue. The visuals and sound effects create a sense of tension and suspense throughout the game.

The announcement of Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries Of Honjo from developer Square Enix was unexpected. Although they’re no strangers to the adventure genre, with the release of The Centennial Case: A Shijima Story in 2022, it amazes me that they would put effort into something so niche. However, here I am, neck-deep in a murder mystery where death lurks around every decision made. Still, I must say this is a genuinely dark and brilliant narrative experience that will keep you guessing until the credits roll. Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo caught my eye upon its unveiling at the last Nintendo Direct livestream in Japan. I was worried for a moment that it would only launch there, though thankfully it was announced as a worldwide release shortly after. A new horror mystery-adventure game developed by Xeen Inc. and published by Square Enix… sign me up. RPG fans might recognize Xeen Inc. as the development studio behind the delightful 3D remake of Trials of Mana. Call of Duty

Admittedly, Paranormasight is a tricky game to talk about and is best experienced knowing as little as possible. If you’re the slightest bit interested in an occult thriller set in 80s Japan, I highly recommend Paranormasight. Close this review now and play it as soon as you get the chance. If you want to know more, it’s almost impossible to talk about Paranormasight earnestly without spoiling what happens in the prologue. It’s roughly the first hour of the game, but it establishes many core pillars of its premise and structure – which may be, once again, best experienced without knowing the specifics beforehand. I’m glad I experienced it without any prior knowledge, so consider that going forward. I really enjoyed my time with Paranormasight and will try my best to keep spoilers to a minimum beyond the prologue. With all that said, this is your last spoiler warning. While the cursor sometimes feels a little clunky on Switch (I’ve never been a fan of moving a cursor with a joystick), Paranormasight includes one feature that often gets overlooked in Switch games – touch screen controls. You can tap, scroll, zoom, and more, all with a flick of your fingertip across the screen.

The game has multiple endings, and the player can make different choices throughout the game to experience each one.

Team that with the flawless Switch performance and the sheer joy of playing this game in bed or on the sofa as though you’re tucking into a good book, and I actually feel this game is most enjoyable on the Switch in handheld mode. I’m sure the PC version works just as well with a keyboard and mouse, but the portability is a massive draw with this one. I’d relay the core of the narrative, but telling you the story in a visual novel is as much a sin as telling you how to solve every puzzle in a puzzle game. Instead, I’ll lay down the groundwork. But, before we dive in, I want to highlight that the game deals with some very dark topics, including suicide, abuse, violence, and bloodshed, so please keep that in mind before playing and heed the mature content warning on the store page. The core story of Paranormasight revolves around a series of urban legends known as the Seven Mysteries of Honjo, each of which is tied to a curse. One fateful night during the late 20th century, the Feast of Shadows descends upon the Sumida Ward of Tokyo, Japan, temporarily boosting the spiritual energy of the area, and triggering the Seven Mysteries of Honjo’s ‘curse echoes’ to turn a handful of people into ‘curse bearers’. At first glance, what most attracts the attention of Paranormasight is its visual section , which is mainly carried out by Gen Kobayashi . This artist is known for having also designed the characters for The World Ends With You series, another popular Square Enix role-playing game that you will surely know. The soundtrack comes from Hidenori Iwasaki , who shines more than ever with a work that knows how to provide a great atmosphere.to the set. The game does not have dubbing, however, it allows us to change the volume of the game’s voices from the menu. This has its plot reason, and it is that as we mentioned before, the game uses all kinds of tricks to break the fourth wall and pleasantly surprise us. A couple of things about the title that have caught our attention are the lack of localization in Spanish (something strange in Square Enix productions) and the compatibility with the touch screen. As the game will also be released on computers and mobiles, we can choose to control it with a cursor as well as use our finger to perform different actions.

The gameplay of the title will be based mainly on choosing where to go, exploring our environment at a 360 degree angle and interacting with objects and characters to talk to them. This, in a way, brings much more dynamism and intrigue to the adventure than traditional visual novels do, getting closer to what games of the genre like Professor Layton orAce Attorney , to name a couple. It’s these questions and a whole lot more Square Enix asks players in its new horror visual novel, Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo. A sort of cross between Ace Attorney and Root Letter with a massive amount of macabre thrown into the mix, Paranormasight is an occult thriller for the ages — one that die-hard horror fans will enjoy piecing together while absolute cowards (like me) will rejoice in finding that golden unicorn of playable scary games. Featuring interesting characters with interconnecting plotlines that culminate in multiple different endings, Paranormasight will have players investigating all the things that go bump in the night for a long, long time.
