Within the confines of its map you can take in parched deserts and lush vineyards, upmarket seaside promenades and snowy mountain passes. It provides a welcome change of pace after the urban sprawl of Most Wanted, though I came to really miss those concrete labyrinths when I was outrunning the cops. But it’s ultimately a tradeoff, with Redview’s long, winding roads setting the stage for some truly operatic chases that go on for miles. They’re better suited for drifting and pushing fast cars to their limits, like Hot Pursuit, instead of outfoxing the cops and hiding like in Most Wanted. It’s all about the ballet of the chase. It’s a shame there wasn’t room in this world for both play styles, as it would’ve given us more variety to play with. And very occasionally, I did find myself being spotted by the cops even though I’d seemingly given them the slip, which was slightly frustrating. Each stretch of road is crammed with various challenges, including standard races and time trials, new cars to shut down, and records to smash. But for all of its gorgeous scenery, I found Redview a slightly less fun and secret-filled place to explore.

And while it may not be the most densely populated of landscapes, there’s always something to catch the eye. Grab a Ferrari 458 Italia and hit up Need for Speed: Rivals’ Redview County and you can find yourself in a pretty decent approximation of what a contemporary, open-world OutRun would look like. You’ll see traces of AM2’s magic in the languid powerslides that send sweet white smoke pluming from wheel arches, and in the long drives that take you through sinewy roads darkened by the thick canopy of pines, on to snaking snowy mountain passes, and climaxing in full-throated blasts through wide, parched desert. Dial back some of Rivals’ obnoxious background chatter and soundtrack and you’ll feel it in the base thrill of pounding open roads, and see it in far-off horizons that can be reached in several quick seconds with a heavy foot and a boost of nitrous. A drive around Redview County sees the speedometer rarely dipping below the 150mph mark, and the game delivers a sense of speed to back up its convictions. It’s a sensation that was brilliantly felt in Criterion’s Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit in 2010, but one lacking a little in its 2012 follow-up Most Wanted.

High stakes rivalry.

Rivals feels like a continuation of those titles, which is no surprise – the bulk of the staff at new studio Ghost Games was transplanted from the Guildford studio earlier this year, and the weight of handling, feel of vehicle combat and technical achievements will be familiar to fans of the Burnout developer’s brand of racing. It’s a continuation, but also a balancing act: the open world of Most Wanted was an automotive playground stuffed full of treats, but there was a sense of claustrophobia creeping in to the confines of the urban backdrop. Rivals keeps the open world, but it restores the wide, long highways of Hot Pursuit and weaves them in to a space that’s vast, cohesive and full of countless little distractions. The big new innovation is ALLDRIVE – a feature which EA calls ‘mingleplayer’. That basically means that at one moment, you can be playing the game’s campaign mode, on your own; then the next, you can join up with your friends online and race – all without having to connect to a server and wait. Sadly, there’s no split-screen multiplayer mode for racing a friend when they come round your house – though you can use the Overwatch iPad app to help or hinder one of your mates.You can choose to be a racer or a cop (and switch regularly) and then earn points for completing objectives. However, you have to ‘bank’ these points regularly by returning to your hideout or command centre – failure to do so means that if you’re busted or wreck your car, you lose them. As a cop, you win points by busting racers, responding quickly to alerts, and driving without crashing. As a racer, it’s all about beating other drivers, dodging the police and staying close to your car’s top speed. The graphics are what set this game apart – the gameplay is in 1080p quality as standard, and the way the lights reflect off rain drops and how windows shatter after an impact is very impressive. This is still an arcade game, though, and we were disappointed that there are only two camera views – a bonnet cam, and behind the car. We’d like to have seen a cockpit view, which would add to the realism.

There are ways to personalise your car as a racer, too. You can change the colour of the bodywork and wheels, or add decals, wraps and custom numberplates. This makes it a lot easier for your car to stand out from other racers in the online environment, but police cars don’t have the same level of customisation. You’re only allowed to pick between the standard car, an undercover model (with fewer decals) or an enforcer version (with bull bars). Once again, we should stress that Need for Speed is an arcade game, so if you’re looking for super-realistic cars with precise handling, this isn’t the game for you. The cars tend to be drift happy, and have an interesting traction control set-up that seems to kill power but still lets you skid. However, there’s a real difference between models, too – the Vanquish was keen to understeer, while the Cayman beautifully balanced. The steering is consistent, and the way the handling changes according to different surfaces (wet roads, dirt tracks) and your car’s state (like after your tyres have been spiked) is fairly impressive. The huge, open-world environment, wide variety of cars, superb graphics, life-like weather and damage effects make Need for Speed: Rivals incredibly fun – we could happily play this game for hours at a time. However, the lack of split-screen multiplayer and a cockpit view seem like missed opportunities, and those who prefer more linear gameplay should look elsewhere. The story is intentionally incidental. (We’re a long way from the narrative pretensions of the woeful NFS: The Run.) Whether cop or racer, each chapter is structured around a speed list, which is little more than a series of objects. Rivals is eager to get you behind the wheel and onto the tarmac, giving a welcomed sense of urgency, and one of the best things about it is the ease with which you can switch between playing as a cop or a racer. Rivals is tremendous fun, for a while, but once I got to grips with its weapons, unlocked more of its ridiculous cars, and became intimately acquainted with the map, it didn’t have a lot more to really show me. The map is fairly big but when you’re driving at such high speeds, it’s easy to see a big chunk of it in a single pursuit. It definitely continued to excite me, but stopped surprising me quite early on. No matter which side of the law you choose, there’s a garage full of high-powered super cars ranging from Aston Martins to Ferraris waiting for you. Handling is fun, responsive, and accessible – even newcomers will soon be able to slide around tight corners with a little practice. There’s also the option to soup them up, with high-tech gadgetry including spike strips and mines, shockwave blasts, and knuckle-whitening turbo boosts.
